I met him once in his San Francisco art gallery. He met with the art class I was in and we all talked about art for a while. He was legit.

For my high school friends and I, Fernwood 2 Night was much more of an obsession than SNL. I've always been curious how it would hold up--I expect I'd be disappointed.

(Or maybe I'd be surprised, I don't know. I tried rewatching Buffalo Bill with Dabney Coleman once and didn't get past an episode or two.)

Wow. Towne was almost as central to American film in the '70s as the big-name directors; going by Sam Wasson's The Big Goodbye, Chinatown was as much or even more his as it was Polanski's.

Even after he was noticed, it was a struggle. At 52, he founded a poetry publishing company in New York. It barely covered his expenses.

But by then, an old connection had come to his rescue. In 1969, he befriended the heirs of an Italian nobleman who after his death had left a trove of Spanish and Italian old master paintings. Starting as an agent for the nobleman’s heirs, he began selling art to the Louvre, the Prado, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Getty and other major museums. As a result, he became prosperous enough to finance his life as a poet.
