yeah learning to drive is a good one (I did learn, hated it and never kept at it. Regretted this heavily when I moved house recently)

All of them. Basic social and organisational stuff probably kicks me in the ass most on a daily basis.
But I also wish I'd developed the skill of developing skills, as there are plenty of things I started to dabble with 20 years ago that I still have only the most cursory, surface knowledge of, and sometimes I think if I'd actually put any effort in over the past 20 years and maybe I could've turned out good at something, found a creative outlet, have something to talk to people about, be more employable now - or maybe not.

Right, learning to drive. I might have learned not to be terrified of it if I'd started earlier.

pretty much. Sometimes I feel like I never really attempted to learn anything difficult in my life and basically just stuck to the things I am naturally good at.

I feel like I am smart enough to learn plenty of skills, but I am lazy and generally have difficulty motivating myself to push through the more boring parts whenever learning anything new.

You know how they say you never forget how to ride a bike? I had a bike as a kid, fell off it one day when I was 10 and never got on one again until six months ago, when I could not even get on the thing. I could barely lift my leg over the crossbar and then I felt so unable to balance and so scared of mashing my face into the road and my own smashed up glasses, etc. Felt so out of control while the person who lent me the bike was all "c'mon, this is a basic life skill, everyone can ride a bike, what is wrong with you, stop complaining you're not even trying" etc etc.
So I guess I wish I'd kept that up as a kid. And cooking. I can't drive either, which doesn't really bother me except that all three of these things are apparently basic life skills widely considered prerequisites for the right to exist as an adult human being. I'm not sure I can swim any more either since it's probably been 16 years since I last did so. Laugh away.
I would like some sort of certificate declaring me incompetent at all everyday tasks and then I could just stick it on my door and my CV and tell everyone to stop bothering me about why I can't do them.

Not driving doesn't really bother me, but some people are incredulous about it, like it's the most natural thing in the world to take responsibility for a steel cannister hurtling down the road and barely missing other cannisters. I have enough trouble getting down the stairs without stumbling.
― jmm, Thursday, 4 September 2014 14:56 (ten years ago)
I have no interest in learning how to drive (I don't like cars at all) or riding a bike. Both are totally incompatible with me.
I don't want to be good at making food but I should learn how to make more types of things.
The important things to me..
-Learning how to manage time and organise, focusing on priorities-Learning to resist doing the easiest thing at any given moment-Stop procrastinating and stop finding ways to distract myself-Getting over OCD habit of compulsive checking-Getting up out of bed in morning without feeling crap from getting up too soon or laying awake too long (These first five are related)
-Brushing my teeth softer-Good posture-Good diet

learn how to get over the guilt of doing the easiest thing at every moment imo if its good enough for nature its good enough for lil ol me

If I did that I'd never finish a book, a drawing or a very unfamiliar piece of music. I'd never get over my OCD.
I'd just be sleeping, eating junk or on internet glancing across site updates, articles and forums.
However, I think it is a skill to recognise the things you should stop caring about. Quitting the right things.

never really felt the need to be a driver until we had a kid, but suddenly being able to transport small person without resorting to public transport seems appealing. having said that, i'm pretty sure i should not be in charge of a high-speed death machine, and adding a small child to the situation doesn't exactly make her safer.
