I really loved that Vivian Maier doc, but found the guy who "found" her a real irritating prick.
― xelab, Wednesday, 23 July 2014 22:39 (ten years ago)
I agree with that--I was happy that he wasn't around much after the first 20 minutes (or at least not in front of the camera as much).

I like the look of The Rover, Ilo Ilo and Policeman but Dom Hemingway looks like it is deservedly unloved. Only seen the trailer like, but it looked like standard faux cockney-thug type drivel.

Just watched that Force Majeure earlier, thought it was brilliant, always get the bearded guy who plays Mats mixed up with Rafe Spall. I think earlier in this year I voted A Touch Of Sin, The Immigrant and Under The Skin and have not seen anything new to usurp any of these yet.

― touch of a love-starved cobra (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 3 January 2015 14:28 (ten years ago)
Yeah, for me as well. Nothing like Stray Dogs or Closed Curtain, both of whom I consider 2013. Perhaps Goodbye to Language or From What is Before or Lil Quinquin, which I'll hopefully see in 2015.
― Frederik B, Saturday, 3 January 2015 14:31 (ten years ago)
Stray Dogs was an outright disappointment to me, Closed Curtain a good variation on the preceding, better Panahi work.
― touch of a love-starved cobra (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 3 January 2015 14:50 (ten years ago)
Without seeing Stray Dogs or esp (as it seems to have been screened in London) Goodbye to Language I am not sure I can vote on any ILX best films of '14 poll :-(
All of my faves weren't as good as seeing catching some of the oldies for the first time by Akerman, Ozu and Hou. xp
― xyzzzz__, Saturday, 3 January 2015 14:52 (ten years ago)
btw a friend just posted on FB that The Imitation Game is the summit of filmmaking for him. Should I or shouldn't I?

we don't like that round 'ere I tells ya!
― xyzzzz__, Saturday, 3 January 2015 16:03 (ten years ago)
I just go by world premiere. And we hardly get to see everything first, just a lot of European/Asian fare. So stuff like Hard to be a God or Closed Curtain, but on the other hand we have to wait for stuff like Imitation Game and Unbroken, so it's about equal.
And more annoyingly, hardly anything ever gets actual premieres here. Hard to be a God just showed a single time back in april, on a friday afternoon, at the festival. Packed audience, though. Fun experience. Later that evening I saw Stranger by the Lake, then went drinking, then next morning saw Norte, pretty hungover. Good times.
― Frederik B, Saturday, 3 January 2015 16:09 (ten years ago)
Frederik the Danish tourist board should just give you a job (if you don't already work there). It does all sound v good!
― xyzzzz__, Saturday, 3 January 2015 16:59 (ten years ago)
Stranger by the Lake would be my Great movie of this year--since many critics are counting it as a '14 film, I will as well. Liked Boyhood a lot without being over the moon about it, but compared to the looks of this year's Oscar-bait, I sure won't begrudge it any awards. Would be completely in favour of a Supporting Actor win for Hawke, in fact.
