mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 05:57 (twenty years ago)

who's with me?

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 05:58 (twenty years ago)

it's over.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:00 (twenty years ago)

What makes you think Feb will be any better?

Huk-L, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:00 (twenty years ago)

i hate you guys. you're the new januaries.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:02 (twenty years ago)

actually on paper january was pretty fucking awesome, but i'm still happy to see it go. being a weather-induced hermit is driving me slowly insane.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:03 (twenty years ago)

Jesus man this thread is so last month.

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:05 (twenty years ago)

It's been near or above zero here for the last week. So I really have no complaints about January, though, hell, anything to get closer to weather that can actually sustain human life without the aid of electricity or cows in the house is good news. I'm running out of cows.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:05 (twenty years ago)

Any month that contains the most depressing day of the year can't be any good. Also, when will this snow melt, already? It's black and loaded with trash and urine and is just the most depressing substance on earth. January does suck.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

february is shorter.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

Hear hear! And it has that lurve holiday in the middle, which is... still bad, but January has no holidays at all.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:08 (twenty years ago)

ade (Adrian Langston), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:09 (twenty years ago)

oh, fuck, man. valentine's day's a whole other kettle of fish. it's the ultimate stumbling block for those of us in perfectly ambiguous relationships who would prefer to keep them that way. FUCK YOU FEBRUARY!

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:12 (twenty years ago)

no more free birthday dinners :.(

lolita corpus (lolitacorpus), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:12 (twenty years ago)

xpost to stence

Oh, yeah. But I didn't get a day off! And there's no presents! It's like Presidents day or something. Not cheerful enough to count for our purposes here.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:13 (twenty years ago)

So we're waiting for March then.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:14 (twenty years ago)

Do Americans get Valentine's Day off? If not, MLK day is a far better holiday. Screw romantic love, not going to work to celebrate the ideals of the civil rights movement is where it's at.
Maybe Canada can have Elijah Harper Day in January.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:15 (twenty years ago)

Do Americans get MLK day off?

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:16 (twenty years ago)

I mean, not really. Not so much. Valentines day, no way.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:16 (twenty years ago)

some americans get MLK day off, yes.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:16 (twenty years ago)

I was under the impression that everybody did. By "some" Americans...

Huk-L, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:17 (twenty years ago)

Not my almost-freelancin', no-benefit-havin' ass.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:18 (twenty years ago)

get one real job.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:18 (twenty years ago)

You Get MLK day off if you work at a bank, a Post office, the government, or a company that still thinks it has to be nice to people.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:19 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I thought maybe it was some, you know, thematic thing.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:20 (twenty years ago)

Is Arizona and New Hampshire still not recognizing MLK day?

donut christ (donut), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 09:11 (twenty years ago)

January was pretty good. but how can it be gone already?

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 09:26 (twenty years ago)

I'm not going to miss it. Came back from Xmas holidays to learn news about Suzy and tried to do my best to sort that out. Then after that I lost my last uncle, had to travel to Turin for the funeral, came back and contacted a bloody awful 'flu-like virus which confined me to bed for most of last week. Oh and the book deal fell through. Quite possibly the worst birthday I've ever had, although really any of the last four ones could qualify for that title.

Red rag to a bull of a question, but could February conceivably be any worse?

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

:-( oh dear.

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 09:48 (twenty years ago)

August is where this shit really gets going.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 10:05 (twenty years ago)

its been mediocre

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 10:09 (twenty years ago)

Don't talk to me about bloody August. I have been asked to speak at a conference in Brighton (Fourth Biennial Conference on 20th Century Music at the University of Sussex innit) over the Bank Holiday weekend and might just do so to take my mind off other matters which tend to trouble my mind at that time of year. However, this means I have to submit an abstract by 11 Feb, i.e. a week on Friday, so yet more pressure to deal with at the moment!

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 10:09 (twenty years ago)

fuck a january.

Nimrod Kovacs (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

seriously.

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

january 2005, I never knew you.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

I got a parking ticket yesterday, the perfect end to a lousy month. So yeah, screw you January 2005.
x-post Is Suzy okay?

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

coming out today, i think.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

I'm glad to see it go. I've spent too much time indoors and can't get anything done because everyone is out of town for the holidays.

RS, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

February is already better in several different ways. Wow, was January ever shit. But it always is, so I've grown to expect it.

