cover songs that mention a band member's name that substitutes the cover band member's name in the lyrics - when/why/how?

is there some linguistic rule that governs when/how this happens?
(I just heard a cover of 'chinese rock' that subs in dee dee's name(!))

The Johnny Thunders version?

heartbreakers' version says "dee dee", ramones version on record says "arty" for arturo vega, their art director/dee dee's roommate.
weird example because it's hard to say who "covered" it - dee dee and richard hell wrote it, but the heartbrreakers recorded their version before the ramones

oh weird on the loco live version, joey says "dee dee"
i just wondered if there was some etiquette about this sort of thing.

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 19 June 2014 22:22 (ten years ago) link

yeah I think they started saying Dee Dee after he stopped playing live with them

if there's an etiquette or pattern to it, you'd have to ask a bunch of dead new york punks what it was exactly

Pretty sure there are cover versions of "Surrender" where the band names change in the final chorus ("Tommy's all right, Robin's all right . . ."). I know for sure the Posies have done it that way.

Disagree. And im not into firey solos chief. (Phil D.), Thursday, 19 June 2014 23:39 (ten years ago) link

euromooks New York City Connection got refused permission to release their cover of Fight For Your Right which included the line "aw mom you're just jealous, it's NYCC." So they honoured the original writers polite way of saying "this is terrible, don't embarrass yourselves lads" by putting it out anyway with "Beastie Boys" back in place.

Yo mean like how Vince Neil sings, "my buddies Sixx, Mick & Tom," in "Smokin' in the Boys' Room"?

R.E.M.'s cover of "Strange" by Wire - Michael's nervous, rather than Joey.

if you sing a karaoke version of surrender, would your natural inclination be to change the final name call to other people in the room?

Not substituting a band member's name, but a similar situation: when Bill Withers covered "Let It Be", he substituted his mother's name in the lyrics ("Mother Mattie comes to me").

I always liked it in History Lesson Pt II when

The song was penned by Watt and, as such, makes specific reference to Boon in the third person ("me and D. Boon, we played for years"). However, when the song was recorded, Boon performed lead vocals and changed the third person references to Watt ("me and Mike Watt, we played for years"). The lyrics, as printed on the cover of Double Nickels on the Dime, contain the original references to Boon despite the difference in the actual recording
