and not just on a physical level now, but UPenn, the cancellation of Viet Nguyen's book talk in NY this weekend; I can see this support starting to have impacts on people's professional lives, which is absurd. Obv if you are like that Davis professor and calling for the murder of journalists and their children you should have some repurcusion. But taking a principaled political stance should not result in cancellation.

well if nguyen didn’t preface his comments about the gaza siege with a condemnation of hamas then we have to assume he’s in favour of chopping babies’ heads off. i don’t make the rules
― Tracer Hand, Sunday, 22 October 2023 15:56 (two years ago)
this article lays out a pretty plausible worst case scenario. my impression is that israel is planning on the first step already - ground invasion of gaza - so that’s funhttps://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/oct/22/the-week-the-world-tried-to-stop-gaza-spinning-out-of-control
― Tracer Hand, Sunday, 22 October 2023 16:01 (two years ago)
yeah, israel have been very openly planning a ground invasion, but it won't go well for them. they are pretty much guaranteed to suffer heavy casualties (urban warfare is difficult and brutal and the idf are not at all prepared for it) even if they are at all successful in significantly damaging hamas' capabilities (which is probably the bare minimum they could claim as a victory) and hezbollah is threatening war if they do invade gaza. they also have no real plan for what to do in the aftermath of any invasion and have been desperately trying to figure out what they're even trying to accomplish. of course, backing down now would also be an incredible sign of weakness and fail to satisfy the desire for revenge - probably the best option for short-term de-escalation but still not any sort of resolution to the instability. the other option of maintaining the current siege & air strikes, without actually invading, until there's mass civilian deaths from starvations would still (you would hope) lead to more international backlash and likely trigger the threatened reprisals from hezbollah. they don't really seem to have any good options here.
hezbollah are already working towards proper war - the border skirmishes have been escalating and they seem to have been coming out on top there so far, successfully damaging israeli equipment while taking less casualties. there have been reports that some in the israeli government saw war there as inevitable and wanted to pre-emptively strike them but the americans had to talk them out of it because they're not convinced israel can win fighting two fronts at once.
idk really how this is going to avoid a greater regional war. hezbollah's threats turn out to all be nothing because they don't want to deal with the usa too? (that seems to be what the usa is hoping for?) israel finds some way to claim victory without really doing much more (maybe killing some senior hamas figure in an airstrike idk)? but that would still probably just be delaying further chaos even if it's the most peaceful short-term possibility
― ufo, Sunday, 22 October 2023 16:29 (two years ago)
idk really how this is going to avoid a greater regional war.
Especially if the result of a ground invasion of Gaza is all the other countries and non-state groups in the region watching them take heavy casualties and thinking, "Hmm, they're not so tough..."
― read-only (unperson), Sunday, 22 October 2023 16:37 (two years ago)
that is already what they are thinking, yeah
there's reports just now that some israeli forces just made an attempt at entering gaza to try to fix the fence but were forced to retreat

In terms of a wider war, do any of the state in the immediate region currently have capacity for that? Obviously not impossible but which state(s) are you thinking?
― anvil, Sunday, 22 October 2023 19:24 (two years ago)
Yes, I'm not convinced by this wider war theory.
― The First Time Ever I Saw Gervais (Tom D.), Sunday, 22 October 2023 19:26 (two years ago)
if nothing else, the existence of Israel's nuclear retaliation capacity seems like a deterrent to all out regional war. that doesn't mean it won't happen. initiating or greatly escalating a war is always a reckless move. that truism applies both to Hamas's recent incursion and hostage taking and to Israel's current actions and planned invasion of Gaza.

So there was a Solidarity with Israel event in the parking lot of a nearby grocery store and a Pro-Palestinian protest that was originally supposed to be held in downtown Chicago was rescheduled for the same location. Social media reports are all over the place and difficult to be held as valid, but there has been a non-stop parade of cop cars flying in that direction for the past hour or so.
Some X reports are of shots fired, but being blamed on both protest groups. Hopefully nothing major, but sounds like an ugly situation.

Interesting thread as we go to a potential ground war.
Missing context here: Sharon’s plan was to invade South Lebanon to force Palestinians in camps to flee back to Jordan, overthrow king and create Palestine there (that old chestnut). US Marines evacuated most PLO leaders and some of their families to stop this and left PFLP behind https://t.co/ckdxpLwDQC— تمار 🌴 Тама́р 🌴 תמר (@tamars) October 23, 2023

Update: I found the document Herzog is holding. It is not a chemical weapons manual, it's an amateurly-published biography of WTC bomber Ramzi Yousef. It contains no instructions, only mentions of Yousef's early plans to use chemicals. It isn't classified or secret, it's a PDF. https://t.co/vPUCCEaHDO pic.twitter.com/OhLDsYEfqE— Séamus Malekafzali (@Seamus_Malek) October 23, 2023

Not to derail the thread on a comparatively minor issue, but here's some follow-up reporting on the incident near my house yesterday. Just as an example of how far the hate has spread.

Two people were taken into police custody Sunday evening after one man allegedly fired a shot in the air near a group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators protesting an Israeli solidarity event in the northern suburbs and another man later maced the group, which included a Sun-Times reporter. No one was injured by the gunshot. Another protester was struck in a hit and run, police said, but was also not seriously injured.

In London I counted literally one counterprotestor, standing in front of the Silver Cross (pub), enflanked by three cops. Two other cops were stood a few feet away. The guy had a mask completely covering his face so we couldn't see it, and a St George's cross flag. He had written some things on the flag but the cops were standing so close to him that we couldn't read what he'd written. This of course led to the joke 'what do you call a racist surrounded by three cops' 'FOUR racists!' waheyyyy

NDP MPP Sarah Jama has faced condemnation (even from NDP leader Marit Stiles) for calling for a cease-fire, Doug “Shithead” Ford immediately jumped on this to demand her immediate termination, and today she has been terminated.
Her statement is here, via Twitter:
Thirteen days ago, I called for an immediate ceasefire and de-escalation by the Israeli government, which had begun a horrific siege on Palestinians in Gaza. Pretty insane how pleading for the fighting to stop (i.e. the bombings, the dying including children) is being met with this warped response. Even when factoring in the Israeli hostages - how bringing them home should be THE priority and how continuing this military campaign instead of negotiating is gambling with their safety - that doesn't seem to dissuade some histrionic accusations being thrown about.
