We wanted shooting if we didn't get the win today after they went down to 10, nice to see my apathetic fatigue paid dividends

Oof, 12 point deduction recommended for Everton, not a nice week for them
Presumably this will also mean that Man City end up relegated to about 8th tier real soon!! The system works!!
― hiroyoshi tins in (Sgt. Biscuits), Wednesday, 25 October 2023 13:58 (eleven months ago) link
wow, never thought that deduction was gonna arrive
― no gap tree for old men (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 25 October 2023 14:05 (eleven months ago) link
whats going to happen with the man city point deduction?
― Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Wednesday, 25 October 2023 14:13 (eleven months ago) link
Idk it's been ages, feels like with them if they act in a decisive timely way City's lawyers can pull it apart over an uncrossed T, if they take ages to put the case together they can drag it out and run the clock down
The smaller clubs whose cheating is more amateurish just get brutalised
― hiroyoshi tins in (Sgt. Biscuits), Wednesday, 25 October 2023 14:17 (eleven months ago) link
there will never be a man city punishment because pep gaurdiola simply would never be involved with a club with questionable moral practices and every time another allegation comes out he confirms this so case closed

I have been trained to hate the toffees from birth, and hope for their relegation every year, but if they get a points deduction and man city don't (or chelsea for that matter) then I am going to be livid. so getting ready to be livid I guess.
― the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 25 October 2023 16:04 (eleven months ago) link
The difference between City and Everton is that City will have assembled the finest legal team possible whereas Everton use a bloke called Kenny whose business card starts with “Had a fall at work?” and ends with “also for wedding DJ bookings contact funtimekenny345@lycosdotcom”.— BN (@BanditNanna) October 25, 2023
― no gap tree for old men (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 25 October 2023 16:08 (eleven months ago) link
important question, when they list the official table, do they work in the deduction during the season or only reflect it at end?
cos it'd be wild to see the table with Everton with negative five points
― real warm grandpa (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 25 October 2023 16:56 (eleven months ago) link
it's been a fairly regular occurance for teams in lower leagues to start with negative points, it would just be the first time at this level. but by the time it's confirmed, they would presumably have more than 12 points anyway.
― the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 25 October 2023 17:07 (eleven months ago) link
that's a pretty bold assumption with this year's club!
― real warm grandpa (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 25 October 2023 17:08 (eleven months ago) link
It’s a good week for my eldest to “get into football”. Watching the derby in a Cumbrian pub with a load of Reds to kick things off. Walking along Egremont prom on a Wirral visit this week I did wonder how LFC fans in New Brighton might feel about seeing the Everton stadium every day across the river. Another nail in the UNESCO world heritage coffin.

I would assume a story like this has more to do with a potential Manchester punishment than the Everton billionaire's lack of lawyers
https://theathletic.com/4375454/2023/04/06/saudi-newcastle-boris-government/
"The British government considered the possible failure of the Saudi takeover of Newcastle United to be an “immediate risk” to the United Kingdom’s relationship with the Gulf nation, an investigation by The Athletic can reveal.
Then-prime minister Boris Johnson’s chief strategic advisor even sought to find a “senior interlocutor to impress the interests” of the government onto the Premier League."

99% cash grab, 99% really really really strange
tbf milo the Premier League is more than capable of supporting amoral cash grabs and defending its wealthiest members without government interference

In other sporting integrity news, after a £60 million move and 12 appearances for Newcastle, Sandro Tonali's been banned for 10 months for gambling stuff by the Italian FA, which I'm p sure applies worldwide
Nicolo Zaniolo, who is only on loan at Villa froM Galatasaray, has maintained his innocence re: actually betting on football matches
― hiroyoshi tins in (Sgt. Biscuits), Thursday, 26 October 2023 11:34 (eleven months ago) link
tbh must admit my ignorance wrt how gambling addiction manifests itself because my first thoughts are generally 'mate you can bet on literally anything in the world of sport except football so why not just do that'
― oscar bravo, Thursday, 26 October 2023 19:27 (eleven months ago) link
Seems weird to me that you can have professional soccer gamblers as owners but player betting with no evidence of malfeasance is a big deal.
― papal hotwife (milo z), Friday, 27 October 2023 03:10 (eleven months ago) link
Yeah. And also why these players, who earn tens or hundreds of thousands each and every week, feel the need to bet in the first place xpBut I guess that's the addiction part

Xp There is a certain amount of stuff about betting through illegal, unlicensed channels that people outside of Italy probably don't understand or particularly care about; AFAIK the bigger issue within football is that Tonali has admitted to betting on his own team's matches (albeit purportedly ones he wasn't involved in)
The amount of gambling advertising everywhere is fucking gross though
The Premier League is voluntarily stopping gambling shirt sponsors from next season (didn't stop Villa squeezing in one more for the road); the "SkyBet championship" ad hoardings are just covered in all this faux-benevolent "join us to gamble responsibly!" shit
― hiroyoshi tins in (Sgt. Biscuits), Friday, 27 October 2023 08:41 (eleven months ago) link
yeah it's not individual players it's professional football itself that has a serious gambling problem
― no gap tree for old men (Noodle Vague), Friday, 27 October 2023 08:52 (eleven months ago) link
Had not realised until I flicked through Danny Dorling's latest book that the UK is now the world's largest regulated online gambling market - bigger even than the US. Another grand achievement for new Labour.
― Piedie Gimbel, Friday, 27 October 2023 13:19 (eleven months ago) link
The US is coming hard for the title though. There's only one sports broadcast (Apple TV baseball) you can watch that's not wall to wall gambling/gambling-lite ("daily fantasy!") ads and promos. California, Texas and Florida holding out on actual sports books is the only thing holding us back from that #1 spot.
