so my pal bill was heard to remark on national television a few days back: "the ugliest women in the world must be muslim, since they have to cover themselves up under veils."

what a hoot!

the local seattle morning show told me to take this with a grain of salt however, since "muslims arent particularly known for their sense of humor."

well, duh!

jesus but there are just way too many doughy knee-jerk conservative morons who can't get their facts straight clogging up the airwaves.

maura (maura), Thursday, 10 October 2002 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

How does he know they are not the most beautiful women in the world and they cover their faces to stop all the men from getting boners?

Mike Hanle y (mike), Thursday, 10 October 2002 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

This is actually very, very significant, insofar as it means O'Reilly has taken a stance on the tree-falling-in-forest question: if he can't see it, it can't be beautiful. Since Bill O'Reilly is always wrong, this offers conclusive proof that trees falling in forests do make sounds, not only on the physical but on the philosophical level.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 10 October 2002 15:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Bill O'Reilly is an jerk, point blank.

"You also say that California has more people than any other state. I say New York State has more people. Tell me where I'm wrong!"

The ugliest guy in the world must be that one on FOX News with his head up his arse.

Nitsuh, I love you.

This is a dangerous path to tread, nabisco, as all O'Reilly has to do is say "2 + 2 = 4" and all of creation would unravel.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 10 October 2002 17:41 (twenty-three years ago)

It's perfectly safe, Dan, as O'Reilly would be unable to say anything as simple as "2+2=4" without adding something like "and when I was growing up that was good enough for the American people, not some relativist hoo-ha about how 2 had a bad childhood so maybe we should give it credit for actually being 3 and say the answer is 5."

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 10 October 2002 17:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Heh; "that one on FOX News with his head up his arse" - um, not nearly specific enough. Fox News vs. Fox Sports, Bill O'Reilly vs. Tom Arnold, Sean Hannity vs. Michael Irvin, ugh.

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 10 October 2002 17:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't see/hear him say it, so I don't know the context, but couldn't he have meant it in a "Of course they're not ugly, but how about they take off those veils and stop being second class citizens" kind of way?

Stuart, Thursday, 10 October 2002 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Very doubtful

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 10 October 2002 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

O'Reilly is just a straight up moron, I doubt very much that there is any context that makes what he said look any better.

National Organization to Shoot Bill O'Reilly Into the Sun

From the letters page:

O'Reilly,

With your views on immigration, I figure that your ancestors must have come to America via the Bering Land Bridge or perhaps even the Mayflower. Maybe in the next "O'Reilly Family History" there will be a section on how you left America in a Sun-bound rocket ship.

HA HA

It staggers me that a person who markets himself as a news and commentary leader could so completely misunderstand the cultural climate of the areas where women are expected to completely cover up. All too often women in these regions who don't cover up or otherwise don't conform to an extremely restrictive code find themselves prosecuted if not outright killed.

Also, did he refer to Muslim women in general as covering up? There are almost as many different cultural practices as there are women throughout the world who practice Islam -- including a great many (some in Western countries, some in Moslen-majority states) who wear Western clothes and otherwise don't show any sign of being restricted because of their gender. The cultural illiteracy of that statement is downright shocking.

Uh, it was a joke.

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

A joke? Thank god for that. Perhaps he can do the ever-popular "How do you stop five black guys raping a white woman?" gag next time. That'll have 'em rolling in the aisles.
