kingfish, that wasn't you sitting next to me at b-side tonight, right? cuz there was a dude who looked a lot like you (I think, been awhile since I saw a wdyll) with a ground kontrol shirt, but his beard was black so I assumed no.

If I just want someone to travel to for a solo vacation, hang around and catch some local food and stuff and do low-key stuff for a few days, is Portland a decent idea at this time of the year?

mh, Thursday, 10 September 2009 21:17 (fifteen years ago) link

Yes, get out here soon before we enter... The Rain Tunnel

ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Thursday, 10 September 2009 21:19 (fifteen years ago) link

It's an awesome place to do that kind of vacation where you just hang around, eat out, and basically act like you live there and it's just a long weekend.

I will temporarily be in SW off Barbour, hopefully moving to north somewhere near the yellow line (seems to be the area that with the most optimal combination of affordability/convenience) soon. Any location advice accepted and appreciated.

nick: I'm from WA, not Cali, thus more human than monster

About as many as would fit in a clown car.

Aimless, Friday, 11 September 2009 00:29 (fifteen years ago) link

1 and 1/2 clown cars

If anybody needs a place to live, my landlord's wife is trying to fit folks into a large house at 57th & NE Sandy. It's a decent place in the Hollywood neighborhood for a decent price.

kingfish, Friday, 11 September 2009 05:43 (fifteen years ago) link

I know some hippie chicks in NE that need a roommate.

Nate Carson, Friday, 11 September 2009 07:54 (fifteen years ago) link

NOOOOOO hippies. Uh uh. Not happening.

57th/Sandy looks like somewhere from which it would be a pain in the ass to get to downtown Vancouver by public trans.

super-gay-crazy bitch-made devil-racist beast-mode swag (The Reverend), Friday, 11 September 2009 12:28 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, if you're commuting to Vancouver then North Portland is def. the way to go. I haven't spent a lot of time up there, but I looked at renting house a few months ago that was cheap and really cool about 5 blocks from the center of the little Mississippi neighborhood. It seems like a really nice place to live.

If you don't already have one, get a bike, it's soooo silly to live in city with such great capacity for biking and never use it. I'm not trying to push you to become hardcore biker dude commuting across the Columbia (even though it's only five miles) but if just to run out and do errands and explore, bike is u+k.

awesome, i am doing this at the end of the month. looking at someone on ilm's list of portland music was as far as i was gonna go in terms of planning activities

peter falk's panther burns (schlump), Friday, 11 September 2009 14:18 (fifteen years ago) link

Be sure to eat at least one cart meal (e.g. Wolf and Bear's at 20th and Belmont, holy shit, get the coffee with the cardamom).

Food carts are my current PDX fixation, they're so goddamned good and cheap, and the people who own and run them seem to have just figured out their lives.

ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Friday, 11 September 2009 14:41 (fifteen years ago) link

Musicfest NW is this weekend as well

kingfish, Friday, 11 September 2009 14:45 (fifteen years ago) link

I've spent many a long weekend pretending to live in Portland doing mundane stuff, roaming around, eating, and so on. It's pretty perfect for that.

joygoat, Friday, 11 September 2009 14:50 (fifteen years ago) link

Reverend, I think if you stay close to I-205 then you won't have too bad of a commute.

Also, speaking of awesome food carts, Taqueria Los Gorditos on the corner of SE Division and 50th Ave. is superb.

Darin, Friday, 11 September 2009 16:32 (fifteen years ago) link

That was kind of one of the pleasant surprises when I moved out to east county a couple of weeks ago -- there are taco trucks everywhere with buche, lengua, tripa, cabeza, etc.

righteousmaelstrom, Friday, 11 September 2009 18:37 (fifteen years ago) link

close to I-205

rong end of Vancouver

I have a bike but it needs fixing and I'm totally penny-pinching at this point. In any event, it won't be coming down with me, at least not right away.

super-gay-crazy bitch-made devil-racist beast-mode swag (The Reverend), Friday, 11 September 2009 19:16 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, do whatever you can to fix your bike; once you do that, you can get around the city with ease

kingfish, Friday, 11 September 2009 19:22 (fifteen years ago) link

Can't stress that enough. Portland is uniquely suited to biking, in some ways because it is ill-suited to other forms of transit: driving sucks a lot, things are just a bit too spread out for walking, and transit is good but not excellent.

I didn't realize this at first and spent a few months trapsing around waiting way too long for bus transfers on trips that would have taken ten minutes to leisurely ride.

Alright when is beerztime for up and coming ilxor.com population center Portland, OR? I've got the next three nights off, just FYI.

North Portland: tell me about this place.

North Portland is awesome.

kingfish, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 06:29 (fifteen years ago) link

Tell me about different parts of North Portland! I don't know anything.

super-gay-crazy bitch-made devil-racist beast-mode swag (The Reverend), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 06:49 (fifteen years ago) link

Are we talking St. John's and the fifth quadrant proper, or like Mississippi/Alberta? Both are awesome in their own ways. I'd live in Mississippi if I'd found a place. St. John's is v cool, but difficult to travel from to SE and other normally pertinent areas. I'd happily live there if I only rarely had to go west/southeast.

ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 08:17 (fifteen years ago) link

St Johns looks far outside of walking distance from the yellow line, which is the most important thing. Mississippi looks like a good location. In what ways is it awesome? The areas north and northwest of there would work, too.
