In a widely anticipated move, FX has hit the power chord and ordered Denis Leary‘s music comedy Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll to series. The deal just finalized is for 10 episodes to air sometime in 2015 and reunites Leary with the cable network three years after their series Rescue Me ended its seven-season run.

Created, written by and starring Leary, Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll centers on Johnny Rock, played by Leary. The lead singer of NYC’s legendary early-’90s band The Heathens, Rock is is trying to get the both his band and his life back together. John Corbett co-stars along with Elizabeth Gillies, Bobby Kelly and Elaine Hendrix. Leary and partner Jim Serpico are executive producing through their Apostle banner. It is produced by FX Productions and Fox Television Studios and will be filmed on location in New York City, with the plan to feature original music and occasional guest appearances by actual rock stars.

D Generation did open for a lot of big bands so this is not necessarily going to be as anachronistic as it sounds

Unless they pretend this D Generation surrogate was "huge" in the early '90s

Johnny Rock of The Heathens might be the laziest fictional rock star name of all time.

FYI, John Corbett's character, the Richie Sambora of the group, is named Flash.

Denis Leary has a number of guest rock stars appearing in his new FX comic Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll, which premieres July 16. Lined up are Joan Jett, Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and Greg Dulli of Afghan Whigs. But if his series gets a second season, Leary wants David Bowie on the show.

“My three favorite bands are the (Rolling) Stones, the Who and David Bowie,” Leary told the Comic-Con Hall H crowd during the Sex&Drugs panel Sunday. “I grew up in the ’70s when there was shitty music. The songwriters and the musicians were falling asleep, and there were stupid haircuts. Bowie got me through 1970 until the Ramones showed up. He’s funny; I’ve seen him on Ricky Gervais’ show. That’s my message to David Bowie.” Bowie also was Leary’s nickname on the FX show Rescue Me.

also learned in Hall H. The rhythm section is named Rehab and Bam Bam. Johnny Rock, Flash, Rehab and Bam Bam.

lol if Hannibal couldn't entice Bowie, you probably can't either, Denis.

This is why networks should not accept, sight unseen, the second offering from someone who has previously delivered a hit show (see: The Marriage Ref.

trying to imagine david bowie wanting to read lines by someone who thinks he was the only good musical act from 1970-1976

da croupier, Monday, 13 July 2015 18:06 (nine years ago) link

this was so much worse than even I could have anticipated

there were a couple touches i appreciate (the Shane McGowan joke, the riff on tribute bands) and i like that they made the daughter a semi-interesting character and not just a foil for leary's lame antics but yeah, pretty stupid show.

this looked hella dumb from jump and I'm more of a Leary fan than many folks I know (I ride and die for a few seasons of rescue me and am like "eeehhhh, about that" re the rest)

will check it out but expecting little and racing for disappointment

the only real upside is that a few people might learn who Greg Dulli is

but really everyone would be 1000x better served by listening to Afghan Whigs records while reading Noel Gallagher interviews

Did the first episode address the fact that Denis Leary and John Corbett (especially Leary) are a little old to be playing dudes from an early '90s band?

JRN, Friday, 17 July 2015 06:03 (nine years ago) link

plus they looked more like a New York Dolls-y glam band than early '90s in the commercials I saw.

one of the more semi-clever touches was that the photos of Johnny Rock in his prime were all stills from Leary's old MTV bits, which conjured the odd "oh yeah, this guy was on MTV in the early '90s" realization. Northern Exposure was out in the early 90s, it's plausible those guys would've broken through as musicians at the same age they got famous IRL as actors/comedians.

some dude, Friday, 17 July 2015 06:25 (nine years ago) link

thought this was not bad
