I almost posted that too!

Getting a pop-up every time I block a shitty scam ad might be enough to get me to sign up for Bluesky

papal hotwife (milo z), Tuesday, 12 March 2024 03:06 (one year ago)

And we all know Bluesky is where people have gone. I can work that out thanks.

Serious question - have people yet consolidated to something yet, or is any one service particularly better than the others? I'm about ready to give up Twitter but don't know if I should do Bluesky, Threads, Mastadon, or what-have-you, it feels very disjointed right now

Nhex, Tuesday, 12 March 2024 14:05 (one year ago)

they've all got their own flavor but I think bluesky's hit the mass where it's more generalist. people aren't posting as much, but the whole list thing works pretty well. I've added one called "Quiet Posters" and it's just people I follow who post sporadically so I'm more likely to find out if they're posted a link to an article they've written, new project they've announced, w/e

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 12 March 2024 14:08 (one year ago)

ya im on bluesky i like it, doesnt have nearly the lunacy of twitter but maybe thats a good thing, havent tried the others

lag∞n, Tuesday, 12 March 2024 14:20 (one year ago)

Bluesky's OK. I need to find more people to follow, and I need to mute some of the people I'm currently following for going on days-long sprees, but the atmosphere is generally genial. Also, if you are trans, wow is Bluesky your spot.

Tahuti Watches L&O:SVU Reruns Without His Ape (unperson), Tuesday, 12 March 2024 14:57 (one year ago)

I can't get into bluesky. It keeps randomly picking some random account and just showing me their stuff. Seems like more people are posting on threads. I'm def looking at threads more than anything but that's because preview posts keep showing up in instagram and I click on it like a sucker. Threads seems to have the most action, but it's also filled with really dumb people it seems. I don't mean like the toxic assholes on X, but like, people who seem, I don't know, not very smart. But also Michael Chabon posting all the time. I don't know why I mostly see him.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 12 March 2024 15:08 (one year ago)

I read Mastodon and am far more chatty there, but that's mostly from how things fell out from the Twitter diaspora - the academics, nerds, and work-related accounts went there. Xwitter I still keep around for some lists I built up, plus the authors and institutions I follow that keep the Facebook/Instagram/Twitter social media triad and there's no way I'm going to FB or IG. Bluesky feels very nostalgia driven, but that's prob just who I follow.

I think much of the differences between Mastodon, Bluesky, Threads, as a Twitter replaced come down to how you used Twitter to begin with and what you wanted out of it.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 13 March 2024 11:05 (one year ago)

lol dan, I am having a very similar Threads experience, where every time I go over there I encounter a long screed from someone I don’t know that is impressively dumb

I am mostly on Bluesky at this point. I haven’t looked at Mastadon in months. I’m following Tom’s People’s Pop polls on Twitter but once those wrap up, I’m not sure what would induce me to actively post there.

Cemetry Gaetz (DJP), Wednesday, 13 March 2024 12:20 (one year ago)

I can't log in to Twitter on any device now (just get unspecified errors) and only through still being logged in to it via Chrome on my phone can I access (and I only do so to vote in those pop polls). So the decision made for me to an extent.

nashwan, Wednesday, 13 March 2024 12:29 (one year ago)

huh, nashwan exactly my deal at xwitter— i hardly go there anyway, but access, except by my phone, is impossible. i def don’t care enough to troubleshoot it

add it to the list of bugs that have popped up since musk fired everyone, prob the worst one you want users to be able to go on your site its the whole point

lol dan, I am having a very similar Threads experience, where every time I go over there I encounter a long screed from someone I don’t know that is impressively dumb

Threads defaults to "for you," you have to toggle it back to "following" every time you visit.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 13 March 2024 13:37 (one year ago)

Will do.

