the benefit of pausing is that it gives apple the time to turn toward the camera, break the 4th the wall, and really level with the consumer before resuming

I was thinking, sure, nice move, but remember when all those big companies "paused" shortly after Elon purchased it in the first place and they mostly came back and it made no difference at all?

^^i definitely see more weird junk ads than anything these days, the big companies even if they haven't given it up totally certainly appear to have pulled back

I saw one righteous defense, which was basically "I was here before you, asshole," and another funny defense, basically "the only reason I am still here is so that I can benefit financially from the inevitable class action suit."

xp i dont think that's remotely true, I'm barely on there myself unless it's to follow an NBA or NFL game I can't watch. when I go on otherwise it really does feel about half as active as it used to be

As someone constantly recovering from numerous self-inflicted cooking wounds, I very much like the look of that finger protector you're all being so disparaging about.

My chrome extension still successfully keeps twitter cleaned up for me (and also keeps it called twitter). But the time has come to move on. My prob is actually the number of people I follow who *haven't* left yet. Reporters, writers, comedians. Or maybe they have and just moved somewhere other than Bluesky, but fuck scouring more than one of these sites at a time. That's like a distraction in search of a distraction. I think I'll just have to get back in the habit of getting the news *after* it happens rather than while it is happening.

Oh yeah, I wasn't implying that they haven't taken a big revenue hit, just more that all those big names backing away didn't do anything prevent the site as a whole from being driven directly into the fascist ditch.

A friend posted the other day "How much longer do news organizations have to say 'X (formerly known as Twitter)." It's a good question, but I think the answer is, a good long while. X is such a stupidly generic name that if you just drop it into a news story people who are not actually engaged with social media probably still don't know what it means (while they have definitely heard of Twitter).

You can just say "the social media platform X"
