I will mute based on vibes alone, it’s often not even a negative judgment really, just “this isn’t the kind of thing I’m here to see”
― atmospheric river phoenix (morrisp), Tuesday, 6 February 2024 20:14 (seven months ago) link
its fine with me if people want to mute and block til the cows come home none of my business but a society (website) that has blocking as a core spiritual practice is doomed (because too many posts will be hidden)
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 6 February 2024 20:16 (seven months ago) link
muting is really the more socially conscious choice, save blocking for major cases
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 6 February 2024 20:17 (seven months ago) link
Wouldn't have thought that "blocking other accounts for any reason at any time is totally acceptable" was unique to "Bluesky culture."
― jaymc, Tuesday, February 6, 2024 2:04 PM (twenty-four minutes ago)
the culture on twitter was really weird about this! people would brag about getting someone to block them, obsess over who followed/unfollowed them, etc. And people with large accounts were paradoxically less likely to block than mute, because genuinely threatening people would take a block as their impetus to rally others to harass

I see none of this in eitehr bsky or twitter prob cos i dont engage with those kind of accounts at all, but honestly if anyone I do follow starts RTing realy loud whingey idpol tone police fuckers, I'll just mute/unfollow, meh.

excessive blocking by a significant % of users will eventually deteriorate the overall user experience
the whole idea is to deteriorate the overall user experience

I wasn’t aware that the Bluesky CEO was a crypto maven, so assume it’s already in a death spiral now.

I wish the desktop browser version would keep the back arrow glued to the top of the screen when you scroll through replies on a post. It's a small complaint because you can go back by hitting the home icon or your browser back button, but I still find myself scrolling back to the top of posts to do this and then getting annoyed.

he blocked me for being a reply guy so I can't read it (I like him, but have always found his social media presence a bit willfully obtuse...he said something quite a while ago that everyone misinterpreted, because IMO he was just not clear, and I said so, and got immediately blocked)

If ilx had a block feature and we used it the way these itchy block-fingered high profile guys do on x/blueski we'd quickly have no one reading our posts.

Not that you be should have to, but if the newsletter has a distinctive name or there's some other word they always use in the promo posts, you could try muting it. Not sure if Bluesky mute supports multiword phrases or not.

Brazil Bluesky has suddenly exploded, apparently due to a court order blocking Twitter in Brazil(?)I keep a “stan account” (sort of as a joke or diversion) that had absolutely zero going on, but was following a few dormant Brazilian fan accounts; and suddenly they sprung to life, along with a bunch of new ones, in a wave of follows and reposts. Pretty cool…

I’ve noticed I’ve blocked more people on Bluesky than I’ve blocked in the same time on other social media apps. Every week there’s some new fandom drama that brings the most unhinged takes to my timeline.
Last week was people responding to Ed Piskor’s suicide with posts like “all predators should delete themselves?” “Predators?” “Delete themselves?”
The last few weeks has made me reconsider the value of Google’s identity verification requirements for Google+. However, it’s certainly possible social media is, at the end of the day, bad.

In the final year or so that I was on Twitter, I took to using my actual photo as a pfp, and a close version of my real name – as a self-policing measure, to restrict the impulse to be unnecessarily rude, snarky, whatever. (I know that many ppl choose to be non-anonymous anyway, and many others can’t/won’t do it for safety reasons; but it “worked for me” in that respect.)

maybe the only reason civilization happened is that at some point physically you could “not be there” or could usually “walk away”? when the algorithm is feeding you terrible shit it’s hard to get away. also harder online: re-enacting that story of the Kung bushmen who surrounded a tribe member who was a relentless bad-actor and then filled him with arrows. and then had absolutely the entire community stab him for community participation. i read it an a relatively serious book didn’t check on its truth.and not that i could recommend it, mind, i def would not do.

Jack Dorsey claims Bluesky is 'repeating all the mistakes' he made at Twitter
