its not an original or unusual observation, the only difference is stancil is using it as part of his most annoying guy possible routine
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 6 February 2024 19:24 (one year ago)
and im sure hes totally wrong about how it functions tho i cant claim to be a deep stancilologist

What people see on Twitter is still made up of what people say on Twitter.
Which raises the question: if a tweet drops in the forest of promoted blue checks and ad inserts so that no one sees it, does it still make a sound?
― more difficult than I look (Aimless), Tuesday, 6 February 2024 19:57 (one year ago)
I am generally sympathetic to his political views, but I think he is largely motivated by a belief that posting is Important because it shapes the discourse ("proud member of Do Something Twitter"), which can lead him to act hysterical at times because he's convinced himself that what he's doing is very high stakes. I think I followed him for a time but stopped because I just found him kind of annoying -- and he would end up in my feed pretty regularly anyway.
― jaymc, Tuesday, 6 February 2024 19:59 (one year ago)
problem with Stancil's argument is the higher the ratio of Nazis/bots/crypto scammers Twitter has the less culturally relevant it'll be
― frogbs, Tuesday, 6 February 2024 20:03 (one year ago)
its pretty generous to say that stancil has political views, i would say he more has politics fever
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 6 February 2024 20:07 (one year ago)
online centrist pundits are funny whatre doing no ones ever going to invite you to davos whats the point of all this
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 6 February 2024 20:08 (one year ago)
its sad they missed the blogging to legitimacy pipeline, now whats left some sort of smoldering wasteland, a single voice crying over the horizon "chappo trap house needs to vote"
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 6 February 2024 20:13 (one year ago)
I'm not really on Twitter much anymore, so maybe he's changed, but I don't really consider Stancil a centrist. I think of him as a standard liberal wonk who's frequently frustrated with the Democratic Party -- but not because it's too far left but because it's sclerotic and out of touch with the modern information environment. (Brian Beutler is another guy in that lane.)
― jaymc, Tuesday, 6 February 2024 20:20 (one year ago)
for me personally its important not to develop an opinion on any of these people
― plax (ico), Tuesday, 6 February 2024 20:23 (one year ago)
WS is apparently relatively effective in his day job but is channeling hard GWB-era blogger vibes in a space that is 1. not a blog 2. exists in 2024, not 2004
it was kind of funny when people from his state were asking him wtf he was doing and he was replying with "I don't know who you are" to people who were like "we have talked in person and we have been to the same events"
― ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 6 February 2024 20:25 (one year ago)
eerie resonance between the old democrat obsession with the mythical swing voter and the online democrat obsession with the the legendary non voting socialist, canvasing windmills
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 6 February 2024 20:31 (one year ago)
Unfortunately when you're online you run into a lot of non-voting socialists
― Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Tuesday, 6 February 2024 20:34 (one year ago)
its not actually a lot, is the thing
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 6 February 2024 20:38 (one year ago)
they're just loud
― ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 6 February 2024 20:39 (one year ago)
are they even or are people just very interested in them, for whatever reasons.......
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 6 February 2024 20:40 (one year ago)
there are a lot of non voters in the country, are a lot of them high info socialists taking a stand, no
suspect that even most of the highly engaged in the is voting important argument people from the its not that important leftist side are in fact voters, and theyre mostly just reacting to very annoying dense people like will stancil
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 6 February 2024 20:44 (one year ago)
cause whatre you gonna do engage in a thoughtful debate on the merits of civil society with that fucking freak
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 6 February 2024 20:45 (one year ago)
there are a lot of non voters in the country but the non-voters who are online talking about politics tend to be socialists
― Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Tuesday, 6 February 2024 20:54 (one year ago)
And they are very concerned about vote shaming
― Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Tuesday, 6 February 2024 20:55 (one year ago)

I have an Insta friend who was rage posting on all of us that posted tributes to Wayne Kramer, but haven't been regularly posting on the situation is Gaza - which she does all the time
I wanted to make a comment about how performative and ineffective it is to just keep re-posting stuff over and over but I wisely stayed out of it
― Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 6 February 2024 21:04 (one year ago)
the non voting conversation is entirely a will stancil et al project, socialists arent going around telling each other not to vote, but they might say something like that to will stancil because hes annoying and has made them the object of his weird ineffectual obsession
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 6 February 2024 21:04 (one year ago)
I'm thinking about people on this message board too

there are people like stancil on here lol, maybe not quite as psychotic, but aligned with the same unmoored technocracy
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 6 February 2024 21:11 (one year ago)
idk the only socialists I've heard/seen telling people that they're not voting in the US presidential election (which is still a long ways off and who knows what they'll think by then) are people in states that would have solid democratic leads anyway
there have been some well-meaning if kind of token vote municipal/state socialist candidates where I think it's an interesting exercise to push the discourse if you're able to bring issues to debates and coverage of the race, but I don't know if that's been that effective, either. the local mayoral election (nonpartisan position, someone who is ostensibly a democrat will will) ended up having a socialist-type candidate who, if anything, was a spoiler for the more left-leaning of big two candidates
there was also some guy who wanted to be the less-interesting Vermin Supreme-type guy of the midwest who somehow got some votes but we don't need to care much about that
― ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 6 February 2024 22:03 (one year ago)

There are def. left wing people in PA who say they aren't voting for Biden at least
― Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Tuesday, 6 February 2024 22:13 (one year ago)
how many
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 6 February 2024 22:16 (one year ago)
feel like we talked about this endlessly in 2020 too and then he got the most votes in US history

One on ILX means how many in the entire state, though? PA is still swing-ish, isn't it?
― nickn, Tuesday, 6 February 2024 22:34 (one year ago)
the typical formula is 1 ilxor = 1 million citizens, its not looking good
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 6 February 2024 22:40 (one year ago)
Non-voter whining/panic runs parallel to the idea that criticizing Democrats online is basically voter suppression because the 100 people reading it on ILX or 38 followers on Twitter might swing the election.
― papal hotwife (milo z), Tuesday, 6 February 2024 22:48 (one year ago)
xp fuckin hell that means 204 million american citizens have voten to b4n l0u1s j@gger?

it was a mass movement
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 6 February 2024 22:55 (one year ago)
the thing that drives me crazy about the high info left non voter panic is there are actually tens of millions of non voters out there, and as a group they lean democrat, who are they why arent you interested in any of them besides the handful of over educated people who hate genocide
i think i know the answer fwiw
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 6 February 2024 22:56 (one year ago)
Very convincing case here against the existence of non-voting socialists on social media
