i mean it seems to me that clicks cost me nothing so like who cares? convince me that it is worth altering my behavior so as not to give terrible websites minutely increased traffic

no

smiles cost nothing, shitty clicks OTOH increase shitty clickbait and we're all losers

but like on the other hand if my vote in a nominal democracy like the US has a less than 0% chance of impacting the election, then certainly my clicks have no impact on the content served on the world wide web?

this could also be a thread for odious media outlets that you give clicks to. like st4rmf70nt. and t4kimag.

do you recycle?

iatee, Thursday, 4 September 2014 17:47 (ten years ago)

seems like the same basic complicity/material support/dirty hands/'don't encourage them' argument that is so widespread, applied to an actual source of the degradation of the public sphere and our collective minds and hearts

shitty clicks OTOH increase shitty clickbait

i do this every day; there are dozens of sites I won't click through to no matter what's on offer. Sure the effect of my withholding is minute but given how much I abhor the clickbait revolution I can't not do it. Added bonus: not actually reading this shit.

also free - the mildly pleasurable feeling of self-righteousness that comes from not feeding or encouraging the odious on the internet

a very mild version of self-abnegation

also if you've already clicked on a buzzfeed or huffpo article once this month just keep clicking as many as you want for the rest of the month cuz no one gives a shit about total pageviews

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 4 September 2014 18:02 (ten years ago)

would it be ok to get someone else to do the first click for me

or would knowing what they were going to do make me culpable for enjoying the consequences

j., Thursday, 4 September 2014 18:05 (ten years ago)

slightly conversely, i have heard that ppl who pay to promote a tweet have to pay for each interaction it spurs (this seems like an insanely bad deal so i'm skeptical tbh) but on that theory if rank garbage shows up in your tl then by all means, chat away

goole, Thursday, 4 September 2014 18:05 (ten years ago)

is this the new 'I don't even own a tv'

sleepingbag, Thursday, 4 September 2014 18:06 (ten years ago)

IDK what effect it has but I never click on a Neanderthal thread
