They've all had dreadful, corrupt, violent, authoritarian and repressive governments in the recent past, but a few of them have improved somewhat lately, just a bit. Voted for Uruguay on that basis.

I've been to all but four, the ones I liked best were Colombia and Bolivia.

i love south america, definitely the area i've traveled the most apart from central america. voted peru for rich history, wildly varied landscapes and environments, best cuisine by a long shot - there is really no contest there, overwhelming presence of archeological sites (e.g. machu picchu, saqsayhuaman, choquiquero, ollantaytambo, choquequirao, and those are all inca - just ONE of the dozens and dozens and dozens of rich pre-columbian indigenous cultures), sophisticated weaving and textile practices, and also since my dad was born there.
