so icy down here in Eugene, haven't left the house since Saturday mid-day. not even the buses are running!

actually I did manage to take the pup for a short walk this afternoon, she seemed to enjoy it! but it is an ice rink, 20-minute walk and I almost fell twice

Power was out at the office, okay in the neighborhood. Picked up an electric heater on Saturday morning after one night of the wind getting thru the windows into the bedroom. Cats have mainly been indoors for the past 3 days and are complaining about it

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Tuesday, 16 January 2024 06:28 (five months ago) link

We lost power for three hours Saturday morning, got it back, then lost it again at 1:30pm as the thermometer was hitting 15F with 35 mph winds. We lived with wood-burning fireplace heat and a camp stove for the next 52 hours or so. Our living room eventually stabilized at 47F. We set a timer at one hour intervals all night to feed the fire, taking turns.

We got power back yesterday (Monday) at 5pm. Since then we've raised the house back up to 68F, got some sleep, and today we've been prepping like mad for the next outage from the coming ice storm. We still have lots of wood, but only about 65% of what we had going into this storm. We'll survive. We've lived through similar events multiple times. Just not much fun.

Car windows here (Southeast) iced over solid in about 15 minutes. Can't imagine what 12 hours of this will be like if the graupel continues. Have been lucky keeping heat and power this past weekend and mostly hunkering down, though the snow has been un-slippery the past two days and easy for walking.

My wife and I tried walking to the grocery store yesterday and she fell and injured her wrist. Ended up taking her to the ER and it was full of concussed folks who slipped on ice.

my girlfriend got her car stolen overnight, kudos to them i guess for putting in all the work to steal a car in this weather

Kate (rushomancy), Wednesday, 17 January 2024 05:37 (five months ago) link

Damn that sucks. Plenty of stuff shuttered in Multnomah and Clackamas Counties today.

finally slipped and fell while feeding the chickens, no harm done fortunately

It's been just unbelievably slick out there. At least it's not going back below freezing.

I have some 'trail' crampons with spikes about 1/2" long so I think I'll try getting out of the house for a short walk along mostly level grades. I'm getting a bit stir crazy, also sleep deprived. At least we are still with power, so there's no real threat to our health or safety while we wait for the slow thaw.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Wednesday, 17 January 2024 22:52 (five months ago) link

I'm getting serious cabin fever... still stuck at my GFs with her other GF and her roommate... still not safe to travel today. Hopefully tomorrow. Me, my GF, and her GF are all doing pretty badly in emotional health terms, and putting us all in an apartment together isn't exactly making for wacky comedy gold. Plus, the weather has meant that I haven't had access to, like, therapy. I guess the upside is that I've written 5,000 words of fiction in the past two days, simply for lack of anything else to do.

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 18 January 2024 05:18 (five months ago) link

Damn, that sucks. I hope you’re feeling better today.

Been mostly in the apartment for the past several days, was going to motor to the workplace today but with freezing rain going to possibly hit this afternoon, I’m holding off on that.

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Thursday, 18 January 2024 16:36 (five months ago) link

Today I'm thinking of moving to Minnesota. I hear the weather's nicer there.

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 18 January 2024 19:27 (five months ago) link

We lost power for another two hours from 4pm to 6pm. Temperature hovering between 31F and 32F with strongish winds and the neighborhood has hundreds of 125 ft tall firs and cedars getting top heavy with ice. I am not optimistic about making through the night without losing it again. Ah, me. Just hoping the roof stays intact and the cars uncrushed.

something big happened near my home around 4pm, heard what sounded like a truck overturning and then an explosion, followed by more sirens than i've heard in years. my power went off just as it happened and then came back on 5 minutes later. sirens ran for 15-20 minutes. i did not go investigate

Clay, Friday, 19 January 2024 04:04 (five months ago) link

Absolutely hellish. No more than blinks here, fortunately, and being back home helps a lot surprisingly.

Kate (rushomancy), Friday, 19 January 2024 14:56 (five months ago) link

my wife's ex-step-daughter is staying here now because in Springfield she was told it could be another week (!!) before she gets power

I’ve heard about this in a few places, power lines down or transformers blowing. Looks like we’ve still got big winds ahead today.

three weeks pass...

i don't really keep up with local news but i've had a couple of people mention portland nazis to me recently. and maybe i'm being oversensitive but there's usually a tone of disapproval, like, "what the fuck, you have _nazis_ there? and you're, like, ok with that?"

well of course i'm not fucking ok with it. i got at least two nazis in my (extremely gay) neighborhood. they could probably kill a lot of queer people if they got the mind to do so. like, what's the ask here?