But February... apart from the seething pit of awfulness that is Valentine's Day (Hey, my V-Day was rubbish even when I was *in* a relationship) looks set to be exciting already!

The Phantom of the Operating System (kate), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

Valentine's Day is an idiot distraction.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Just once in my life I'd like to be able to celebrate it normally... I was actually upset that Joe didn't bother doing anything at all for it, claiming "but you hate romance and you call it V-day" and all that crap when really it was just a projection excuse that he had, actually, forgotten about it. JUST BECAUSE I HATE IT DOESN'T MEAN I DON'T WANT TO CELEBRATE IT!!!

For once in my life, I'd like to just get a Valentine or something. It doesn't have to be from a lover. Sigh.

The Phantom of the Operating System (kate), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

I had a very enjoyable January, but then I suppose I don't belong on this thread do I? February is great because it contains my birthday and there are other things to look forward to.

Its March that's the big kick in the teeth. You expect it to be some way warmer and sunnier and more optimisitc but when it actually happens its just as cold and miserable as the previous couple of months. Damn false advertising.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

I never send Valentines and I'd be grossly insulted if anyone sent me any. Crass Yank commercialism.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

March is just something that happens to you against your will while you wait for the GLORY AND WONDER THAT IS APRIL!!!

The Phantom of the Operating System (kate), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

Whom are we kidding? Every month sucks.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

lousy Smarch weather

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

lousy July weather. hot sticky sucks

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

March is great, things start to bloom and i get the exact reverse of S.A.D. a lot of big music comes out around then too. the only drawbacks are that i'll have rampant hayfever and all the English clubs will have crashed out of the Champions League by that point.

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

i'm with matt, january wasn't that bad (except the headache i've had for the last two weeks, but whatever).

but february looks fun. several birthdays to celebrate (complete with dancing), dinner parties, trips away, theatre, and i'm looking forward to valentines day. i guess i'm allowed to, since i'm an american? also, got some positive news about work, so i'm in a better mood about employment (although still a bit crabby about it)

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

Nope, every month sucks. October will be no different from July will be no different from April will be no different from February. I'll have to deal with the same shit regardless of climactic conditions.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

I must protest against this denigration of March, as it is the month of a birthday of a fine and upstanding individual of my close personal acquaintance. Why, I see his face in the mirror every morning.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

you should tell him to get his own damn mirror. or is this the mirror above your bed? and woah dude i didn't know!

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

dan?

(dammit, xpost)

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

Dan is in my heart, not my bathroom.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

Whoops, I must amend that, March is good for birthdays. Especially late March. (looks around to make sure Catty hasn't noticed my slip-up.)

The Phantom of the Operating System (kate), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

Birthdays are an idiot distraction.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Feb is shit too, March I can handle. Jan is the wurst though.

Miles Finch, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

like i said, my january wasn't even that bad. actually, technically, it was kind of awesome. but how can anyone enjoy technical awesomeness when its dark by lunchtime and the skies drip slush? well, they can't, which is why fuck you january.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

That aspect doesn't bother me. Darkness suits me. It acts as an agent of cold rationalist entombment, as opposed to the ghastly forced lightness of spring, where we are all supposed to emerge from our cocoon/hibernation, regenerated and made to be happy at pseudo-emotional bayonet point.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

March is good for birthdays. Especially late March.

And in particular 19th March, last day of winter and my birthday. Can't wait, I'll be skipping off around Munich or Amsterdam or Dublin or just some-fkn-where ELSE. Hallelujah.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

One of my favourite Januray's ever. I did sweet FA, but at the same time I wasn't bored and did some stuff like buy too many CD's, went to the movies, read loads and met up with friends. I decreased my ILX posting by around 75%, which is something I should've done ages ago - no offence intended. February is the most magical month of the year. Have fun.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

Is Arizona and New Hampshire still not recognizing MLK day?

az was the last holdout and i think it's a holiday now there.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

january blows. we didn't get MLK day off because our corporate hq is in boston and they take presidents day off instead (why not both? because they are UPTIGHT) and boston is Land of the Presidents, not Land of the Civil Rights Movement. Anyway it's over and february is shorter than other months. So good.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

I saw exactly zero mosquitos. That's got to count for something...
But ahhh yes, February - Let spring training begin and baseball dreams blossom anew.

jim wentworth (wench), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 04:45 (twenty years ago)

It is definitely now a holiday in AZ.
