Lil' Fancy Kpants (The K is Silent) (ex machina), Saturday, 17 April 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I got myself a livejournal so that I can keep the maudlin side of my online exhibitionism in a relatively secluded corner of the web. Plus that's where I keep my drunk stories.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 17 April 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

the "friends" page is a lovely way to circle stalk too.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 17 April 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i seriously have to say that i am still floored it was jon who started this thread

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 17 April 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to say that I am not even remotely surprised that when racism isn't white-on-black, ile thinks it's hilarious

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 17 April 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

That image was posted on someone's blog.

Lil' Fancy Kpants (The K is Silent) (ex machina), Saturday, 17 April 2004 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah I'm aware of that, it's the outrage it'd garner if its target were different I'm referring to

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 17 April 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

j0hn, "lost in translation" much? or were you on tour during that thread's heyday?

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 17 April 2004 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I think my own tolerance of this stereotype is because most of the kids' who I see fitting this stereotype are all living large off of the teat of their rich parents.

Lil' Fancy Kpants (The K is Silent) (ex machina), Saturday, 17 April 2004 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I have only seen "Lost in Translation" without sound and so can't really comment - yeah tour eats most of my ability to remain current, but I still think an lj image telling black people to get a fuckin' clue or something would be considered a little too hot to handle, while openly racist anti-asian stuff is just ho-ho-ho

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 17 April 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with you!

Lil' Fancy Kpants (The K is Silent) (ex machina), Saturday, 17 April 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't see a lot of "ho-ho-ho" on this thread, John.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 17 April 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Let's get back to making fun of teenagers into bad hardcore!

Lil' Fancy Kpants (The K is Silent) (ex machina), Sunday, 18 April 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

bad hardcore?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 18 April 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think there are many people here that thought the above was anything other than an astonishingly racist image - but that said, i'm suprised it took as long as it did for someone to even comment.

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 18 April 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

kind of my point: here's an image from another livejournal:

http://img7.photobucket.com/albums/v21/TheAmericanJesus/sponge_negro.jpg

which I don't suppose would have passed with as little comment.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 18 April 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

and I'm probably going to regret being so instigatory (is that a word or not), but I hate it when virulent racism warrants little better than an "eh"

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 18 April 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I turn off images and there are some posts that just don't warrant a click for me. so yeah, there's where my non-response came from. (still not clicking btw)

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Sunday, 18 April 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

And you think I'm a pussy for carrying a bag????????

Lil' Fancy Kpants (The K is Silent) (ex machina), Sunday, 18 April 2004 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

littlest jon, I don't think of you at all.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Sunday, 18 April 2004 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

LOLzville!

I AM AJA (ex machina), Sunday, 18 April 2004 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The post at the top of the thread sums up the livejournal account I have. (Except for the Staind part. Eeeew.)

That's why mine isn't public.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 18 April 2004 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

That person stalked me for a while and still has me on their friends' list.

Jon, what's your LJ name?

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 18 April 2004 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

pictures of geeks are usually funny, regardless of race. although the particular geek of each race will often have some particular combination of their geekhood and their race combine to form something specifically hilarious.

matthew james (matthew james), Sunday, 18 April 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

and true equality is to respect and acknowledge one another, i think.

matthew james (matthew james), Sunday, 18 April 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

that said i saw the 'AzN' bit and assumed it meant 'ass' and only just realised it meant 'asian' which is, granted, unfair.

matthew james (matthew james), Sunday, 18 April 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still trying to figure out what the hell "pEiNoy" means.

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Sunday, 18 April 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Spelled 'Pinoy,' it's a Filipino-derived word of identity -- as noted here:

The term Pinoy is potentially controversial as well. A neologism in its own right, "Pinoy" refers to Filipinos wherever they are in the world, regardless of whatever Filipino language they are using.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 18 April 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

that pic was up for a short while on a Saturday night (not a high traffic time for ILX). I didn't know what the hell azn pinoy meant and ignored it. As I do most of Williams's pics.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 18 April 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

and as for ile finding it hilarious, if Jon counts as "ILE" than the terrorists have won.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 18 April 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Calm down!

Lil' Fancy Kpants (The K is Silent) (ex machina), Sunday, 18 April 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

bah.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 18 April 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Jon is the Snow Patrol of, etc. He should post on the MTG thread.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 18 April 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i take it that the above cartoon of a black person is supposed to be spongebob in black face?

and j0hn OTMFM here.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 18 April 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The black-space spongebob refers to a printing error at American Greetings (I think), which did accidentally produce loads of cards with exactly that spongebob on them. It's still offensive obv...

(Surely that Jon image is mocking not asians but people who type funny, which may or may not still be reprehensible, but is pretty much par for the course on ILX?)

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 18 April 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Gregory I don't think "stupid Asian pinoy faggot" (what you're left with after you translate the script-kiddiespeak) is specifically directed at people who type funny, no.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 18 April 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I think expecting people to translate the AOL speak and the Pinoy reference for something that appears to be just a tired immature joke is expecting a bit much. Some things are so obviously the product of low intelligence that it hardly seems worth the effort to be offended e.g. a KKK clown on Jerry Springer.

bnw (bnw), Sunday, 18 April 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

ifi think the spongebob thing is funny as a grotesque. but it's all context, you know. and the picture with the kiddiespeak on would certainly be funny without the slogan on it.
i find a lot of the racism that people speak about in an ilx sort of context is often an imagined and heavily theoretical sort which is largely divorced from actual racist acts or sentiments. ('often' here is a critical part of what i'm saying.)

matthew james (matthew james), Sunday, 18 April 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

j0hn, don't you think it was an asian who made that image? I don't know if it was or not but that was the impression i got. this doesn't make it excusable but I tend to try and avoid judgement calls when it comes intraracial racism in other races (boy that was convoluted). I've been shot down far too many times in those situations.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Sunday, 18 April 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Without context, that "pEiNoY" picture is pretty offensive, whereas the spongebob one is just WTF. With (more) context the first is still offensive, but the second seems to be imputing racism to a printing error, which is still more "huh?" than anything else. Though this may be just me.

