Not sure Collateral fits what I'm looking for - think it's too literal

There's a sense of unreleased tension, or perhaps release into bathos, that I think these movies also share

Claire Denis's Friday Night, maybe, although unlike AH/EWS, the protagonist isn't punished for her desires.

Into The Night a more normal '80s-date-night-adventure flick, you don't get the existential dread along with it

Blue Velvet, maybe, although the opening sequence is a small masterpiece of daylight horror?

After Hours is like my favourite movie ever (and Eyes Wide Shut is pretty great too)