I quit X months ago and do not regret that one bit, except when somebody posts something interesting and says look at this thread on X and I don't understand how and why anybody still posts there at all.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 13 March 2024 13:43 (one year ago)

i def don’t care enough to troubleshoot it

yeah true although I've decided it was a personal but slightly botched shadowban by Musk directly, makes us both feel like a big man

once you futz enough with the feed settings you kinda realize the genius of bluesky. the way you can have multiple feeds each one customizable is actually really cool, but the default feed they start you out on is terrible. i recommend going Only Posts. i like algorithmic feeds like For You on twitter but the algorithm has been going facebook style crazy on me lately, i liked a tweet with a pic of Jeanine Garofalo on the Larry sanders show from some “Actresses of the Nineties” account and now my feed is like 30% sexy celeb pics

flopson, Sunday, 17 March 2024 16:25 (one year ago)

I just left X/Twitter - no way that fascist gets any more attention from me. Political violence / misogyny / xenophobia has no place in modern society. I just don't get how we let this nutjob get so many federal contracts. Elmo can choke on whatever drug he's mainlining.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 17 March 2024 18:19 (one year ago)

The economics of groceries is what frustrates me.

If I want a BLT, I must buy a whole loaf of bread, a pack of bacon, and a tomato, hoping my mayo hasn't expired.

I want a proportionally-priced "kit" to make 1-2 sandwiches, as I end up throwing out so many leftover ingredients

— Cliff (@bubu4ubu) March 18, 2024

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 19 March 2024 21:47 (one year ago)

why can't he freeze the bread and bacon?

jaymc, Tuesday, 19 March 2024 22:56 (one year ago)

in the replies he genuinely seems to be complaining that he can't buy half a tomato

Bernard Quidbins (NickB), Tuesday, 19 March 2024 23:31 (one year ago)

We need to set up a market where people can trade tomato halves online

President Keyes, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:15 (one year ago)

Funny how there isn’t something that starts with an L that also goes into a BLT, that seems weird

epistantophus, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:16 (one year ago)

it stands for lmayonnaise

lag∞n, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:18 (one year ago)

Seriously though, this person must be a) bad at shopping, b) bad at preparing their own food, and c) TERRIBLE at planning. If you just want a BLT, buy a damn BLT

epistantophus, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:21 (one year ago)

i might eat a blt

lag∞n, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:22 (one year ago)

damn if only there were other meals that could use *checks notes* bread, bacon, tomato or mayo in part or in combination with other things

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:22 (one year ago)

1-2 blts

lag∞n, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:23 (one year ago)

Or buy that whole loaf of bread and ~reap the benefits~ of extra bread!

epistantophus, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:23 (one year ago)

I’m bad at meal planning in general but add some sliced deli meat? Different sandwich. Egg? French toast with your bacon. Mayo? Get you a spoon and eat it

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:24 (one year ago)

Yeah now I could go for a BLT too, and I already ate, FML

epistantophus, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:24 (one year ago)

lifehack: dedicated mayo storage shed

lag∞n, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:25 (one year ago)

expired mayo? whoever even heard of that anyway

epistantophus, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:25 (one year ago)

now I’m all amped up and I want to go to the store to buy a leaf of lettuce, a slice of tomato, two slices of bread, two pieces of bacon and a pocketful of mayo

epistantophus, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:27 (one year ago)

If I can’t do that then why are there even stores

epistantophus, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:28 (one year ago)

just bring all the stuff to the cashier and ask them to make you a sandwich

lag∞n, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:30 (one year ago)

the thing is, a full tomato is just a vessel to keep those couple perfect slices fresh. the rest can be compost

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:32 (one year ago)

i usually just eat the rest of the tomato on the side as a lil salad if you will

lag∞n, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:33 (one year ago)

That’s true, ime the rest gets diced up and thrown into whatever I’m cooking. Gotta get to that next fresh tomato!

epistantophus, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:34 (one year ago)

old fridge tomoato, no thank you

lag∞n, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:36 (one year ago)

It seems obvious that this person's food preparation skills top out at "I can make a sandwich" and they only use this skill at rare intervals because almost all their meals are either cold cereal, take-out, or microwaved. Why they'd trumpet this to the world eludes me.
