kids are out of school, so it's now harder to muster claims of rampant antisemitism when there are no new videos of protestors being beaten by cops but *are* videos of palestinians being gruesomely killed

something something 'shared humanity'

mookieproof, Tuesday, 28 May 2024 04:13 (one month ago) link

humans should recognize the humanity in others. but if you're into dehumanizing other people then at least you have lots of company.

Xp Maryland

The aforementioned red-line might get some of your more "liberal" minded folks outraged. Outrage based on "wtf guys, we kinda said dont do that and now you did. You're making us look bad now, and could you please not break feeble international law so blatently", rather than outrage at the continuation of what has been happening for nearly 8 months now.

H.P, Tuesday, 28 May 2024 04:35 (one month ago) link

With rafah, they've exceeded the bounds that the powers that be set upon them. So people more inclined to make their moral judgements based solely on the policy of their state might start to get a bit more outraged

H.P, Tuesday, 28 May 2024 04:36 (one month ago) link

reasonable!

mookieproof, Tuesday, 28 May 2024 04:37 (one month ago) link

There's an element of attrition here too. There's only so many daily headlines of unrequited civilian deaths you can hear before it starts to weigh on the conscience of the everyman/woman (hopefully)

H.P, Tuesday, 28 May 2024 04:37 (one month ago) link

Xp all too

H.P, Tuesday, 28 May 2024 04:38 (one month ago) link

well let's not go too far (in america, at least, where brown people are terrorists until proven otherwise)

but it does seem like a shift if piers fucking anthony has questions

mookieproof, Tuesday, 28 May 2024 04:42 (one month ago) link

lol i meant piers morgan

piers anthony would be much more pedophilic about the whole thing

mookieproof, Tuesday, 28 May 2024 04:43 (one month ago) link

I'd agree with that H.P, I think the cumulative nature of things is an important factor, but also the fact that people's perceptions of things often has a lag time (though this can also go in the other direction, where people start to tune out, and support/pressure can start to decrease instead of increasing)

_They care about killing as many Palestinians as possible, and anyone who believes otherwise is deluding themselves._

I believe otherwise. A criminal _indifference_ to the death of people in Gaza is another story. If you think that distinction doesn't matter, fine, think that.

It isn’t indifference, they want Palestinians dead.

Having various officials out there sounding like Simonyan on RT does shift it some way beyond indifference I think, if we're looking at intent or motivation

this was harrowing, thought I'd see some mention of it.
Mads Gilbert's book Night In Gaza from 10 years ago could be describing the same experiences.
What was new to me was the depiction of Gaza from before October 7th. Am hearing about the great amount of destruction of institutions I wouldn't expect to have existed after reading work from 10 and 20 years ago. Universities and knowledge they stored destroyed.

also this, which I hadn't really seen spelled out yet: https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/israel-hamas-war-day235-1.7216768

Israeli tanks advanced to the centre of Rafah for the first time on Tuesday, witnesses said, three weeks into a ground offensive in the southern Gaza city that has stirred global condemnation for its continued civilian toll.

Tanks and armoured vehicles mounted with machine guns were spotted near Al-Awda mosque, a central Rafah landmark, the witnesses told Reuters. The Israeli military said its forces continued to operate in the Rafah area, without commenting on reported advances into the city centre.

Overnight, its forces battered the city with airstrikes and tank fire, residents said. New strikes overnight killed a total of 16 people in the Tel al-Sultan neighbourhood in northwest Rafah, according to the Palestinian Civil Defence and the Palestinian Red Crescent.

"Tank shells are falling everywhere in Tel al-Sultan. Many families have fled their houses in western Rafah under fire throughout the night," one resident told Reuters via a chat app.

they want Palestinians dead

I have a specific problem with just saying "they" without a clear referent. There's no doubt this applies to some factions in Israel whose leaders plainly state this attitude. But 100,000 Israelis recently demonstrated against their government's war policies. Where do they fit into "they"?

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Tuesday, 28 May 2024 16:26 (one month ago) link

fwiw the original referent was "Israeli officials." idk if that sole meaning endured over the conversation but it was less vague at the start

rob, Tuesday, 28 May 2024 16:30 (one month ago) link

I would assume "they" means the people responsible for ordering the strikes

Just wonder why some people were unmoved before Rafah, despite it being the same scorched earth tactics they have used all along. Why were you unmoved by dead kids in Gaza City or Khan Younis?

