Yes but I'm between contracts so it possibly doesn't count.

i have been off work for a week but have not had a planned week-long vacation

cross over the mushroom circle (La Lechera), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 19:21 (ten years ago)

I have thirty days of holiday a year and I haven't taken any of them in 2014. I'm contractually obliged to take two consecutive weeks every year but can't remember the last time I did.

Wristy Hurlington (ShariVari), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 19:22 (ten years ago)

Yes, but unpaid. My first week-long vacation since 2010.

i never understand people who accrue vacation time without using it

marcos, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 19:27 (ten years ago)

i have generous (for the US) vacation time, 20 days a year (federal holidays are already granted and are not part of the 20 days), and i find it difficult to stay within my 20 days

marcos, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 19:28 (ten years ago)

Nope, although I have taken 4 days straight twice. It's been mostly a financial thing - too many other expenses to actually fly and stay somewhere far away, so we're doing shorter local trips instead (aside from family visits). I do have generous paid vacation time though.

'arry Goldman (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 19:29 (ten years ago)

I'm physically on holiday for the next nearly-two-weeks, but I am working, so I guess the answer must be 'no'. Certainly feels like a vacation though! *dons shades*

took seven months off from late June to January, a week in May, and another five weeks from mid-September

I'd accrued a lot.

boney tassel (sic), Wednesday, 20 August 2014 01:05 (ten years ago)

I assumed you had just quit your job. accrual at my job maxes out at 4 weeks.

Anyway, yes for me, though really being away from my house for a week always leaves me antsy by halfway through. My vacation last month I took three days off and stayed home with my friend who visited.

Lack of "I'm unemployed" option makes this poll feel... I dunno... UnAmerican?

Shugazi (Branwell with an N), Wednesday, 20 August 2014 15:51 (ten years ago)

I get generous vacation and sick leave but wind up using about a week a year? I also work in a small office: my boss and I are the only full timers. I can probably take a week off without worry -- that's what summer is for -- but, yeah, guilt stops me from doing it. I'm off today, for example, and that's what winds up happening: a day off here or there.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 20 August 2014 16:03 (ten years ago)

ito actual days off ehhh

28 basic then obv the 9 bank holidays and then there's the flexi days I get to work up and take monthly so that's 49 total in the year.

which is yknow nice

duff paddy (darraghmac), Wednesday, 20 August 2014 16:05 (ten years ago)

just can't afford to go anywhere on the actual wages is all

duff paddy (darraghmac), Wednesday, 20 August 2014 16:06 (ten years ago)

yes - i took about five weeks off from late april to the beginning of june. i also took 16 days off last june to go to barcelona. i also get a week off btw xmas and new years but i didnt go anywhere

otoh i check my email and work phone multiple times a day whenever im on vacation and usually end up spending some time each day doing 'work stuff' but it seems a reasonable trade-off for the flexibility i have

so fucking jealous man

i need to take more weekend trips!

example (crüt), Wednesday, 20 August 2014 16:41 (ten years ago)

i get 25 + the bank holidays, i use all of it every year because my job doesnt let me save it up (seems like this is standard in the UK?)

just sayin, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 16:46 (ten years ago)

I don't take it for granted, that and the flexitime are worth anything the private sector are gonna throw at me wage-wise anytime soon

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

When I worked in an academic library I'd usually save up my vacation time and take a pretty long vacation in the summer, I think once I was gone for 30 days which felt pretty luxurious.

I finished grad school in May and have been technically unemployed since, though I start a faculty job tomorrow meaning I'll be on a 9 month academic schedule for the foreseeable future, meaning from mid May until mid August I'll have no official obligations. Which tbh is one of the major factors for going to grad school in the first place.

joygoat, Monday, 25 August 2014 00:10 (ten years ago)

no, but i usually do, it just didn't happen this year

call all destroyer, Monday, 25 August 2014 00:12 (ten years ago)

I assume this is a bit different in the US than in Europe? Here in Finland 5 or 6 weeks of vacation per year is the norm if you have a regular full-time job. And in many workplaces (like mine) you can't refuse to use those vacation days even if you wanted to; they can't be exchanged to a salary increase or anything. Most Finns with a full-time job have a month long vacation in the summer, and use the rest of their vacation days in Christmas etc.

Tuomas, Monday, 25 August 2014 09:19 (ten years ago)

Fuck y'all, I get something like 10 days a year

DERE is no DERE DERE (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 25 August 2014 09:22 (ten years ago)

most Americans get two months of vacation a year, but since Bush's "trade vacation for SUVs" many started forgoing those days. now that gas costs $100 a gallon people have been trading in their days under Obama's "trade vacation for guns" plan so it's all working out
