The adaptation of the Sarah Waters novel about a Victorian lesbian affair which started on BBC2 last night. If you saw it, what did you reckon?

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 10 October 2002 09:14 (twenty-three years ago)

They're doing this here:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/reviews/2312943.stm

but not as well, obv. I haven't seen it, but PHWOOAR! anyway.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 10 October 2002 09:24 (twenty-three years ago)

damn i missed it!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 10 October 2002 09:52 (twenty-three years ago)

and here was me thinking this was another euphemism thread. tipping the velvet.... yeah!!

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 10 October 2002 09:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw an itsy bitsy (?!?) of it. Fell asleep. I was, however, appalled at that re-style program. Two complete stuck-up DIMWITS being VERY rude (using words as SHAG!, ARSE and BOOBS on telly!) to a very sweet woman who felt VERY uncomfortable...

nathalie (nathalie), Thursday, 10 October 2002 09:59 (twenty-three years ago)

well nath that was pretty much how "Tipping the Velvet" went as well hah! ;-) only with guardsmen's uniforms and Duggie out of Coronation Street.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 10 October 2002 10:02 (twenty-three years ago)

The photo on the BBC site has a bit of a Robert Palmer feel to it.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 10 October 2002 10:04 (twenty-three years ago)

and here was me thinking this was another euphemism thread. tipping the velvet.... yeah!!

'tipping the velvet' was, apparently, a genuine victorian euphemism for 'carpet munching'.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 10 October 2002 10:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I really don't like these abstract/watch the show!/meaningless titles. Severely. I'll watch it if/when it gets down here though, why not.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 10 October 2002 10:06 (twenty-three years ago)

and here was me thinking i was clever and/or funny!

what an asshole!

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 10 October 2002 10:06 (twenty-three years ago)

They should have called it that, "Carpet Munching".

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 10 October 2002 10:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, that would have been better.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 10 October 2002 10:11 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, i might've watch it then.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 10 October 2002 10:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Hate Trinny and Sussanah and you hate me, Nathalie.

(actually, they are quite rude, but that's the point I think)

Graham (graham), Thursday, 10 October 2002 10:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham, you are running on a high-risk strategy here.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 10 October 2002 10:31 (twenty-three years ago)

they are pretty annoying. which dotcom were they behind? i remember their faces being on posters on the tube 2 yrs ago for some clothing website

michael (michael), Thursday, 10 October 2002 11:22 (twenty-three years ago)

ready2shop.com ha ha

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 10 October 2002 11:26 (twenty-three years ago)

they are the ultimate in rude, idiotic upper class twits, I despise them. And they don't particularly dress that well themselves, the fuckwads.

chris (chris), Thursday, 10 October 2002 12:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Did the movie have the strap-on scene?

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 10 October 2002 14:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Susannah used to be the assistant of my friend Karen (posher than T&S put together), and is a dimwit according to K.

Haven't seen t the v, no telly until later.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 10 October 2002 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

But Chris, that is the joy of the programme, as a fat ugly nerd with no dress sense I would be unable to watch if not for the happiness I get when T or S appears wearing a tea-cosy hat and 27 shirts of different lengths. And also for contestants who say things like, "Everyone else in Romford wears these, why can't I?" (No offence DG, I only found it so amusing because I was imagining that you'd find it misguided as was and because I was mentally substituting places I've lived in)

I haven't seen Tipping the Velvet either, but the trailers annoyed me. Maybe I mean *because* the trailers annoyed me, but also because I was too lazy, don't watch much TV any more, and never bothered to notice when it was on.

Rebecca (reb), Thursday, 10 October 2002 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I so rarely get into a TV watching routine disciplined (ha!) enough to watch drama series. The last one I managed it for was 24, and then I missed the last three episodes. I was keen on TTV in a mildly prurient way until I realised I didn't fancy the women in the Radio Times spread at all.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 10 October 2002 17:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I only saw a few minutes of it, but I was surprised to see Eliza Doolittle as the main charecter.
Sapphic seductress: "how about we go backstage for a bit of carpet munching?"
Eliza: "Oim a good gurl, oi am, an' no mistake!"

DavidM (DavidM), Thursday, 10 October 2002 17:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I was watching house on doctor on video.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 10 October 2002 17:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I wish I'd seen T the V. I don't know the other programme you're all on about.

the pinefox, Thursday, 10 October 2002 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

i was watching "where the boys aren't" on video.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 11 October 2002 07:46 (twenty-three years ago)

What the Pinefox said.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 11 October 2002 08:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I was watching Faking It and wondering why my director didn't have to choose camera's for me when they let me loose on the Vision Mixer with no instruction.

Graham (graham), Friday, 11 October 2002 08:15 (twenty-three years ago)

> I was surprised to see Eliza Doolittle as the main charecter.

that is actually diana rigg's daughter.

did anyone else groan at the oyster references? or i have read too much anais nin?

andy

koogs, Friday, 11 October 2002 08:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes I groaned at that too. Diana Rigg's daughter does indeed uncannily resemble her - maybe with a touch of Ellix-Bextor? But that vaudeville act was dismal and would never have got anywhere near a stage even then; sort of a sub-Sackville West concept of "music hall" rather than the real thing.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 11 October 2002 09:13 (twenty-three years ago)

She kept reminding me of [aargh, what's her name, Eastenders, Tiffany, arrgh, why isn't this comi...] Martine McCutcheon, although her accent wasn't as convincing. Having never experienced Victorian music hall, I can't say if Marcello's comment is fair.

I enjoyed it, though - I suspect this may be more because I seldom bother watching drama for the reasons N. mentioned, so when I do I appreciate it more (cf. theatre, cinema, anything that involves leaving the 'ouse). Keeley Hawes was a bit tasty; it looked nice; and the plot is developing nicely in a predictable, not-too-challenging potboiler kind of way. Good to watch with friends, too, especially if you can have a bit of a roll around with them :)

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 11 October 2002 12:42 (twenty-three years ago)

They promised the most explicit sex scenes ever on TV, and I felt cheated. It struck me as another skillful adaptation, though probably of something not much worth reading or adapting.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 11 October 2002 20:13 (twenty-three years ago)

read today that raunchier stuff is promised for the next episode.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 13 October 2002 18:46 (twenty-three years ago)

haha that means I have to keep watching!
