what names have you just never really cared for?

does it have anything to do with a bad one you met, or had a particularly bad experience with?

or do you think it's just something about… the name… somehow…

j., Thursday, 14 August 2014 18:54 (ten years ago)

there was this kid derek. what a clod.

i've liked some georges but it nevertheless arouses suspicion

Merdeyeux, Thursday, 14 August 2014 19:27 (ten years ago)

in my experience, matts are generally featureless and have to work against that somehow to really distinguish themselves in any way, good or bad. i had a best friend who was a matt, but he had nordic ancestry and very very pale skin and blonde hair. i believe there were several matts in my school when i was young. they tended to go by last initials, matt p, matt s, that kind of thing. as if that helped.

i just realized i am posting this after a matt p post, oh well. your legendary wrath more than distinguishes you from your counterparts in my mind.

1980-1985 was ridiculous for matts, my father is nothing if not a guy who wants to fit in, and my mother probably had a dream involving one of her angels who said something about 'matthew' so

yknow what i pin my aversion to 'george' solely on myself. for me saying it requires some mild contortion of the mouth that i'm not entirely comfortable with, but maybe others don't have the same thing

Merdeyeux, Thursday, 14 August 2014 19:49 (ten years ago)

Mildred and Bertha. Both of which were inflicted upon my great grandmother. I know they're very "of their time", but it's hard for me to imagine either of them ever sounding particularly mellifluous.

The Ape In The Outhouse (Old Lunch), Thursday, 14 August 2014 19:51 (ten years ago)

Also dislike George, Josh, Joe. They just sound kinda mealy-mouthed (also super negative experience with a George.) Actually I did meet a Josh who was super-cool, but he was actually a Joaquin. Joes can die in a fire (ex boyfriend thing haha) and while we're slagging off exes, I've never met a Paul who wasn't a dick. All Pauls are evil. It is the way of things.

I'm gonna be cap'n save-a-Julian coz all the Julians I've known have been lovely (and of course Julian Cope).

Jack is WAY more popular as a given name in the UK then it is in the US. These days, at least. Lots of little kids named Jack.

jaymc, Friday, 15 August 2014 14:20 (ten years ago)

Let's all offer the caveat here that any ordinary name one of us doesn't like is also going to be the name of a fellow ILXor or their awesome brother or their best friend from elementary.

No personal offense should be taken.

I don't like three of my four names, the surname being the only one I'm fine with.

pplains, Friday, 15 August 2014 14:29 (ten years ago)

yeah jack has been the most popular boy's name for years n years. but i think we're only now getting to the point where we're getting an influx of jacks who are ostensibly adults.

Merdeyeux, Friday, 15 August 2014 14:30 (ten years ago)

When I was a kid, I wanted my name to be Jack. I don't know why.

You know something? He *did* say "well, yeah" a lot. (cryptosicko), Friday, 15 August 2014 14:32 (ten years ago)

My grandfather was nicknamed Jack to distinguish from his father, who was also John. My dad was John III, but was always called Michael/Mike (and eventually changed it officially). On my dad's side, there are a lot of Johns and Marys who used their middle names day-to-day, pretty much dating back to the 17th century, on both sides. On my mother's side, lots of Annes and Elizabeths (and the records don't go quite so far back, because they're working-class Swedes and Poles rather than eternally literate Huguenots and Norn Irish doctors).

feels like too much work to keep straight who prefers Jen, Jenny, Jenna, or the full Jennifer.

I will happily answer to any of these although IME "Jenna" is usually it's own name rather than a nickname for Jennifer. I get irrationally annoyed when people address me in writing as "Jenn" however.

My contribution to this thread: Cheryl

carl agatha, Saturday, 16 August 2014 16:51 (ten years ago)

These are all irrational hatreds below:

FRANK - Weird, right? It's a man's man name. FDR. Frank's Wild Years. Just not big on the sound it makes in my mouth. I also don't like Frankie. Fran's ok, though.

My grandmother's name was Frances. Her third husband was a Frank. He was a nice guy, but I feel like I never really got to know the guy because of all that name business.

JOSH/JERRY - I've got best friends with these names, but no. Agree with the wet sneaker/Josh. Not sure why I'm not big on Jerry since I'm ok with Jimmy or Johnny. Maybe because it rhymes with a food, which could also lead the way to why I don't like Frank.

PAT - Love Patrick. It's my abandoned baptismal name. Don't like Pat, and not just because of the "lol @ transgendered people" connotation it has now. Maybe because it's a verb, a very PATronizing verb at that.

HEATH - I'm really starting to convince myself this food thing is real. Not a fan of Chuck either.

pplains, Saturday, 16 August 2014 17:30 (ten years ago)

I'm also not a big fan the name I go by IRL, Tre.

First, it's basically my dad naming me Pleasant P. Plains Jr. Jr.

Second, the long-A sound it makes is pretty much the most common sound heard here in the Western World. When the barista asks for my name, I tell her anything but my name (Josh would be pretty good, now that I think of it) because hearing someone calling out from across the room 'AY? will go right past my hearing radar.

Third <--- see what I did there - it's spelled too many different ways. Trey is the most common, which is a dog's jaw. Then there's my spelling, Tre. My dad insists on accenting it like Tré, which doesn't seem right. My newspaper quoted a lawyer recently who said his name was Tre', with the accent coming after the 'e', which is despicable. Then there are the guys named Tres or Trae, and the whole world wants to spell it Tray in the first place. Such a tiny name and all this trouble.

When my grandfather died, my name appeared in his obituary as Pleasant "Tré" Plains III. Mother of God, I'm still pissed off about that.

pplains, Saturday, 16 August 2014 17:38 (ten years ago)

I know a couple of guys named François who prefer Frank and I thought lol you crazy, but I guess when your name is that common...

Pat is my bf's preferred name and it works for him but he's a guy. I usually call him Pats. My mom and a couple of our friends call him Patty which I hate.

Oliver/Ollie are beautiful names.

second "matt" from the discussion above. i don't know why this name was so popular in the early 80s. in one group of friends i hung out with there were 4 other matts for a total of 5 matts. there were so many other matts around i grew up being called either by my last name or a nickname, so i barely register it as my first name.

Toby

I have a really strong aversion to this name for no good reason, I don't even know anyone with it. I always picture all Tobys as the kid who gets picked on all the time but you secretly feel he kind of deserves it. I really also dislike the name "Brock" because I picture him as the kid who always picks on the other kids.
