Puma b10wj0b ads

If you haven't seen them, look here and here .

They've been bouncing around the interweb for a week or so (I think), along with speculation as to whether they're real or not. For a while the theory was that they were done for the Brazilian edition of Maxim. (As it turns out, there is no Brazilian edition of Maxim.)

So now the Puma people have come out and said no, absolutely, these are fake, we don't know where they came from, we will get our lawyers on you if you host these images on your website, etc. etc.

Obvious cynical conspiracy theory question: Is this all just brilliant viral marketing? Puma makes unacceptable ads, leaks them to the net and waits for them to spread, then denies the whole thing when it hits the news (the denial, of course, causes even more people to seek out the "fake" ads). A whole ad campaign for free.

Even if Puma hasn't done this, has anyone? Why doesn't this scenario happen more often?

Marcel Post (Marcel Post), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Other people have done it. Usually not as blatantly. I read a piece in Marketing estimating that about 25% of web-memes are seeded by some agency or other.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

For a second there I was worried. And then excited. And then worried again.

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Why doesn't this scenario happen more often?

because I don't own Pumas? I really need to go out and buy some now.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

also, the visible spunk is really unnecessary. Had I been the AD on this one, I would have dropped it.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

The visible spunk is all that makes me think this wasn't Puma.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

One thing I do wonder is if any of the stuff in Adbusters etc is commissioned secretly by the companies concerned.

"Yeah, yeah, it suggests we're exploitative deathmongers - but they won't half want a burger when they see it!"

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I really like the blue ones the girl is wearing. I think I will get some this weekend.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Get some new Pumas that is.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

We know what you meant.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

It's far tamer than Diesel ads etc. if not for the "evidence". Also fairly well designed, I think.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

That woman has tremendously large hands.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"...must...buy...Pumas..."

Honestly, I haven't thought about Pumas this much in about 10 years. Mission Accomplished.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

That woman has tremendously large hands.

all the better to yank you with, my dear

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

She's got like, Gollum fingers or something.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

mmm...Gollum fingers...

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I am surprised that felicity made no mention of the plaid skirts.

The matching shoes and bag is a cute touch.

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

This ad's real though, and I love it.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

> I read a piece
> in Marketing estimating that about 25% of web-memes are seeded by
> some agency or other.

I think that "25% of web-memes seeded by agencies" is a meme started by Marketing.

fletrejet, Wednesday, 12 March 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, the matching bag and shoes is what makes me think it's real. No stylist would ever do that. But now it seems okay for gareth to have the Gola airport bag.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Reminds me of the ads from "Crazy People":"Come in The Caribbean" "Jaguar:The kind of Car That Makes Women want to give you handjobs" complete with "Yes,I would like a handjob" qustionaires from the dealer.

Shit movie, but the ads are classic.

Charles McCain, Wednesday, 12 March 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

from the look on her face he's probably just putting his mouth on her thigh and blowing

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't that why they call them blowjobs? *mock stupid expression*

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I miss my old baseball turf shoes.

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I prefer Adidas branded b10wj0bs.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I was gonna say, someone photoshop in some old school vans and that would become a t-shirt silkscreen for me in under 60 secs.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Which do people like better? I like the blue one.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

the vans one (aka the blue one with photoshopped vans instead of those fugly pumas).

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i like the blue one too, i like the sweatshirt jacket

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

the blue one is a better pic and the shoes are cooler, but the red one is more stimulating, probably because the top is more revealing.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I like the blue one for the leggings more than anything, also I am a sucker for zippered tops. Can anybody tell me which country it is where girls dress like this? Bcz we shd have a FAP there. Or at least me.

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah the jacket in the blue one is cute

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

girls dress like this in oly

it is the only thing aside from my girlfriend which makes it remotely livable

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

although the spoog in the red one is more artistic

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

whatever you do, please don't photoshop ned's face anywhere near these ads...

(OH NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, I've changed my mind. I like the blue one better now too. it's just that I like seeing the girl's arm. OK, time for me to stop looking at these.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Olybabes here I ahem

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The blue one has better depth of field.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Why do I think the blue one is blonde and the red one is brunette?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i do too

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

This is fun; "spot the difference."

