arial, times new roman, tahoma, and even my former love verdana have absolutely nothing on it.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

It'll run out on you eventually, you'll see. It's cousin Palatino tends to be overlooked.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

Ah, and those non-aligning numerals!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

the non-aligning numerals are my favourite part.

i'll be shocked if this thread generates more than ten responses.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

It is incredibly well balanced. In Your Face Times New Roman.

beanz (beanz), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

I had a brief fling with Georgia, but it's not like it was at first anymore. I'm bored and I'm on the lookout for something new. The fling was too fiery to last, we both knew it.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

The only fault with it is that, at auto leading settings, it looks a bit cramped. You need to set it at 14pt for 10pt type, I think.

got palatino on my mind, and georgia ain't a patch on 'er. nice enough for t'web, but rub at large point sizes

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

One of our clients wanted to send regulatory mailings in comic sans ms. We talked them out of it.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

(wtf!!11 for some reason i have old-style fig version of very weight of palatino, except roman)

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

georgia is a-ok for the web and other small-point jobs.

my favorite cover band, crystal shit (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

palatino's too spacey and aloof, I don't like her.

georgia's nice and comfy. she gets right in there with class to spare.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

Microsoft's best invention? I think maybe.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

Isn't Georgia a Garamond copy?

Me, I loves me some Optima.

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Ew.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

georgia always seemed kinda fake to me, like a disneyland font

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

I'm lovin' me some Apple Garamond lately. I'm such a fanboy.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

if you ask me, the "distance" between georgia and either garamond or palatino is larger than that between garamond and palatino, so it would be hard to say if one was a knock off of one or t'other, as it looks nowt like either when you get down to it.

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

I prefer Palatino's letters, but Georgia's numbers RoXXor my SoXXor

Garamond wins. (It's also my browser font.)

Alan, I kiss you

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

garamond is nice but i find it a little conservative. plus it looks terrible in small type.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

Better on paper than screen

slocki how can you possibly dislike georgia and rep for book antiqua? that's like loving fabolous and hating mase.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

I like AdLib, the squares-in-circles one that somehow resembles Bender from "Futurama."

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

I like Futura far more than I should. Anthony, you might want to check out Avenir. Its got everything you like about Futura, without the silly question mark.

Back on topic, Georgia is probably one of the better things that Microsoft ever did for the web. I'm excited about all the new typefaces they are going to ship with the next version of Windows; hooray for more standard options for web text.

Rhodia (Rhodia), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 01:40 (twenty years ago)

I'm fond of Verdana for screen work, mself. Caslon antique, for those "must look goth" moments. And Stone Sans for bold print headings and such in mag layout work.

All you font-loving boys are givin me the horn here.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 01:50 (twenty years ago)

Georgia reminds me of the penmanship of this girl called M4rg1e Toy from my elementary school.

youn, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 01:59 (twenty years ago)

Personally I find Verdana slightly irritating on the web, especially at larger font sizes, but maybe that's purely through its ubiquity.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 08:48 (twenty years ago)

xpost, of course

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 08:48 (twenty years ago)

Yeah Verdana is a bit cack when it's large... I like using it at a fairly small point size like 10 or even 8, though that can get a bit unreadable at hi res.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 08:54 (twenty years ago)

Verdana was largely usurped by Trebuchet MS at smaller point sizes too, to my eyes.

In fact, most fonts look terrible at the larger sizes (this is partially why I have my browser set to a few zoom levels out).

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 08:57 (twenty years ago)

Stone sans is nice. The serif version is a bit wiggly for me though. (xxxxpost)
Lucida > Verdana > Trebuchet

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 09:29 (twenty years ago)

(Lucida Grande)

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 09:29 (twenty years ago)

I just bought and installed 1,000 new fonts. (MacFonts 2 CD)
It was only £20 so I figured even if there were only a couple of useable ones it would be worth it. In fact there are scores I like.

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

You're all nuts. I don't know what it's like printed out, but I just switched my browser font at work to Georgia and it's pretty hard on the eye. Back to Trebuchet (I'm still on Optima on my Mac at home).

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

I typically use SW Crawl Body. It looks like Arial, but bolded and with a shadow and more professional. It looks like it could be used very well on more elegant and artful album covers.

