Dunes is... not very cool. It's like a haven for underagers with fake IDs mostly.
You could always come to my DJ night Thursdays! But it's at a rock & roller dive bar where I get looked at sideways for playing like bizarre love triangle, much less being able to keep a sustained dance thing going on.

I've said this before on board, but Pierced Arrows was great last night

I should be back in Seattle sometime in the middle of next month, doing another band session! We'll have to get together for a drink one night!

Clay, where do you play? I'll come and request Bizzare Love Triangle, so when you get looks you can point at me and roll yr eyes.
― ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Monday, 24 August 2009 23:14 (fifteen years ago) link
ha, i always play BLT. It's just the aging punk rockers sneer at me for it. Which is a pleasure really.
The Matador on W. Burnside. Thursday nights.
― pastor prayer zoo (Clay), Monday, 24 August 2009 23:16 (fifteen years ago) link
I have various other gigs too but they're more irregular. Second Saturday here, one Friday every three months there, etc. Everybody's a DJ in Portland, it's hard to get gigs/get noticed!
― pastor prayer zoo (Clay), Monday, 24 August 2009 23:18 (fifteen years ago) link
last time i was in portland i saw chromatics at holocene & then danced, it was great. i'll be gone by the time prins rolls through, too bad. thanks for the tips. i definitely want to check out the doug fir, i missed it last time.
clay, where is your dj night? xpost - nevermind. w burnside, i think my friends may live near there
― W i l l, Monday, 24 August 2009 23:20 (fifteen years ago) link
no wait, i think they are on the southeast side? it's all backwards from how we do in dc
― W i l l, Monday, 24 August 2009 23:21 (fifteen years ago) link
nobody lives on the west side except me and a bunch of douchebags.

does the Matador still do the free popcorn?
― this filthy ambulance of a season (jergins), Monday, 24 August 2009 23:23 (fifteen years ago) link
no, but they have decent beer now and still have the stiffest drinks in town, probably. sometimes there is a terrible spanish-language rock band that opens for me. god i should have this thread de-googled now so i don't get fired!

yes.

Check the Portland Mercury for events. You have stuff like Rock Band Night at Ground Kontrol on tuesday, or $5 free-play there on wednesday night all night. There's also the Fez for dancin'.
Saturday, they're showing "The Room" at Cinema 21 and I'll be damned if I'm not going.

Sunday is the pug playdate in the off-leash area of Irving Park at Fremont & NE 7th at like 2:30pm or so. It's always amusing.

Also, if you're up for a beer, post on here and I'm sure a few portland ilxors would be interested
― kingfish, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 01:14 (fifteen years ago) link
Will you might also want to try Branx (http://www.myspace.com/branxpdx). i've heard it's small and can be worthwhile, depending who's playing. also Rotture is right there http://www.rotture.com/ though i don't know the first thing about that place
― this filthy ambulance of a season (jergins), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 02:19 (fifteen years ago) link
Rotture is appaz the hipster meatmarket; this is second-hand information, mind, and from someone who might be a bit quick on the h-word trigger, but rather reliable.
And yeah I'll get a beer! Mini-FAP should happen at some point, though I should warn my work schedule is shit and I'm not available many nights until like 12:30.

W I L L, go see Atole at Work/Sound on the 28th. They always put on a great dance party with live music.
And if you swing the other way, my doom metal band of 12 years -- Witch Mountain, is playing at Dante's on the 28th with Jucifer and Lickity (a synth/punk duo featuring the original drummer from FEAR).
― Nate Carson, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 10:52 (fifteen years ago) link
thanks for the tips, all. i kept pretty busy, didn't really have time for a FAP, but thanks for the offer. <3 portland. you all are some fortunate people to be living there!

kingfish, that wasn't you sitting next to me at b-side tonight, right? cuz there was a dude who looked a lot like you (I think, been awhile since I saw a wdyll) with a ground kontrol shirt, but his beard was black so I assumed no.

If I just want someone to travel to for a solo vacation, hang around and catch some local food and stuff and do low-key stuff for a few days, is Portland a decent idea at this time of the year?
― mh, Thursday, 10 September 2009 21:17 (fifteen years ago) link
Yes, get out here soon before we enter... The Rain Tunnel
― ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Thursday, 10 September 2009 21:19 (fifteen years ago) link
It's an awesome place to do that kind of vacation where you just hang around, eat out, and basically act like you live there and it's just a long weekend.

I will temporarily be in SW off Barbour, hopefully moving to north somewhere near the yellow line (seems to be the area that with the most optimal combination of affordability/convenience) soon. Any location advice accepted and appreciated.
nick: I'm from WA, not Cali, thus more human than monster

If anybody needs a place to live, my landlord's wife is trying to fit folks into a large house at 57th & NE Sandy. It's a decent place in the Hollywood neighborhood for a decent price.
― kingfish, Friday, 11 September 2009 05:43 (fifteen years ago) link
I know some hippie chicks in NE that need a roommate.
― Nate Carson, Friday, 11 September 2009 07:54 (fifteen years ago) link
NOOOOOO hippies. Uh uh. Not happening.
57th/Sandy looks like somewhere from which it would be a pain in the ass to get to downtown Vancouver by public trans.
― super-gay-crazy bitch-made devil-racist beast-mode swag (The Reverend), Friday, 11 September 2009 12:28 (fifteen years ago) link
Yeah, if you're commuting to Vancouver then North Portland is def. the way to go. I haven't spent a lot of time up there, but I looked at renting house a few months ago that was cheap and really cool about 5 blocks from the center of the little Mississippi neighborhood. It seems like a really nice place to live.
If you don't already have one, get a bike, it's soooo silly to live in city with such great capacity for biking and never use it. I'm not trying to push you to become hardcore biker dude commuting across the Columbia (even though it's only five miles) but if just to run out and do errands and explore, bike is u+k.

Be sure to eat at least one cart meal (e.g. Wolf and Bear's at 20th and Belmont, holy shit, get the coffee with the cardamom).
Food carts are my current PDX fixation, they're so goddamned good and cheap, and the people who own and run them seem to have just figured out their lives.

Musicfest NW is this weekend as well

I've spent many a long weekend pretending to live in Portland doing mundane stuff, roaming around, eating, and so on. It's pretty perfect for that.
― joygoat, Friday, 11 September 2009 14:50 (fifteen years ago) link
Reverend, I think if you stay close to I-205 then you won't have too bad of a commute.
Also, speaking of awesome food carts, Taqueria Los Gorditos on the corner of SE Division and 50th Ave. is superb.
