Years ago, I was on the Tube with a load of my drunken work colleagues. There was a passenger reading a copy of 'Crime & Punishment', so I said "I used to be a fan of 'The Idiot' until I met these guys!".

No fucking middle names. Best thing about my name, really - eleven letters, each vowel once, no bullshit. (Google zing in 3...2...)

That's not a way to look smarter, I just think it's tidier and less elitist-coding that way

Man, people think I'm ~sooooo~ much more intellectual since I bearded up.

One way to look smarter would clearly be declining to engage with The Atlantic, though

back when most people threshed wheat in the fields or scrubbed floors with one of those big disney movie scrub buckets, you didn't need to see shit unless you were a monk copying manuscripts or whatever

poorly-focused vision also autocorrects to an extent in the absence of corrective eyewear

are you saying Big Glasses has just been selling us a line all these years

j., Friday, 15 August 2014 20:37 (ten years ago)

lol

it's only to an extent. modern man demands 20/20, and the market can deliver this (it can also pick up when your prescription fluctuates due to not having to correct any more, and sell you replacements)

difficult listening hour, Saturday, 16 August 2014 21:13 (ten years ago)

i knew a girl who was reading a biography of dostoevsky in a coffeeshop who was told condescendingly by a british person (trying to pull) that dostoevsky was for pseudo-intellectuals

friend of mine reported this exact interaction (sans britishness) over the copy of pale fire she borrowed from me the other day. (the gentleman had "taken a lit class" where everyone had "pretended to understand".) i guess this is just what girls have to live with day-to-day cuz she seemed amused whereas i was like violently enraged by proxy.

difficult listening hour, Saturday, 16 August 2014 21:18 (ten years ago)

n.b. the girl did go out with him, so.

A while ago I was going back on a Friday night (train was full) and this girl seemed to be reading something Dan Brown-like (something that sold by the truckload I can't recall so much, having had a few and unable to ignore this 'interaction' by reading myself) and the guy (clearly trying to pull) was saying how it wasn't well written and how she should read [insert whatever your 'good writing' recommends are here]. She didn't violently tell him where to go or anything..
