guess that's why he's writing unreadable screeds about endorsing Dean Phillips

if ackman wasn’t worth a zillion dollars he’d be one of the many posters constantly making excuses about why they can’t be normal

i like neri oxman's art.

treeship., Wednesday, 17 January 2024 02:12 (one year ago)

on chapo they said she makes "yarn art for rich people" and i don't think that is true at all.

i understand there is a broader ideological battle here where oxman and her husband are on the wrong side. this is just sort of a separate point.

treeship., Wednesday, 17 January 2024 02:15 (one year ago)

agreed, her stuff has much more of a giant paper weight for rich people aesthetic

lag∞n, Wednesday, 17 January 2024 02:19 (one year ago)

like Chihuly and any number of others, Oxman and her fans have mistaken “design” and “decor” for “art.”

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Wednesday, 17 January 2024 12:28 (one year ago)

That isn’t a value judgment on decor and design— we need quality stuff in those realms too!

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Wednesday, 17 January 2024 12:30 (one year ago)

the vast chihuly hanging piece in the entrance hall to the V&A is tbf p striking (and of course the V&A is a museum of design and decor) but these days when you view it from the nearby balcony it is often also p strikingly *dusty*: evidently they are afraid of taking feather brooms to it too often in case it comes crashing down on the reception desk below

I’ve always loathed Chihuly for looking like stoner wax art gentrified for the world’s most boring liberals.

(i don’t think Chihuly or Oxman are good designers or decorators)

(•̪●) (carne asada), Wednesday, 17 January 2024 18:08 (one year ago)

My sense of Chihuly is that his work always impresses people, but this is due to it being colorful and obviously requiring plenty of technical skill to make. But being impressed by it should not be mistaken for enjoying it. I don't enjoy it.

I think his stuff is just ugly.

B. Amato (Boring, Maryland), Wednesday, 17 January 2024 19:26 (one year ago)

The only time I found any enjoyment in Chihuly's work was touring his exhibit by the Space Needle, where it was like enveloping yourself in the stoned alien landscape and less about a kind of ugly "focal" point in another context.

i am meh about chihuly’s work being art but i am more than cheered that aesthetic snobs hate it

a single gunshot and polite applause (Hunt3r), Thursday, 18 January 2024 01:32 (one year ago)

I am not a snob, despite some past pronouncements on this site. I like all kinds of stuff in most media forms.

What I don’t like is what artless rich people, tech yups, and corporations deem “inoffensive” art, or what I would call decoration. It’s offensively bland and bad.

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Thursday, 18 January 2024 03:29 (one year ago)

You’re a snob and that’s fine be proud of it

G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Thursday, 18 January 2024 03:46 (one year ago)

You’re a snob

As we are now dealing in labeling people, pray tell what would your label be?

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Thursday, 18 January 2024 03:50 (one year ago)

i tend to agree with u table i think it is v often bland, tho sometimes it is not quite that to me. part of me is pretty enraptured by elaborate or even like, baroque process, and i think there's so much implied, necessary process in some of his pieces. and i tend to find some art in some of that necessary process, if done well. even if it is not transgressive, challenging, or offensive. even if it seems to some like mere decoration. no accounting for my bad taste, for sure.

a single gunshot and polite applause (Hunt3r), Thursday, 18 January 2024 04:35 (one year ago)

The mask she designed for Bjork was kind of cool.

I find her self-importance far more objectionable than her art.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 18 January 2024 04:36 (one year ago)

Yeah, that's my feelings on like 99% of the art world.

Chyiv Kyiv (Fetchboy), Thursday, 18 January 2024 05:57 (one year ago)

Hunt3r, that makes sense— I can admire the process behind something while also thinking it is objectively not interesting qua art. Chihuly (and much glass craft) is a good example.

In the end, I don’t really think the problem is with what’s being made— it’s that at a certain point, “craft” became a naughty word and everyone started calling the mugs they made on the weekend or the elaborate pieces that Chihuly’s studio makes “Art,” when in the past it would be described as (and admired for its) craft.

My best friend is a professional ceramicist. They make functional things and art pieces, and while both are part of their practice, there’s a huge difference between them.

Oxman exists at the point where design, craft, and technology meet. I just don’t find it very interesting, provocative, or cool— it’s empty stuff from someone who has little sense of art, but a lot of aesthetic smarts.

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Thursday, 18 January 2024 12:53 (one year ago)

obviously the incentive to humor rich people plays a huge part in shaping the art world but the mit media lab seems like a particularly pure example of that, mit and rich people coming together to, in this case, produce art (small orbs), it sounds bad, and it is

Yeah Chihuly's stoner aesthetic is what I enjoyed about the one big exhibition of his I saw, where you could walk through immersive tunnels lined with it. (I actually did it stoned iirc.) Silly but kinda fun and unobjectionable imo.