I think it's underestimated how much the PR war aspects of this are like ... indirectly related to the facts on the ground

that one particular hospital being bombed was met with a totally different PR reaction than all the other hospitals that get bombed

that Rafah became a "Tragic accident"

these all feel like reactions to *the mass behavior of people on social media* and the entire PR crisis aspect of this is constantly being managed to prevent the kind of spikes that led to IE 2020 george floyd protests...that the goal is to disrupt righteous anger from the public

xheugy eddy (D-40), Tuesday, 28 May 2024 18:44 (one month ago) link

in other words, the question isn't 'why are people more mad now' its more like ... there was an 'organic' spike of anger now and attempts are made to defuse the potency of that mass anger ... that these organic spikes come from real events but are 'managed' into having less of an effect and so it seems weird because the spikes dont accomplish what they should and instead lead to this feeling of 'why is everyone a little madder than they were last time'. that they've done an alarmingly good job of preventing what should be tipping-point moments where public sentiment overwhelms

I asked my mother, this morning, the same question— she replied that she felt that Israel had exhausted its number of “oops, that was a mistake” excuses, that there was no mistaking the intentionality, any more

From Reuters:

"We received distress calls from residents in Tel Al-Sultan where drones targeted displaced citizens as they moved from areas where they were staying toward the safe areas," the deputy director of ambulance and emergency services in Rafah, Haitham al Hams, said.
Palestinian health officials said 19 civilians had been killed in Israeli airstrikes and shelling across Gaza. Israel accuses Hamas militants of hiding among civilians, something Gaza's ruling Islamist group denies

Where ever/as long as there are Palestinians, there are Hamas cancer cells, seems to be current thinking.

in the documentary I link above there’s an interview with a palestinian boy turning 18. he says that he and every one of his friends agree that what every single palestinian boy wants more than anything is a rifle. so they can take back what is theirs. so in a way i can understand the israeli point of view. it’s not paranoid to think of palestinian civilians as the enemy. they all really do hate you, and many of them have guns, and many of them really will try to kill you. i mean how else could it possibly be when you have harassed, demonized and murdered a people for decades? are they supposed to not be courageous? to not be brave? to not resist? to not fight? we’re saying the vichy french were examples now?

the reporter asks the boy what he wished for when he blew out the candles on his cake and he says, to be reunited with my friends who have been killed.

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 30 May 2024 15:01 (one month ago) link

^^^ this is important to understand in any possible resolution. In fact this has shaped the situation since at least the 1920s if not earlier - the cycle of Palestinians resisting and hating the presence of Zionists and Zionists experiencing the hatred and violent resistance and fearing it, which often in turn entrenched them more against the Palestinians. Even Zionists who hoped to coexist with rather than displace Palestinian Arabs were often turned away from that hope by the cycle of violence that was beyond their control. An Israeli I know once told me "I think what Israel has done to the Palestinians is horrible. But given the chance, they do the same to us." Another Israeli told me he remembers serving in the West Bank and hearing "Iftach al Yahud!" ("slaughter the Jews") from mosque loudspeakers. Both were at least liberal politically and had supported the Oslo process. The Second Intifada was a huge factor in the rise of the far right. I say all this as analysis, not justification. Right or wrong, most people take violent threats against them as a bad thing, and people under violence or threat of violence tend to focus on the immediacy of the threat rather than its historical context/who was the first mover.

I think that hatred can be changed and calmed, but you can't just tear down the walls and assume everyone will run to hug each other.

This is one problem that gets me in a little bit of a mental knot... I'm against United States - World Police Force on principle.... but how else will Israel and Palestine live in peace without a larger power enforcing it with VERY active involvement. <--- this being the case for (what I see as) the more practical and realisric two-state solution.

H.P, Thursday, 30 May 2024 23:32 (one month ago) link

Realism and practicality also teaches us that the USA cannot be trusted to do this...... so what happens? What is to be done?

H.P, Thursday, 30 May 2024 23:35 (one month ago) link

Realize that there will never be a two-state solution.

I do, but I don’t think that’s what HP was getting at

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Friday, 31 May 2024 03:27 (one month ago) link

Honestly, all I'm getting at is for someone to give me some answers. Some hope.

H.P, Friday, 31 May 2024 04:08 (one month ago) link

Not implying I'm owed it or anything like that. I'm just sick of being outraged and dissapointed. I want to be able to point to a possible future. I want an idea to latch on to. I want hope for something better. But I don't know where to find it.

H.P, Friday, 31 May 2024 04:09 (one month ago) link

Realize that there will never be a two-state solution.

H.P.'s questions are equally valid with a one state solution tho?

An Israeli I know once told me "I think what Israel has done to the Palestinians is horrible. But given the chance, they do the same to us."

An interesting piece from a while back that I read earlier this year.

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/07/south-africa-apartheid-white-afrikaners-the-inheritors/670554/

"He just couldn’t forgive Black people for forgiving him. Paradoxically, being left undisturbed served as an ever-present reminder of his guilt, of how wrongly he had treated his maid and other Black people under apartheid. “The Bible was right about a thing or two,” he wrote. “It is infinitely worse to receive than to give, especially if … the gift is mercy.”"