And Anthony OTM about people's eyes seeing an image, dropping to see it's Jon, then disregarding the image completely.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 18 April 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

You people are so mean to me!

Lil' Fancy Kpants (The K is Silent) (ex machina), Sunday, 18 April 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

in the seven minutes before you responded

yeah ok point taken but I got a real bug up my ass about this kinda thing

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 18 April 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

why's that picture offensive without the slogan? it's just a couple of kids acting like pricks, which is always hugely entertaining.

matthew james (matthew james), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Matthew, are you the M. James who knows Nick Passant, btw? If so, yo!

(Unrelatedly, you=otm throughout, I think)

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

listen i'm sick of people knowing who i am and me not knowing them. this seems to occur in every avenue of my life, be it the internet, or wherever. yes, i was just seeing nick's new place earlier this evening. he seems well. oh, wait, did you used to live with him? i've probably met you and completely forgotten, haven't i? the name rings a bell.

matthew james (matthew james), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Chill dude, I don't really know anything about you except for your propensity to wear Big Gay Flowery shirts.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

apologies, didn't intend to sound pissed off, which is surprising because i managed it spectacularly well, and it would be ungracious considering your support of my angle on this whole thing. i have a habit of forgetting absolutely everyone that i ever meet, so i'm always wondering round getting slightly flustered thinking "how the fuck do these people even know who i am?"

matthew james (matthew james), Sunday, 18 April 2004 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

but i staunchly defend the big gay shirt, they brigten the mood and bring joy to one's friends.

matthew james (matthew james), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

hey, was it you i watched 2002 world cup poland vs south korea with while i had one of those birds eye frozen roast dinners for breakfast? it all comes back to me slowly. that was a very comfortable sitting room you had there.

matthew james (matthew james), Monday, 19 April 2004 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The pinoy diss picture is hilarious! AND THE GUYS IN THE PICTURE ARE PINOY, obviously exaggerating the dress (look at the sharpie tats) and they probably orchestrated the whole thing. Huge difference from the second pic, and the kind of pinoys depicted in the first one actually are wack as fuck.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Saturday, 4 June 2005 08:29 (twenty years ago)

Not that I'm condoning rice-on-rice racism. My high school gang was totally multicultural, and way cooler/tougher than the flip/pun/nammer gangs. Actually the nammer gangs were probably tougher than us.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Saturday, 4 June 2005 08:36 (twenty years ago)

eleven months pass...
The Mat is bustling for noon on a weekday. The hum of spinning washers, the clink of change, and the slam of dryer doors creates a symphony of domestic productivity. I breathe deeply the perfumed soap air. It warms my dampened spirits.

I haphazardly separate and stuff clothes into machines and am two dollars deep into pumping in silver when it happens. "Where mah clothes?! Don't throw shit at me, you lil' bitch!" Before I even turn my head I can tell what this woman looks like: big. Black. Hard. There's a black man in a Minnesota Vikings jacket yelling back at her. "Fuck you, dis mah shit!" He's referring to the claim he's laid on the nearby washer. The woman is throwing a pink plastic clothes bin at him. "Ya broke ass bitch, I'm gonna fight chu!!" There's a third guy trying to defuse the situation, but neither of them hear him. Everyone else has stopped mid-fold to stare, t-shirts and sweatpants held in limp limbo.

She takes a swing at him and he swings back. Both miss. The woman chases him outside. As they pass I smell booze. She's screaming, "Ya bitch, they should kill yo state money ass!! They should kill you!!" Now patron mumbles of disbelief rise above the rinse cycle. My mind drifts to the subtle joy I get from warm socks.

My dryer dream is shaken when the cops show up. Mr. Minnesota shrugs them off slightly conspicuously when they ask him something, and they come inside. The woman's story starts: "He pulled a knife on me two days ago and threw a chair at me and he hit me with a basket..." I get a good look at the woman for the first time. She is addicted to something - dope, pills, deadbeat men.

Immediately the cops go back outside, where Minnesota Joe (at this point I've learned his name is Danny, but it doesn't have as good a ring to it) tells them he didn't do anything. He has his hands shoved deep in his jacket and the cops are yelling at him to take his hands out slowly and turn around. Joe refuses. I wince at this and imagine him having a gun. I realize I am in the line of fire beyond the glass doors, but I don't move. Joe's bluffing. The preemptive wince was for what happens next. The barking goes back and forth until the Viking is eventually thrown face-down into a puddle and cuffed. I hear words like "police brutality," "because I'm black," and several times, "lawyer."

The female officer comes in to ask me if I was a witness, if I thought their use of force was excessive. I want to say that the puddle seemed melodramatic, but instead I lie and say no because she is somewhat attractive. The blues leave as quickly as they came and The Mat returns to its disinterested whirrs and clicks. I wonder if the woman will go bail him out of jail. I glance over at her as I pull a towel out of the dryer. She will.
