Should California become six separate states?

Silicon Valley venture capitalist Tim Draper submitted signatures yesterday to create a measure that would split California in six separate states. What should the states be called? Where should the boundaries be drawn? Is six states enough? Too much? What is a state, anyway? Where am I? Should I go out of state for the weekend? That could take as little as ten minutes! I love it!

Yes because then Texas might feel compelled to break into the five or so everyone always says we have the right to, and then I'd live someplace else without having to move.

12 senators for Cali, ten for Texas; sounds great

lol west california

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Wednesday, 16 July 2014 19:31 (ten years ago)

west california, naturally, is not the westernmost part of the state

polyphonic, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 19:32 (ten years ago)

Xxp some of those TX senators would likely not be ridiculous right wing but jobs assuming that population centers like Dallas, Austin, and Houston were apportioned to separate states.

building a desert (art), Wednesday, 16 July 2014 19:33 (ten years ago)

and north california is south of "Jefferson" xp

Treeship, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 19:34 (ten years ago)

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 19:39 (ten years ago)

At first I was opposed, but then this changed my mind:

pplains, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 19:39 (ten years ago)

california is kind of the america of america, so it should really be 50 states within a state

iatee, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 19:40 (ten years ago)

and then LA can be 50 counties

iatee, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 19:40 (ten years ago)

i disapprove more on the idea of having a state named 'silicon valley' than on the actual sociopolitical ramifications

ciderpress, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 19:40 (ten years ago)

that's like naming your country douchebagistan

j., Wednesday, 16 July 2014 19:42 (ten years ago)

What would the state capitals be? What would the state birds be?

polyphonic, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 19:42 (ten years ago)

silicon valley's would be the twitter bird obviously

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 19:43 (ten years ago)

Wrong it should be the parrots of Telegraph Hill

polyphonic, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 19:44 (ten years ago)

silicon valley's capital would be the google building and its state bird would be a drone

iatee, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 19:45 (ten years ago)

I am in also in support of this proposal:

how much of central california would be, like, mountains and desert

and is that why it is red

a: yes

dude (Lamp), Wednesday, 16 July 2014 19:53 (ten years ago)

if they let california get a bunch of senators then maybe every other state will follow to aggressively collect senators, and states will just become smaller and smaller until every person is their own state and is a senator

iatee, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 19:55 (ten years ago)

or two senators really

iatee, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 19:55 (ten years ago)

If a minority in such case will secede rather than acquiesce, they make a precedent which in turn will divide and ruin them, for a minority of their own will secede from them whenever a majority refuses to be controlled by such minority. For instance, why may not any portion of a new confederacy a year or two hence arbitrarily secede again, precisely as portions of the present Union now claim to secede from it? All who cherish disunion sentiments are now being educated to the exact temper of doing this.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Wednesday, 16 July 2014 20:07 (ten years ago)

agree this is dumb

the late great, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 20:57 (ten years ago)

though I wouldn't mind seceding from the union!

I'm entertained that Jefferson and Silicon Valley are the only two named states which shows where the support is coming from.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Thursday, 17 July 2014 00:03 (ten years ago)

I'd support Missibama statehood to make room for other state crackups, as long as the senators are whittled from 4 to 2 via the octagon.

The State of Jefferson was first floated about 1940, iirc. Then WWII came along and squashed the idea but good.

Silicon Valley should be renamed Tech Overlordia, be a seperate country altogether and as citizens of other nations we should sacrifice animals on the altar and thank them for the technology they bring us everyday.

"It will simply divide the state into smaller, more manageable populations. Think of North Carolina and South Carolina; North Dakota and South Dakota; West Virginia and Virginia"

oh, ok i get it now. thanks.

mizzell, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 20:25 (six years ago)

so this is just a scam to try and get more Republican congress members, yeah?

sleeve, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 20:28 (six years ago)

this will never happen, so many legal and political hurdles

totally stupid, obviously, as it would dilute the state's political power

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 20:31 (six years ago)

xp
Seems like the balance would not change, as two of the new states would be solidly Dem. I wonder if even the "So Cal" state would be red, with San Diego county (57% HRC, 37% DJT) being the main population center.

nickn, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 20:32 (six years ago)

I'm still stuck on the idea of a state ballot measure making federal-level changes, how does that even work?

sleeve, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 20:33 (six years ago)

it has to be ratified by Congress

mizzell, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 20:35 (six years ago)

among other things

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 20:36 (six years ago)

Article 4, Section 3:

New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new States shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress.

The Dem legislature and the Dem governor in CA will *never* cede power to some new GOP-base upstart state.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 20:39 (six years ago)

didn't get the bolding right there but you get the idea

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 20:40 (six years ago)

West Virginia was sly.

While all the "real Virginians" were out of the Union, running the government of their Confederate state, the mountain folk wandered down from the hills, told the Fed that they were now the Union government for the commonwealth, and promptly ceded power to the upstart West counties to become a new state.
