jesus

Come and Heave a Ho (darraghmac), Wednesday, 13 August 2014 21:13 (ten years ago)

I pick Wiest. Fun fact: Wiest and Sorvino the only back to back acting winners directed by same guy.

Runners-up: Ruehl (category fraud), Paquin, Binoche maybe.

man poor Sorvino, defining this category for the next decade.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 August 2014 21:20 (ten years ago)

That's subjectively narrowed down from the nominations for the whole decade? There must have been better choices than that.

clemenza, Wednesday, 13 August 2014 21:23 (ten years ago)

they're the winners, no?

Come and Heave a Ho (darraghmac), Wednesday, 13 August 2014 21:24 (ten years ago)

Sorry, now I get it.

clemenza, Wednesday, 13 August 2014 21:25 (ten years ago)

marisa tomei is really good in MCV, the only thing I remember beyond Fred gwynne. Binoche was great and TEP is actually good imo. Dench win was embarrassing if only bc of actual screen time. Basinger was just flat. Idk.

Binoche I suppose.

Basinger lucked out that year, riding the wave of Oscar guilt over having to give something to the critical favourite.

Best Allen-directed performance of the decade was Judy Davis in Husbands and Wives (nominated).

I haven't seen Tomei (who i almost always like) or Jolie. wd vote Wiest.

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 13 August 2014 21:32 (ten years ago)

Wiest - the rest of these are appalling

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 13 August 2014 21:33 (ten years ago)

hate Basinger in L.A. Confidential so much

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 13 August 2014 21:33 (ten years ago)

Tomei's great in MCV, one of the last good, solid studio comedies before the Carrey/Sandler deluge.

Best Allen-directed performance ever.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 August 2014 21:38 (ten years ago)

although i probably like Wiest's role just as much, voting for Sorvino because she was the butt of so many obnoxious jokes about her award being undeserved when it stands up now as a highlight of a pretty solid career

some dude, Wednesday, 13 August 2014 21:38 (ten years ago)

Tomei got it just as bad. There were rumors for years that Jack Palance read her name twice by accident.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 August 2014 21:40 (ten years ago)

sorvino was good in that one yeah, and i do love those 'where are they now' pieces i see which sometimes feature her, i always thought she was at least reasonably good in everything i saw her in.

LIKE If you are against racism (omar little), Wednesday, 13 August 2014 21:40 (ten years ago)

are you sure you don't mean Tomei, ship? Has Sorvino had a solid career?

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 August 2014 21:40 (ten years ago)

i rep for m-sorv in 'romy and michelle' and 'summer of sam' and 'mimic'

I was gonna say Barcelona.

Quick: which of these actresses have gotten other nominations?

tomei, wiest, binoche, dench?

In honor of Sorvino's role as Dr. Susan Tyler, an entomologist who was investigating deadly insect mutations in the feature film Mimic, a compound excreted by the sunburst diving beetle as a defensive mechanism was named "mirasorvone" by Thomas Eisner.

yep

1999 was the only year I had to look up: I mean wtf at her win. That's one of the more solid list of nominees.

Toni Collette
Chloe Sevigny
Catherine Keener
Samantha Morton

Sorvino never got the late 90s/early 00s role she probably deserved

lol i actually got mixed up in my brain and was thinking of Tomei when i said Sorvino, although i guess it's true of Sorvino too. definitely prefer My Cousin Vinny to Mighty Aphrodite.

Mercedes Ruehl should've gotten a Best Actress nod so yeah.

I'd have voted:

Whoopi Goldberg - Ghost
Juliette Lewis - Cape Fear
Judy Davis - Husbands and Wives
Anna Paquin - The Piano
Dianne Wiest - Bullets Over Broadway
Mare Winningham - Georgia
really, anyone but Bacall could get it
Julianne Moore - Boogie Nights
Rachel Griffiths - Hilary and Jackie
Chloë Sevigny - Boys Don't Cry or Catherine Keener - Being John Malkovich
