ever since the G. Amato character was introduced I've been waiting for something like this to happen

frogbs, Thursday, 15 February 2024 19:29 (six months ago) link

This season has been so good

They really excel at introducing new characters with vaguely unplaceable deals, & the soap opera of it all means they burn through comedic premises at an irresponsible rate, and still the core cast is maybe funnier than they’ve ever been: mark, larue, dekkar, joe (who deserves an Emmy or an Oscar whichever is greater). That bit last ep when gregg rinse-chewed the popcorn for ages before launching right into his review fucking murdered me, that’s the kind of T-1000 implacability you only get by being Neil hamburger

what I love about the cast is that they all seem to come from different backgrounds and skill levels. none of them are really comedic actors. some of them are just basically themselves...the Dekkar guys really are Italian musicians, Joe is just Joe, a lot of the bit characters for the Oscar specials come across like they don't know what's going on - I still don't think the Rat Pack guys really 'got' what OC was about, and I'm pretty sure some insider mentioned that the Tim/"James Dean" confrontation at the end of one was so intense because the James Dean actor thought the real Tim was actually yelling at him

the reason why this works so well is because On Cinema is, at its core, sort of a reality show. I mean we know it's scripted, but the movies are obviously real movies, most actors use their real names and are clearly playing versions of themselves, and the saga plays out across the episodes and various social media things, so it seems way more 'real' than say an episode of The Office. like the ending of this one really did make my jaw drop, which wouldn't happen in a regular comedy where everything is based around punchlines, nor would it in a drama series where you expect dramatic things to happen. but in the OC world it feels just real enough to give you some sort of emotional reaction.

I’ve often thought G. Amato was just an insane old man but now…

B. Amato (Boring, Maryland), Thursday, 15 February 2024 21:38 (six months ago) link

its amazing how little is known about Kaili despite her appearing in like 15 episodes now

frogbs, Thursday, 15 February 2024 21:46 (six months ago) link

Definitely tries to keep her distance from Tim and Gregg and the circus around them

gregg trying to bond with her over harry potter is so sad and also hilarious

gregg exchanging his unused extra ticket at the dollar theater really got me

not sure if I’ve seen anything since the Hei Network move. how lost am I likely to be if I go to the cinema for the Oscar special / Amatocon?

bae (sic), Friday, 16 February 2024 08:16 (six months ago) link

well an awful lot has happened but I bet you'd still enjoy it anyway

frogbs, Friday, 16 February 2024 14:58 (six months ago) link

I think even if you're not completely caught up on everything it's still fun to gawk at this insanely convoluted world they've established. That's more or less how I got into it.

Chris L, Friday, 16 February 2024 15:09 (six months ago) link

I watched most of the trial and the 5th special before really knowing anything about the series, it's still very funny even if you don't know what's going on

frogbs, Friday, 16 February 2024 15:28 (six months ago) link

most of the new characters are introduced without much context anyway - i don't think there are any super specific details you need to know to understand what's going on

c u (crüt), Friday, 16 February 2024 15:32 (six months ago) link

we may be getting some details on Joey fairly soon though

frogbs, Friday, 16 February 2024 15:41 (six months ago) link

It’s amazing how this thing has been kept going for 13 years, and always comes up with something new and unexpected. THIS is prestige TV.

B. Amato (Boring, Maryland), Friday, 16 February 2024 16:48 (six months ago) link

I'm still catching up, have just reached the 10th oscar special and couldn't contain my fistbump when Hank Friedman came back on screen to explain the planned expansion of his Tom's Original Chilli business to the minor league team the Rancho Cuacamonga Quakers

H.P, Sunday, 18 February 2024 14:15 (six months ago) link

oh hell yeah you can see Tim beginning to return to his true self.

I love this saga of Tim being "good" showing how terrible everyone around Tim really is. This special has killed all the romance I previously had in my gregghead-dom. I wanna see this buff stumped!

watching that live was a hell of a trip. cant remember how it went down exactly but I think people had 'discovered' the dashcam footage right as the special was starting which made the live chat go nuts

The “intel” that Toni was speaking to the DA was basically just made up by LaRue right? Lmao if his incompetence/laziness winds up getting people killed

frogbs, Saturday, 24 February 2024 20:59 (six months ago) link

So Tim hired Joey to whack Toni or what

Evan, Tuesday, 27 February 2024 12:43 (six months ago) link

I think just scare her?

B. Amato (Boring, Maryland), Tuesday, 27 February 2024 13:01 (six months ago) link

yeah I don't know if shots were supposed to be fired since it looks like Matt shot first. as bad as Tim is I can't imagine he would actually order a hit on someone.

my theory is Matt actually watches the show and probably suspected a goon was going to show up to intimidate them. I mean he starts firing pretty quick.

frogbs, Tuesday, 27 February 2024 14:13 (six months ago) link

I went back and watched most of the past episodes and didn't see where LaRue says anything about Toni to Tim? At the end of one of the episodes Tim asks him to look into if Toni is talking to the DA, but I didn't hear if LaRue says anything back.

Joey said he wasn't able to watch It Ends With Us because of an "additional workload" due to "certain people's actions" - though that could be Dekkar-related, or anything really

c u (crüt), Tuesday, 27 February 2024 15:12 (six months ago) link

where does Tim get the heads up that the case has been reopened? is that because of the commercials that Joe is doing? I recall it being brought up that the case might be getting reopened due to Toni's "cooperation" but don't remember the details

I thought that was related to Gregg spending the entire budget for Pep Boys: A Baboon Story on the mop from Mrs. doubtfire.

he got a great deal on that and also movie memorabilia appreciates in value 10% per year

yeah that makes sense, since Joe was doing those lawyer commercials he probably did have some inside info, also he's not technically wrong
