Around 2003 in Chile, when the original trilogy of Star Wars began airing on television there, they did this funny thing to avoid cutting to commercial breaks. They stitched the commercials into the films themselves. Here is one of them, with the English dub added in. pic.twitter.com/wC7N2vPNvv— Windy 🛸 (@heyitswindy) March 2, 2024

It's either fascist collaboration or not. Delete your account and disappear for good, don't minimise it.
You can join Bluesky without invitation. You can find me there. Staying on this Nazi-friendly platform is a form of collaboration and should be avoided or minimised.— Yair Wallach (@YairWallach) March 3, 2024

Personally, it's nothing like that.

lmao it’s ok to just like twitter, you don’t have to make up weird rules for people who don’t like twitter to follow.

I won't make up rules if he doesn't talk nonsense about people posting on there. And that account posts now and then BTW.
And we all know Bluesky is where people have gone. I can work that out thanks.

quite a lot of the reporting in that (and the mossberg book apparently) is going to strengthen agrawal's case.

there's a named recurring character who goes on the record, just an IC, who i worked with. the full story of what happened to him is kind of nuts on a personal level but not globally significant. he was a musk fan and was excited about the acquisition. spent a couple of months sucking up before being fired for leaking. he was not leaking. couple of other interesting (to me) ICs on the record talking about how they ~~feel~~. the story about musk personally dismantling servers over christmas in sacramento was new to me, but i think it's lifted from the mossberg book and seems like a pretty self-serving thing for musk sources to lie about so i don't really believe it.

the server relocation story has all of the classic bits: people not stopping rich guy from doing something that probably breaks a dozen facility rules and regulations because they can't tell him no, multiple laws involving data privacy being broken, safety just ignored, tweets about how other people were dumb to tell him it was a bad idea
and him admitting, mere weeks later, "we probably shouldn't have done that"
― ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 5 March 2024 21:52 (seven months ago) link
I assume a good portion of the servers were just toast by the time they made it up the coast, or needed so much reconfiguration that it was more of a time and money sink to do what he did than it would have been to do a planned transition

they've all got their own flavor but I think bluesky's hit the mass where it's more generalist. people aren't posting as much, but the whole list thing works pretty well. I've added one called "Quiet Posters" and it's just people I follow who post sporadically so I'm more likely to find out if they're posted a link to an article they've written, new project they've announced, w/e

Bluesky's OK. I need to find more people to follow, and I need to mute some of the people I'm currently following for going on days-long sprees, but the atmosphere is generally genial. Also, if you are trans, wow is Bluesky your spot.

I can't get into bluesky. It keeps randomly picking some random account and just showing me their stuff. Seems like more people are posting on threads. I'm def looking at threads more than anything but that's because preview posts keep showing up in instagram and I click on it like a sucker. Threads seems to have the most action, but it's also filled with really dumb people it seems. I don't mean like the toxic assholes on X, but like, people who seem, I don't know, not very smart. But also Michael Chabon posting all the time. I don't know why I mostly see him.
― dan selzer, Tuesday, 12 March 2024 15:08 (six months ago) link
I read Mastodon and am far more chatty there, but that's mostly from how things fell out from the Twitter diaspora - the academics, nerds, and work-related accounts went there. Xwitter I still keep around for some lists I built up, plus the authors and institutions I follow that keep the Facebook/Instagram/Twitter social media triad and there's no way I'm going to FB or IG. Bluesky feels very nostalgia driven, but that's prob just who I follow.
I think much of the differences between Mastodon, Bluesky, Threads, as a Twitter replaced come down to how you used Twitter to begin with and what you wanted out of it.
― Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 13 March 2024 11:05 (six months ago) link
lol dan, I am having a very similar Threads experience, where every time I go over there I encounter a long screed from someone I don’t know that is impressively dumb
I am mostly on Bluesky at this point. I haven’t looked at Mastadon in months. I’m following Tom’s People’s Pop polls on Twitter but once those wrap up, I’m not sure what would induce me to actively post there.
― Cemetry Gaetz (DJP), Wednesday, 13 March 2024 12:20 (six months ago) link
I can't log in to Twitter on any device now (just get unspecified errors) and only through still being logged in to it via Chrome on my phone can I access (and I only do so to vote in those pop polls). So the decision made for me to an extent.
― nashwan, Wednesday, 13 March 2024 12:29 (six months ago) link
huh, nashwan exactly my deal at xwitter— i hardly go there anyway, but access, except by my phone, is impossible. i def don’t care enough to troubleshoot it
― ... 2024-- there's one clear winner! (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 13 March 2024 13:29 (six months ago) link
add it to the list of bugs that have popped up since musk fired everyone, prob the worst one you want users to be able to go on your site its the whole point
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 13 March 2024 13:34 (six months ago) link
Threads defaults to "for you," you have to toggle it back to "following" every time you visit.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 13 March 2024 13:37 (six months ago) link
Will do.
I quit X months ago and do not regret that one bit, except when somebody posts something interesting and says look at this thread on X and I don't understand how and why anybody still posts there at all.

once you futz enough with the feed settings you kinda realize the genius of bluesky. the way you can have multiple feeds each one customizable is actually really cool, but the default feed they start you out on is terrible. i recommend going Only Posts. i like algorithmic feeds like For You on twitter but the algorithm has been going facebook style crazy on me lately, i liked a tweet with a pic of Jeanine Garofalo on the Larry sanders show from some “Actresses of the Nineties” account and now my feed is like 30% sexy celeb pics
