the narrator of Gogglebox is writer of (and actor in) the Royle Family which was a sitcom about people sitting around watching telly and being Northern

Gogglebox is a BAFTA-award winning British observational documentary, which has aired on Channel 4 since 7 March 2013. The show features recurring British couples, families and friends sitting in their living rooms watching weekly British television shows.

I just watched a clip of the poshos trying to discern which fridge something (some kind of booze NO DOUBT) was in: "the one in OUR kitchen! The *big* fridge in our kitchen!"

kinder, Tuesday, 17 June 2014 16:26 (ten years ago) link

That happened (sort of) when they had the people on Gogglebox watching Gogglebox get a BAFTA.

German guy is almost Tuomas-esque at times, if he doesn't understand he just goes "this is not how things are in Germany".

My favourites are the vicar (or more specifically the permanently half out of shot dog and the vicar's religious print skirts), Steph & Dom (the posh drunk couple) and the Indian guy with his sons (who are funny guys).

Best moment this series: Steph is watching Sport Relief and there is the story of an old guy whose wife had Alzheimer's and didn't know who he was before she died. He starts crying and despite fighting it Steph soon is too. Dom consoles her: "That'll be me one day."

Maybe you need the context for some of these, but:

I was getting a little bit tired of it by the end of this series, but still better than most stuff (loved the final scenes: found the acknowledgment of its own success touching, + some Jay)

I'm fascinated by the mechanics of it. The producers must give orders on what to watch, but are the sessions arranged and timed, with tapes? Or are cameras always there? (if so, do they have mad spare footage of eg June actually showing Leon her knicks?)

goole, Tuesday, 17 June 2014 16:35 (ten years ago) link

Steph & Dom have a B&B rather than a giant house. Someone from I think DiS stayed there earlier this year.

The Geordie daughter (Scarlett?) is another favourite - she spent the whole of the Evan Davies show from E1 complaining that the telly was trying to make out that people from the North were thick, then spent the rest of the series demonstrating why people might think that anyone from the North was thick. Watching BGT when she said the magician was "basically Jesus" then refused to accept what he was doing was a trick and not ACTUAL MAGIC was all-time.

The family in the bigger picture above, despite the fact that the father (and therefore the kids) clearly fail Not One Drop are the big UKIP voters in the show, solely for immigration/race reasons.

Also the Steph and Dom chat show isn't about Farage popping in, it's a deliberate act by C4 to give them a programme.

In the last series Steph said about him that he was a horrid racist wanker but despite yourself you could see him being entertaining if you spent the evening with him. That might be the genesis for the show.