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

they're both brunettes, definitely.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't it obvious they are the same model? You men and your fantasies.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

no, it's quite obv

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

but is it the same guy? is the guy in the red one more artistic?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 13 March 2003 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I imagine for production reasons they had to use different guys. Studio time can get expensive.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 March 2003 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

they should really photoshop out the splooge and use these ads

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 March 2003 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

now I snicker at your post, felicity! 'production reasons' huh huh.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 13 March 2003 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

they should really photoshop out the splooge and use these ads

what would they say she's doing?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 13 March 2003 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

dialing down the center for 1-800-CALL-ATT

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 March 2003 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

let's leave carrot top out of this.

what about 'polishing his buckle'?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 13 March 2003 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i still fail to see how this is any "worse" than that fresh jive ad i saw once where the guy is sitting on the edge of the bed lacing up his sneakers and the (still naked) chiXor is sitting upright looking at him passively/longingly

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 March 2003 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

was there splooge in that one?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 13 March 2003 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

no but you could see almost all of her boobie

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 March 2003 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

almost all? how bout the nip'?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 13 March 2003 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

no. i also just remembered you could see some of her buttcrack

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 March 2003 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Why is the woman in the Puma ad still going down on that guy if he's already sploojed?

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 13 March 2003 02:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Because it's from the same ad agency that handles the Pringles account, and they're still stuck on "once you pop, you can't stop."

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 13 March 2003 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

afterglow

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 13 March 2003 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

No, that was the *other* guy.

(congrats folks - that's officially my dirtiest ilx post ever)

Kim (Kim), Thursday, 13 March 2003 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, this is the first time I've typed splooge here.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 13 March 2003 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

shouldn't the splooge have been on the shoe?

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 13 March 2003 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"splooge"=dirty

ile=tweeist board ever.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 13 March 2003 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I was sort of kidding/teasing... but yeah, I am a bit tweeish about uttering/typing sexual terms in public

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 13 March 2003 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

me too.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 13 March 2003 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i'd rather go home with the red one and date the blue one

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 13 March 2003 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, the red one is in a more comfortable position = she's the pro

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 March 2003 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah plus she's got him slightly off the ground = a sure sign that he's in good hand(s)

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 13 March 2003 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

but once that seamy but ultimately shallow three week dalliance ended i'd be down for doing some serious hanging out with blue

she seems cool

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 13 March 2003 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

lets face it we'll never land hoez like these

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 March 2003 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

:(

suicidegirls it is

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 13 March 2003 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

this is the suicide girls aesthetic breaking out into wider consciousness

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 March 2003 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

'lets face it we'll never land hoez like these'

That's why you need the Pumas, obv. Christ you people are slow sometimes.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 13 March 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

is it wrong that i want to be the girl more than the guy in these ads?

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 March 2003 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

uh, yeah

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 13 March 2003 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

homophobe

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 March 2003 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

taking sides: spooge vs splooge

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 13 March 2003 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The guy doesn't have pumas. Also he's boring.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 13 March 2003 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, he's just standing there

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 March 2003 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

what do you mean he doesn't have pumas?!

anyway i didnt say i wouldnt WANT to be the girl, i just said given the choice...

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 13 March 2003 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

(oh. wait. er..)

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 13 March 2003 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a testament to Red and Blue that I didn't even notice his shoes.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 13 March 2003 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah they do good work

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 13 March 2003 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't know, they can't be that good. for the "sploodge" to land there it must have fell vertically hence not particularly exciting bj.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 13 March 2003 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

unless it dripped off the chin

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 13 March 2003 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

!!!!

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 13 March 2003 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i suddenly feel all pruddish.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 13 March 2003 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

please don't photoshop ned's face anywhere near these ads...

Sick. (Haven't seen them yet, now I really don't want to.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 March 2003 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

anyway i think its controversial to suggest that there's a correlation between distance and quality

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 13 March 2003 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

NWA not to thread

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 March 2003 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

(assumes we're talking only about shoes) I like the red ones.

g*bbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 13 March 2003 05:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i like the socks

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 13 March 2003 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

phwoar me too!

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 13 March 2003 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

ahem hem come to olympia hem

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 March 2003 05:58 (twenty-two years ago)

if this is true then you've lost ALL rights to complain abt where you live

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 13 March 2003 06:00 (twenty-two years ago)

it might be a slight xxxageration

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 March 2003 06:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Aren't they the same picture? Just photoshopped? Reminds me of the ACLU ad.

Colin Saunders (csaunders), Thursday, 13 March 2003 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Of course Slate weighed in on the topic.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

This was such a good thread.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)
