Your favorite cocktails - a reference thread for the newish bartender
in the 2k10 i am learning to make cocktails. this is my mixology thread
aside from basic spirits I recommend some bitters, maraschino, orange liqueur, and good vermouth

I keep a bottle of decent white and decent red in case a wine drinker come over, other than that I have two lonely bottles of Rittenhouse Rye and Jameson that never get touched because I don't drink much at home.

if you want nice tequila - Tipatio is really wonderful and affordable (~$30). and Forteleza is my new fave premium (~40-50) so smooth it's like it's not there except for flavor which drules

i mean nothing is essential in and of itself so the question is what are your goals in re: the inventory of booze in your home?

As everyone else says, it depends on your taste and your audience. I don't care that much about wine so most of what I have is bottles that other people have brought and they move slowly. Sometimes I have good beer in stock and sometimes I've drunk it all. Couple of decent whiskies. A larger than average collection of fernets. Lots of bitters. For someone else, this might be a completely dysfunctional cabinet but it serves my purposes.

"Least essential drinks in the cabinet" would also be a thread imo. I have a 1-litre bottle of Amaro Montenegro that isn't going anywhere soon.

i basically have about 10 bourbons, a rye, a scotch, and a rum

I need vodka, gin, single malt scotch, St. Germain (only a drop or two of which I use at a time so the bottle will outlive me). I also keep rum, Cointreau, Jim Beam for the curious. Red wine is essential, but I don't consider it part of the bar. No white wine. Beer only on request or in anticipation of a visit.

Currently maintain various reds and whites, gin and tonic water. Lately thanks to my girlfriend, bitters, vermouth and rye are also on hand for manhattans. Beer only happens sporadically.

without Cointreau you've lost before the game even starts imo

St. Germain (only a drop or two of which I use at a time so the bottle will outlive me)
I was happy to discover that a 375 ml size of this exists.

I know people hate white wine now but Chardonnay is great

also this is pretty much all special occassion/friends over type thing. i love whiskey but i rarely drink it more than once a month, if that.
beer is always in the fridge and that's what i regularly drink. my wife drinks a little wine so we usually have some red and white. if i didn't buy it for her she wouldn't drink it though.

White wine is my lunch wine. I can't have it for dinner, alas.

also i didn't know people hated white wine. is it like that thing from 'sideways' when everyone shits on merlot for a year or two and then forgets about the fad?
― marcos, Monday, 21 July 2014 15:12 (ten years ago)
It is probably just a fad, and I may have overstated it. Everyone still hates merlot, though.

Most of the wineries near me offer 'reds only' club memberships with no 'white wines only' option

booze doesn't last long enough in our house to become a "collection".
