Apparently, Elon has never read either The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy or Stranger in a Strange Land.

no shade towards Hitchhiker's Guide but I fear that Elon would become even more annoying if he read it

Exclusive: Apple is pausing all advertising on X, formerly Twitterhttps://t.co/RV69yHZHIi— Ina Fried (@inafried) November 17, 2023
― frogbs, Friday, 17 November 2023 19:53 (one year ago)
I'd like to see someone actually say they will pull advertising completely and never return, rather than these 'pauses'
― I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Friday, 17 November 2023 19:57 (one year ago)
yeah was thinking the same

It’s a Humanitarian Pause
― Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Friday, 17 November 2023 20:13 (one year ago)
the benefit of pausing is that it gives apple the time to turn toward the camera, break the 4th the wall, and really level with the consumer before resuming
― i really like that!! (z_tbd), Friday, 17 November 2023 20:16 (one year ago)
I was thinking, sure, nice move, but remember when all those big companies "paused" shortly after Elon purchased it in the first place and they mostly came back and it made no difference at all?
― Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 17 November 2023 20:18 (one year ago)
eh i think ad revenue is still down significantly
― 龜, Friday, 17 November 2023 20:22 (one year ago)
yeah I thought it was a fact that their revenue was down like 70% since he bought it, plus I mean if you just hop on there now clearly the ads are uhhh quite a bit different now
I'm not really surprised they're using the word "paused", aren't people still sort of assuming he's going to sell at some point?
― frogbs, Friday, 17 November 2023 20:26 (one year ago)
Who needs IBM anyway when you're still attracting advertisers of this calibre to your site?

^^i definitely see more weird junk ads than anything these days, the big companies even if they haven't given it up totally certainly appear to have pulled back

I saw one righteous defense, which was basically "I was here before you, asshole," and another funny defense, basically "the only reason I am still here is so that I can benefit financially from the inevitable class action suit."
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 17 November 2023 20:57 (one year ago)
xp i dont think that's remotely true, I'm barely on there myself unless it's to follow an NBA or NFL game I can't watch. when I go on otherwise it really does feel about half as active as it used to be

My chrome extension still successfully keeps twitter cleaned up for me (and also keeps it called twitter). But the time has come to move on. My prob is actually the number of people I follow who *haven't* left yet. Reporters, writers, comedians. Or maybe they have and just moved somewhere other than Bluesky, but fuck scouring more than one of these sites at a time. That's like a distraction in search of a distraction. I think I'll just have to get back in the habit of getting the news *after* it happens rather than while it is happening.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 17 November 2023 21:38 (one year ago)
Oh yeah, I wasn't implying that they haven't taken a big revenue hit, just more that all those big names backing away didn't do anything prevent the site as a whole from being driven directly into the fascist ditch.
― Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 17 November 2023 21:38 (one year ago)
A friend posted the other day "How much longer do news organizations have to say 'X (formerly known as Twitter)." It's a good question, but I think the answer is, a good long while. X is such a stupidly generic name that if you just drop it into a news story people who are not actually engaged with social media probably still don't know what it means (while they have definitely heard of Twitter).

The thing about those ads is that no ad has ever influenced me to buy an IBM or Apple, but I've definitely impulse-purchased cool, dumb gadgets that have shown up in my social media feeds.