Kate (rushomancy), Tuesday, 13 February 2024 18:05 (four months ago) link

why haven't you singlehandedly eradicated them?

never trust a big book and a simile (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 13 February 2024 18:06 (four months ago) link

i'm not saying it to be confrontational, it's a genuine question! i hate living around nazis and i just don't know what the hell i can do to help get rid of them.

Kate (rushomancy), Tuesday, 13 February 2024 18:56 (four months ago) link

Portland is weird because it didn’t sprawl like most American metros did, so white flight was only a difference of like 5 miles away or across the river into Washington State. You can bike it.

So the kicker here is that the suburban/exurban fashy supporter crowd is a lot close to the city types they all hate, rather than like an hour away as it plenty of other metros

This footage from 1917 of PDX is pretty neat:

huh the soundtrack is kinda neat... I googled it and it's this guy I never heard of but he seems to be the Steve Keene of classical royalty free soundtracks!

There's even a doc about him: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royalty_Free:_The_Music_of_Kevin_MacLeod

Anybody attending the OMSI SF filmfest? We saw “Edge of Tomorrow” yesterday, and damn if that ain’t a great film with some unfortunately dated shaky-cam footage

https://omsi.edu/exhibits/sci-fi-film-fest/

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Monday, 15 April 2024 05:43 (two months ago) link

That sounds pretty cool! IDK, I might see if I can do the Sunday showing of _Stalker_, I have a hard time watching anything by myself so I've never actually seen it.

Kate (rushomancy), Monday, 15 April 2024 13:04 (two months ago) link

Had no idea about this film fest at OMSI! I still have never seen Galaxy Quest, so maybe this Sunday would be the time to.

I finally found two guides to current arthouse listings, since so many venues do one-time screenings without there being comprehensive showtimes in one place.

There's this weekly newsletter with good recommendations

And then there's this guide as well.

I live walking distance from both Cinemagic and Clinton Street Theater, so I've been going to those regularly. Still haven't made it to the Academy. For first-run movies, I've loved the Moreland especially, with $5 Tuesdays, a big theater that's not too crowded, and great sound/picture (and that Milwaukie/Bybee neighborhood is fun, too).

My wife and I are coming through to Portland this weekend from Friday until Monday - we’re over from the UK for our first visit to the North West of the states. Any gigs or other fun things happening? Also we enjoy beer if anyone fancies meeting up.

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 15 April 2024 16:40 (two months ago) link

We could be up for seeing Stalker actually.

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 15 April 2024 16:45 (two months ago) link

for some reason i still haven't made it out to Clinton Street Theater, despite also living in walking distance, haha. I've been wanting to see RHPS there for ages (I've actually never seen it). I did go out and get tickets to Stalker at OMSI on Sunday - they're nearly sold out for that showing. If anybody else is going and wants to meet up, LMK, my email is my username at gmail.

Anyway reason I bumped this thread was that I was on my way back from my mammogram today and passed a Lutheran church that was advertising that they were doing Drag Church. Portland, people of all genders and/or no genders. Portland.

Kate (rushomancy), Tuesday, 16 April 2024 22:20 (two months ago) link

We haven’t got tickets yet, but are thinking about it, just want to check there isn’t anything else on that night over the next few days.

We might see Love Lies Bleeding which is not out yet in the UK, are either Living Room Theaters or Studio One Theaters good cinemas?

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 16 April 2024 23:43 (two months ago) link

Living Room tix are relatively expensive as far as movie theaters go, with the gimmick that you get food delivered

The other one I’ve not attended

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Wednesday, 17 April 2024 06:35 (two months ago) link

Also be sure to visit the Kennedy School while you’re here. It’s a fun walk-thru

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Wednesday, 17 April 2024 06:36 (two months ago) link

Chewshabadoo & co., if you're doing Stalker on Sunday (or even if not), I'd be around to meet up before or after. OMSI isn't too far from Hawthorne Asylum (a pod of 15 or so food trucks + beer), so that's an option.

paisley got boring (Eazy), Saturday, 20 April 2024 11:28 (two months ago) link

Hey, that sounds cool! I’ll send you a PM to exchange details

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 20 April 2024 18:48 (two months ago) link

Film is on at 6:45. So we think we’ll try and get to Hawthorne Asylum about 4 o’clock.

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 20 April 2024 21:47 (two months ago) link

Sounds good! I’ll be there around 4 — I sent an email to the Gmail in your message, but if you didn’t get it just let me know. (If you did get it, just search my name and you’ll see what I look like.) Hope other ILXPDX folks can make it as well if they’re around.