Ian Riese-Moraine: a casualty of social estrangement. (Eastern Mantra), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

Trebuchet continues to look shit on PC. The horizontal accents on the 'i' etc. ergh

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

GEORGIA!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

The magazine I work on does a complete redesign every year (yeah, I know). This year the main editorial body font is Cushing. Usherwood, from two years ago, looked really good at just about every size.

Truckdrivin' Buddha (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

Best bit of warez I ever got was the entire Adobe Font Folio on CD. Apparently worth 10grand or more!? Anyway it has been very handy.

notTrayce (trayce), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

Century Gothic ruleth the land. My favorite sans serif lately.

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

I find that often the type of font smoothing technology in play (or lack thereof) + the spacing tolerances provided by certain specific apps (cf. Visio vs. Outlook vs. Firefox) has a great deal of effect on what I think looks good on the screen. When I deactivate ClearType on my work PC even Georgia looks right shit. Also there's a readily discernible difference between the attractiveness of serif faces between Acrobat and Word - I suspect all of you can guess which one I consider to be approximately 49,343x better.

georgia, the font

or tahoma

actually, i like georgia too

terry lennox. (gareth), Monday, 12 September 2005 02:11 (twenty years ago)

I'm using Palatino, cause it sounds like Palomino.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 12 September 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

an update: i think a lot of people saw this thread and thought maybe it wouldn't last, but georgia and i are still going strong. it is an absolute pleasure writing in her, especially when i get to use words that have numbers in them, such as "1st" or "4am" or "2pac".

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 12 September 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

Palatino good, esp. in print.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 12 September 2005 08:17 (twenty years ago)

New Century Schoolbook.
Or "Century" to some. It really renders beautifully in .pdf's.

I was liking trebuchet again for a little while but it's come to my attention that it is still trying too hard. I will, however, never get tired of typing "california" all lowercase in trebuchet. It's just that for other words it's too much, I think.

TOMBOT, Monday, 12 September 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:02 (twenty years ago)

how do people feel about Perpetua? Is it a bad idea to use it for CVs etc?

sgs (sgs), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

I think it looks good but maybe a bit feminine and unsubstantial for a CV. But not out of the question by any means. I suppose it depends on the job you're applying for.

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

I really would just use Times for the body text of a CV. Century Gothic or similar for the heading (which would be my name and not CURRICULUM VITAE).

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:18 (twenty years ago)

hmm, interesting... In my CV Times looks ok if bland to me on the screen, but seems to print out poorly with my formatting, and to fit my CV on 2 pages yet keep a 12 pt size I need something slightly smaller hence the perpetua. Maybe I'll play around with it more. (I'm sending this off to ask for work experience.)

sgs (sgs), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

You could try 11pt Calisto if you have it?

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

a modest amount of font-ing on a CV is ok esp if it's for a design job, and if you don't go for something mental. mine's always been Officina serif which is nice and clear, and i've never gone off it

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

11pt Calisto looks good--I'm gonna go with that I think--will let me keep my name in the slightly bigger size too. (thanks Beanz)

sgs (sgs), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

Any time!

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

I just chopped 8 pages worth of resumes down to 3, one sheet for each candidate. I'd like to let you all know that

1. If I'm looking at a softcopy of your resume you can bet I'm going to destroy most of the clever formatting and change the font to whatever the fuck I like, but that doesn't mean I'm going to make some variety of superficial judgement about the way your brain works based on serif vs. sans serif, size of headings, and use of tables everywhere. Design/sales/people-skills jobs are different, I understand.

2. Arial/Helvetica 10 or 11pt looks like shit in most MS Office Suite apps.

3. Large blocks of greyspace in sans serif are hard on the eyeballs. There is a reason that books, for example, are set in serif faces 99.999% of the time.

And this has nothing to do with resumes/CVs but it just reminded me, seriously the RULE in broadcast television et al. is always that bold, sans-serif is by far more readable on low-res displays or large surfaces (as in a projection screen) so when you have to do a Powerpoint presentation, STOP USING FUCKING 12pt TIMES NEW ROMAN and frankly WHY ARE YOU USING LOWERCASE ARRGH. People could learn a lot from CNN.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 05:28 (twenty years ago)

I would like it if the links across the top and bottom of each page were specified as sans-serif, and all the other text serif. Then we could choose what we wanted for each and it would be all proper-like and look nice and smart.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 05:32 (twenty years ago)

I have to agree that bitstream serif looks like assholes.
