How many ilxors do we have here now?

About as many as would fit in a clown car.

Aimless, Friday, 11 September 2009 00:29 (fifteen years ago)

1 and 1/2 clown cars

If anybody needs a place to live, my landlord's wife is trying to fit folks into a large house at 57th & NE Sandy. It's a decent place in the Hollywood neighborhood for a decent price.

kingfish, Friday, 11 September 2009 05:43 (fifteen years ago)

I know some hippie chicks in NE that need a roommate.

Nate Carson, Friday, 11 September 2009 07:54 (fifteen years ago)

NOOOOOO hippies. Uh uh. Not happening.

57th/Sandy looks like somewhere from which it would be a pain in the ass to get to downtown Vancouver by public trans.

super-gay-crazy bitch-made devil-racist beast-mode swag (The Reverend), Friday, 11 September 2009 12:28 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, if you're commuting to Vancouver then North Portland is def. the way to go. I haven't spent a lot of time up there, but I looked at renting house a few months ago that was cheap and really cool about 5 blocks from the center of the little Mississippi neighborhood. It seems like a really nice place to live.

If you don't already have one, get a bike, it's soooo silly to live in city with such great capacity for biking and never use it. I'm not trying to push you to become hardcore biker dude commuting across the Columbia (even though it's only five miles) but if just to run out and do errands and explore, bike is u+k.

It's an awesome place to do that kind of vacation where you just hang around, eat out, and basically act like you live there and it's just a long weekend.

awesome, i am doing this at the end of the month. looking at someone on ilm's list of portland music was as far as i was gonna go in terms of planning activities

peter falk's panther burns (schlump), Friday, 11 September 2009 14:18 (fifteen years ago)

Be sure to eat at least one cart meal (e.g. Wolf and Bear's at 20th and Belmont, holy shit, get the coffee with the cardamom).

Food carts are my current PDX fixation, they're so goddamned good and cheap, and the people who own and run them seem to have just figured out their lives.

ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Friday, 11 September 2009 14:41 (fifteen years ago)

Musicfest NW is this weekend as well

kingfish, Friday, 11 September 2009 14:45 (fifteen years ago)

I've spent many a long weekend pretending to live in Portland doing mundane stuff, roaming around, eating, and so on. It's pretty perfect for that.

joygoat, Friday, 11 September 2009 14:50 (fifteen years ago)

Reverend, I think if you stay close to I-205 then you won't have too bad of a commute.

Also, speaking of awesome food carts, Taqueria Los Gorditos on the corner of SE Division and 50th Ave. is superb.

Darin, Friday, 11 September 2009 16:32 (fifteen years ago)

That was kind of one of the pleasant surprises when I moved out to east county a couple of weeks ago -- there are taco trucks everywhere with buche, lengua, tripa, cabeza, etc.

righteousmaelstrom, Friday, 11 September 2009 18:37 (fifteen years ago)

close to I-205

rong end of Vancouver

I have a bike but it needs fixing and I'm totally penny-pinching at this point. In any event, it won't be coming down with me, at least not right away.

super-gay-crazy bitch-made devil-racist beast-mode swag (The Reverend), Friday, 11 September 2009 19:16 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, do whatever you can to fix your bike; once you do that, you can get around the city with ease

kingfish, Friday, 11 September 2009 19:22 (fifteen years ago)

Can't stress that enough. Portland is uniquely suited to biking, in some ways because it is ill-suited to other forms of transit: driving sucks a lot, things are just a bit too spread out for walking, and transit is good but not excellent.

I didn't realize this at first and spent a few months trapsing around waiting way too long for bus transfers on trips that would have taken ten minutes to leisurely ride.

North Portland: tell me about this place.

super-gay-crazy bitch-made devil-racist beast-mode swag (The Reverend), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 04:44 (fifteen years ago)

North Portland is awesome.

Dave Depper (Davey D), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 04:53 (fifteen years ago)

Which part?

kingfish, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 06:29 (fifteen years ago)

Tell me about different parts of North Portland! I don't know anything.

super-gay-crazy bitch-made devil-racist beast-mode swag (The Reverend), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 06:49 (fifteen years ago)

Are we talking St. John's and the fifth quadrant proper, or like Mississippi/Alberta? Both are awesome in their own ways. I'd live in Mississippi if I'd found a place. St. John's is v cool, but difficult to travel from to SE and other normally pertinent areas. I'd happily live there if I only rarely had to go west/southeast.

ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 08:17 (fifteen years ago)

St Johns looks far outside of walking distance from the yellow line, which is the most important thing. Mississippi looks like a good location. In what ways is it awesome? The areas north and northwest of there would work, too.

super-gay-crazy bitch-made devil-racist beast-mode swag (The Reverend), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 19:43 (fifteen years ago)

I think Mississippi (haven't actually spent that much time up there, but did look at living there) is at that point in a neighborhood's development where there are shops and bars and restaurants but it's still mostly people who live close whom you'll see on a daily basis. Not that that's such a huge thing, it just feels very neighborhood-y. Housing also cheaper, I looked at a 2-bedroom house for $900 that, if I'd faxed in the application 2hrs earlier, I'd be living in right now.

ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Thursday, 17 September 2009 00:11 (fifteen years ago)

Fuck, I just got my first speeding ticket ever on the way home from Astoria. It was on that fraction of the roadway right in Clatskanie where the limit halves, then goes back to normal over the course of like less than a mile.

kingfish, Thursday, 17 September 2009 00:50 (fifteen years ago)

Hey, I don't post here much, but since I live in the Mississippi area, thought I'd respond. I've lived up here for about a year now (used to live further out in NE), and it's really a great place to live. A lot of cheap food (there's a block of food carts just going in this month), good bars, parks, etc.

In terms of the areas directly adjacent to the yellow line, it kinda seems like the one with the most urban neighborhood-y feel; the areas to the north of it (Piedmont, Kenton) are more straight residential, I think mostly families living there.

I'll second the recommendation to get your bike working here as soon as you can. Trimet connects NoPo pretty well to downtown, but not as well to other parts of the eastside. Before I started biking most everywhere, I often would have to take the bus downtown, transfer, and come back across the river to get to where I was going.

Ari (whenuweremine), Thursday, 17 September 2009 01:00 (fifteen years ago)

As of right now, I don't really have anywhere I need to go except for Vancouver, Downtown, and maybe the occasional trip to Southwest. Of course this is all contingent on my employment situation and how that changes. Hopefully I can get a bit of exploring done tomorrow.

I am also back and thirsty

"I get through more mojitos.." (bear, bear, bear), Thursday, 17 September 2009 04:56 (fifteen years ago)

xp Clatskanie is an incorporated city. Small towns like that are notorious for speed traps.

The Reverend, Thursday, 17 September 2009 05:05 (fifteen years ago)

Might have a job, might not have a roof. :/

The Reverend, Saturday, 19 September 2009 06:29 (fifteen years ago)

Totally a better and less common situation than the converse. If you need any practical housing finding advice, I am a recent expert, feel free to webmail.

And for the record, any newcomer PDX ilxor has a standing offer from me for a night's free beers in the event of a Portland FAP.

(One night per ilxor, certain restrictions apply, must be willing to get Drunked)
