"SDSTAFF Dex replies:

From the Greek kydos which entered English as British university slang in the early 1800s. It came to America in the 1920s and 1930s, used frequently by Time magazine. In fact, kudos and tycoon are about the last remnants of the Time-style vocabulary that Henry Luce and his cohorts evolved in the early days of that magazine.

Incidentally, kudos is singular, meaning honour, fame, or glory. If you hear someone say, "I give a kudo to so and so" (Dr. Laura did this the other day)--now that's clueless."

Lingbertt, Monday, 23 May 2005 07:11 (twenty years ago)

GET ONE KUDO

Amon (eman), Monday, 23 May 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

The proper way to offer kudos is part of a morale-building effort and goes like this:

"Kudos to you and your team!"

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 23 May 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

ok, surely some nerd has written a GNU or whatever version of DOS called KU-DOS. please tell me this is true.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 23 May 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Kudos

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

we had a career guidance thing on our computers at school called Kudos. it asked like 2000 dumb questions like "do you prefer the smell of egg, cheese or train stations?", "do you like to travel by car, plane or train?", "what's better? football, hospitals or railways?" then when you were finished it was like "you're going to be a TRAIN DRIVER, DUH."

stupid thing never said to me "you'll end up selling model soldiers, you twit." probably said i'd be an archeologist or something.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 14 July 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

(it was a DOS prog, obv.)

Why does that toaster have a button for not-toasted???

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 19 December 2005 06:01 (twenty years ago)

I think it goes (from top to bottom): completely burnt; not-at-all toasted; lightly toasted; total bread annihilation.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 19 December 2005 06:05 (twenty years ago)

The aqua teen hunger force movie was pretty weak, but I laughed like hell at the "ssttttaaaarr wiiiiipppee" and that was entirely due to Tynan.
So kudos!
