Just too on the nose

PEN America is outraged by images of an Israeli soldier setting fire to books in a library in Gaza. Israel has an obligation to protect Palestinian cultural heritage in Gaza. https://t.co/xBiHz8g87D

My primary reaction to that statement is that being strongly urged not to support Hamas because Hamas does evil things is kind of moot in the context of ILX in particular or of the vast majority of pro-palestinian protests in general. In the western world I don't see paeans being written to glorify the brave resistance fighters of Hamas. None of the protests highlight demands to supply arms and aid to Hamas. They are demanding a ceasefire and the protection of civilians in Gaza.

I grant that Hamas has most certainly committed war crimes. The ICJ is seeking warrants for the arrest of two leaders of Hamas to answer for its crimes. The arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his closest accomplice in crime get more attention here because we are in fact providing billions in arms and aid to that side of the war.

TBC but it looks like Hamas have captured an Israeli soldier and maybe killed others

Abu Obeida’s statement about Hamas’ ambush of IDF troops inside one of its tunnels, and the killing and capture of a number of them, has dire implications for Netanyahu:

1. It underscores how Israel’s war on Gaza has spectacularly backfired. Rather than ensuring the release of…

My thoughts are we read different reporting. I'm not going to dispute that you haven't seen things. That doesn't mean they don't exist.

First, from the third (April, 2024) issue of the National Students for Justice in Palestine (NSJP) newsletter on page 13 by Rosa Mezerich

"For all its imperfections, Hamas is a progressive organization pursuing a program of national emancipation and democratic reconstruction"

https://nationalsjp.org/the-written-resistance-issue-3

Second, the report from DePaul University last week collating examples of support for Hamas:

https://resources.depaul.edu/leadership-notes/towards-understanding-dialogue/violation-examples/Pages/concerns-risks.aspx

There was a lawsuit filed May 1, 2024 by Greenberg Traurig regarding whether organizations such as NSJP provide material support to terrorist organizations from within the US. Discovery should be interesting.

https://www.gtlaw.com/en/news/2024/05/press-releases/greenberg-traurig-national-jewish-advocacy-center-schoen-law-firm-and-holtzman-vogel-represent-american-and-israeli-victims-of-hamas

I really don't know what the outcome will be. It is certainly rife with potential dangers along many vectors. Here is a WaPo editorial about some of the difficulties between drawing the line between free speech and when action crosses into civil rights violations.

https://archive.md/8WqO9

ILX has no defined purpose so I'm generally not going to begrudge people's individual takes. Where I do gently push back is people using the royal "we" where I don't think they are aware the degree to which their personal views are not representative of ILX as a whole.

My friend in Tel Aviv has just posted that 100k showed up to demonstrate against the government, adding that 60 smaller demonstrations took place in other towns and cities in Israel, which is making her hopeful about change.

Since 7/10, this friend has been helping displaced Israelis and doing mutual aid. She is the sort of person people turn to in times of crisis, and she has been demystifying Israeli institutions/media for my friend in Mexico (and by extension the hostage family she’s close to). After so many months working together, it’s such a shame ‘our’ hostage will not come home alive and his 3yo daughter won’t have a future with her dad.

Which isn’t the same as saying that “nothing happened,” which would be ludicrous and abhorrent.

The descriptions are enough.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 27 May 2024 08:17 (five months ago) link

As far as the IDF is concerned killing a whole lot of civilians does not mean that this can't still be described as a "precision strike" because a certain amount of civilian casualties is allowable.

In an unprecedented move, according to two of the sources, the army also decided during the first weeks of the war that, for every junior Hamas operative that Lavender marked, it was permissible to kill up to 15 or 20 civilians; in the past, the military did not authorize any “collateral damage” during assassinations of low-ranking militants. The sources added that, in the event that the target was a senior Hamas official with the rank of battalion or brigade commander, the army on several occasions authorized the killing of more than 100 civilians in the assassination of a single commander.

More from those xpost CNN live updates:

The United Nation's High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has decried Israel's "horrific" strike on a camp housing displaced people in Rafah on Sunday.
...Despite noting the Israeli military's plans to carry out a review into the strike, Türk called it "shockingly clear" that the decision to strike an area "densely packed with civilians" resulted in the "entirely predictable outcome" of at least 45 deaths.

...Speaking following a visit to Israel last week, US national security adviser Jake Sullivan said he had detected “refinements” to Israel’s plan, which he said was now more “targeted and limited” in scale.

...The IDF said the attack was conducted based on “prior intelligence” indicating that senior officials of Hamas’s West Bank wing were present at the site, and that it had assessed there would be "no expected harm to civilians."

“Before the strike, a number of steps were taken to reduce the risk of harming uninvolved civilians during the strike, including conducting aerial surveillance, the deployment of precise munitions by the IAF, and additional intelligence information,” the IDF said, adding that it "regrets" harm done to civilians.

https://i.postimg.cc/RCgvtQmX/IMG-1268.jpg

It makes the past few months of escalating atrocities and violence come into sharp focus; this was all entirely avoidable. It would be nice for the people finally shocked into saying something about the images from Rafah to have said something months ago, instead of smearing anyone who saw exactly how this would play out as a terrorist supporter.

Roman Anthony gets on his horse (gyac), Monday, 27 May 2024 19:35 (five months ago) link

...Israeli officials have repeatedly said that a ground operation in Rafah, where it believes Hamas’s leadership and four battalions of fighters are camped out with Israeli hostages, is necessary for “total victory”.

Are they still confident about "precision"? So any hostages won't get killed along with any Hamas and collaterals? Maybe more about desperation than confidence at this point, or hellacious swirl ov mental ingredients.

mookieproof, Tuesday, 28 May 2024 02:20 (five months ago) link

Good question.
xxpost If hostages get get killed during their operations, they'll prob say it was because Hamas was using them as human shields, as they used to say about random civilians. But still, the shit would really hit the fan politically (though might matter more for Biden than Bibi, at least for a while).

dow, Tuesday, 28 May 2024 02:23 (five months ago) link

More updates, speaking of precision:

[Israel has told the Biden administration that it used used a precision munition to hit a target in Rafah on Sunday, but that shrapnel from the explosion ignited a fuel tank nearby and started a fire that engulfed a camp for displaced Palestinians and led to dozens of deaths, a US official told CNN.

“We can’t confirm that but it’s what Israel shared with us,” the official said, “and we assume we will learn more once Israel completes its investigation.”

...The Israeli military claimed it struck a Hamas compound in the area, killing two senior officials from the militant group.

The Israel Defense Forces also claimed publicly that the target was not located inside the humanitarian area of Rafah where Palestinians were told to move amid Israel’s operations in southern Gaza.
