To the non US posters, my reference to US Politics was not intended to center the US, but to refer to where this conflict originated… also, it sounds like old people get a much better deal where you live… speaking as someone who is likely to die sooner than ilx’s millennials… I have a shit ton of anxiety about the affordability of health care, the social security system, and affordable housing that is accessible for people with mobility problems… because those are things that I am going to be dealing with sooner and I think a lot has to change pretty damn quickly

just looking at the first paragraph, the title of the journal, and the masthead reminded me how long I've been out of academia because I don't know what the title of the magazine means (I probably did at one point, or maybe it's newer trendy term that I'm too old to know), I did recognize the name of a former professor whose class I rarely showed up for, and I confess at first it made me think of the bird vomit eating thing ... reverse peristalsis.

*reading ilx feedback* thanks all, here is to more abstract bitching about capitalism while doing nothing whatsoever on the ground to abolish it.

I will never vote for anything again, ever.
don't think abolish capitalism is o the ballot anyway, alas

Just checking because I haven’t read that thread much, but are people pissed about the abstract vs literal thing and being weird about that now, or am I just reading this thread incorrectly

Currently on the Site New Answers page there are 16 threads on baseball... this seems a tad excessive.

you can hide particular boards from displaying in sna in preferences - I had to do this to iltmi years ago because it was spoiling my day every time I saw that 'names for different farts' thread
― Platinum Penguin Pavilion (soref), Monday, 29 April 2024 12:42 (five months ago) link
Yeah that’s a good shout, zing can’t do that but you can at least mute threads for the same reason & strongly recommend it.
― Roman Anthony gets on his horse (gyac), Monday, 29 April 2024 12:49 (five months ago) link
I'm not that bothered tbh, it's just that I said in another thread that there seemed to be a lot of baseball threads all of a sudden ... and there is!
― I've left the box of soup near your shoes (Tom D.), Monday, 29 April 2024 12:52 (five months ago) link
Also, people seem allergic to making new threads on ILE/ILM, probably not great for sna activity if they’re camping out in decades old threads. It’s not like they charge you money to start a new one. I haven’t seen Civil War but like why not just start a new thread for it rather than posting in one for a six year old film? There’s so many discussions that are interesting that get buried in ancient threads. Anyway.

i think necrothreads are of the fascinating quirks of ilx but it is, like... a layer of complexity that takes probably years to get used to. no other message board does it this way because it doesn't make sense lol
― Kate (rushomancy), Monday, 29 April 2024 15:38 (five months ago) link
I like old threads because I like to see what people thought 24 years ago.
― Halfway there but for you, Monday, 29 April 2024 15:45 (five months ago) link
TS: creating a new thread because the appropriate existing thread has 'problematic' posts and getting dragged for not using the existing thread vs bumping the thread w/ problematic posts and getting dragged for unearthing these old problematic posts

Always look to revive decades old threads if it's covering what I am looking for. It's tidy, and shows the history of what people were thinking (not least myself).
It's actually interesting to see toxic posts in a different light, today.
― xyzzzz__, Monday, 29 April 2024 17:59 (five months ago) link
it's good that people have to confront their views from 20 years ago, but for those of us who weren't there it can be a but of an unpleasant shock when we're just looking to chat about a band we like or w/e
― This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 29 April 2024 18:06 (five months ago) link
If there's already a thread that covers the exact topic you want to talk about, post in that thread. Example: [band name] C/D threads.
If there's a thread on a topic that organically expands to include related topics, either post to that thread or start a new one. Example: University Challenge thread, which became the general UK quiz show thread over time but could easily have been split off into multiple threads.
If there's a thread about a specific topic and you want to talk about something loosely related to it but not really, start a new thread! Example: that Annihilation thread - if it was an Alex Garland thread then that'd be fine, but honestly, why NOT start a new thread for a completely different film?
― emil.y, Monday, 29 April 2024 18:13 (five months ago) link
(NB: this is entirely personal opinion and not a mod edict or anything)
― emil.y, Monday, 29 April 2024 18:14 (five months ago) link
i agree on the Annihilation thing, which is one of the reasons why i started it today, because people might not have realized we were talking about it, but also anybody looking for a thread on Annihilation years from now is going to be confused at the lengthy discussion of a completely different movie in the middle of the thread.
― ain't nothin but a brie thing, baby (Neanderthal), Monday, 29 April 2024 18:18 (five months ago) link
Two completely different movies! The chatter about men didn’t really have legs tho, which is maybe the argument for not always starting a new thread for every release (but I agree re civil war)

idk for me there's a temptation to be nostalgic for the "good old days", i think it's nice to have occasional reminders of what it was actually like. i definitely can see how it wouldn't be for everyone, though.
― Kate (rushomancy), Monday, 29 April 2024 18:44 (five months ago) link
It should be easier to change the title of an old thread if the discussion contained within takes an especially sharp swerve.
― Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Monday, 29 April 2024 18:53 (five months ago) link
But then the posts at the beginning of the thread become decontextualised (and sometimes nonsensical). I'm fine with adding on to a title where appropriate and will try to do so in a way that indicates it's a later change, but I don't like swapping out thread titles in general. I must maintain the purity of the archives!
