when someone comes to you to say they're having problems logging in and the error message specifically states "incorrect user name or password". like...it means what it says, what am I going to do other than tell you "reset your password, doofus"

a client attending an event yesterday asked me(ie me who is importantly *not at the event*), why his badge had incorrecr info on it i’m like, sir i dont know why but i recommend that you TELL THE EVENT STAFF and get them to print you a new badgelike i understand your need to trumpet to everyone that something was screwed up but this email is just an inefficient use of everyone’s time

Blame Wufoo or whatever on those name badges.
Sometimes, I'll be given a spreadsheet of fields and asked to generate hundreds of nametags with Adobe macros — {FIRST NAME} {LAST NAME} • {TITLE}, {BUSINESS NAME}.
But then, I have to go back through there and correct the names that are in ALL CAPS, or make consistent someone who works for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and one who works for the F.B.I., etc.
And with some of them, I just let Providence ride it on out.

yeah i’ve been in name badge creation hell before and it sucks for sure
― werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 28 June 2024 20:58 (one year ago)
I've been going through this process with my water company for awhile.
1.) Enter username or register an account. Okay, let's register an account.
2.) That email address is already connected to an account. Fine, then. I'll reset the password.
3.) The email address you entered is not in our system. Please register an account.
I wound up having to call on an actual telephone to hear what my balance was and then pay through my bank's website.
― pplains, Friday, 28 June 2024 20:59 (one year ago)
yeah i've had that happen on 2 or 3 sites and could not get it resolved, I think Afterpay was the last company I had that problem with.
― perpetually awkward, perennially unhappy (Neanderthal), Friday, 28 June 2024 21:01 (one year ago)
speaking of fucked up badges, the people who process new hires used macros to create like 500 new accounts back in 2022....and one of them fucked the source document up and deleted an isolated cell, so the first names were now no longer in alignment with the last names, and they ran it, and so everybody had an email address that had their first name and someone else's last name.
then they just said "oh well the way the cookie crumbles we'll fix it in 5 days or 240, just apologize to them on my behalf til we get it fixed"

The reappearance of whatever the video feature of RYM is. Seems to crop up randomly and block text I'm trying to read. I thought they'd stopped using it cos I remember it being annoying a few years ago. Po9ssibly I just got a stronger ad or pop up blocker that is no longer blocking it.Mobile version seems to skip it.

"OK if it'll get you to shut up"

customers in line at the post office for whom the act of packing and taping their own shipping box is apparently too difficult or stressful. This past week alone, on two separate occasions, I had to stand behind people who approached the counter with a handful of items and an unassembled usps box.

Vinyl records with 2 or more LPs and they pressed the first vinyl with Sides 1 and 4 and the second vinyl with Sides 2 and 3.

― Muad'Doob (Moodles), Wednesday, 10 July 2024 20:31 (eleven months ago)
aiui, had to do with those old players that would switch to the next record in a stack, so it'd play side 1, then automatically move onto the next record and play side 2. never saw one in action though, tbh.

I had one. It was handy. Not every 2LP set was arranged 1-4, 2-3...I appreciated the ones that were. I didn't think about the friction rubbing my records smooth when they dropped.
― Ippei's on a bummer now (WmC), Wednesday, 10 July 2024 20:44 (eleven months ago)
I was always convinced the suspended record would drop when the first one was still playing, ruining both the bottom record and the stylus, so I stopped using that feature after a couple plays.

My step-father owned a Hallmark store in the 80s and would play classical music over the speakers. He used one of those stacked record players so that he only had to flip the records over every hour or so.
Granted, he didn't really need to have the sides play in consecutive order, but it would've still come in handy.

also...italics
when you're in a room full of people, clearly state someone's name, that person gets ready to start responding, and someone whose name isn't even anything remotely close to that person's name interrupts and asks "WERE YOU TALKING TO ME?"

bought my first eu-mandated captured-bottle-cap today and, well, it's awkward.
is the idea that they remain together? to reduce litter? but haven't they just created a different problem - that they are now harder to recycle - the bottle and the top are typically made of different plastics (PET and HDPE) and shouldn't be recycled together. i always separate mine.
― koogs, Monday, 12 August 2024 17:49 (ten months ago)
some people are working on it, but, yeah, currently a problem

Yeah I've been quietly annoyed at these, I for one did not know the caps should be recycled together and maybe if they'd just put a message on them or something before doing this? I have arthritic hands and it makes bottles that much harder to open now, also the danger of scraping the cap on my nose when I drink.

Dunno if irrationally angry, but I've just seen an angry social media post about the "thousands of Iraqis who died in the Iraq war" and every time I see this I want to reply with "what the fuck, it was AT LEAST A MILLION PEOPLE, PROBABLY A LOT MORE! There are reliable studies you can even cite!" but it would be a bad thing to post at someone who is on the right side, so I'm posting it here instead.

Something that happened here, when I was trying to italicize one part of an imaginary email address:
<p>- "Your email address is darlene.<em>huang</✧✧✧@globaltele✧✧✧.c✧✧?"</p>
System tried to disguise it with the little diamonds (the ✧'s) and then all hell broke loose.

I'm very proud of this, btw.
