Mordy, Thursday, 4 September 2014 19:20 (ten years ago)

The fallout between her and Carson was sad. Thought her documentary was very thoughtful on the subject of aging, and fighting against it (not the plastic surgery end of it, but the compulsion to work).

My mom loved her on the Tonight Show and I thought she seemed likable enough on her reality show. Also my mom always watches QVC and joan is on there often hawking goods. She seems like one of my slightly embarrassing, elderly aunts and I feel sad she's gone.

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 4 September 2014 20:07 (ten years ago)

Her "work" in the last 30 years was full of wealth worship and mocking the powerless, fitting perfectly with her "don't tax me" political outlook.

She DID have something once, though.

I did find one pearl in A Piece of Work, when she says about the 2008 election, "Do you think it fucking matters who's president?"

Οὖτις, Thursday, 4 September 2014 20:10 (ten years ago)

she's closer to Rickles in the equal-opportunity-mockery sweepstakes imo

Οὖτις, Thursday, 4 September 2014 20:11 (ten years ago)

Nah, her comedy was often vile.

Treeship, Thursday, 4 September 2014 20:12 (ten years ago)

I like her purely out of familiarity.

Treeship, Thursday, 4 September 2014 20:13 (ten years ago)

honestly i just never got the appeal. "oh lots of gays like joan rivers, weird, not going to look into that 90% chance it's sad." sort of feel like it's similar to sinatra for straight men now? the received second-rate celeb socialite idol. except sinatra was actually creative afaict

yeah I agree there's some grey area here (is vaudeville standup? idk); the title is mostly because she was the only woman to come up through the boys' club of comedy clubs and TV writing/appearances in the television era. which is still notable imo, p much every female comic after her owes her a debt for this and is aware of it.

“I was the one who really caused Edgar’s suicide,” she would say, “because, while we were making love, I took the bag off my head.”

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 4 September 2014 20:49 (ten years ago)

There's self-deprecation and then there's Joan Rivers.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 4 September 2014 20:49 (ten years ago)

still one of entertainment's greatest examples of careerism as mental illness:

Joan and her daughter, Melissa, portray themselves in an autobiographical TV movie about the aftermath of the 1987 suicide of Rivers' husband, Edgar Rosenberg. From the opening sequence, in which shots of Joan in a hospital for a liposuction operation are contrasted with scenes of Rosenberg overdosing on pills and liquor, you realize that Tears and Laughter will be absolutely shameless. The movie doesn't avoid any awkward moment, from mother and daughter going through Rosenberg's personal effects (''His Filofax!'') to Joan's monologue directed at her husband as he lies in his coffin.

joan's self-loathing seems closer to Rodney Dangerfield's imo - altho Rodney never directed his rage outward at external targets, it was always at himself

Avid Lynch, the editing suite that will unintelligible pilot episode into a great film.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 4 September 2014 21:43 (ten years ago)

i have no delusions about Jerry Lewis's ugly side -- at his best, neither does he? -- but unlike Joan Rivers, he did more than one thing well in his career.

Joan Rivers is classic, shame on you people. I am verklempt. You can see her earlier work - as that on the Carol Burnett show - on Youtube.

Crabby, crabby crabby....

Opus Gai (I M Losted), Thursday, 4 September 2014 23:19 (ten years ago)

Just happened to watch a Carol Burnett Show two days ago with Joan Rivers. Joan was the third funniest lady on that show.

She told one funny joke though..."on my wedding night my husband said "I'll help you with your buttons". I said "I'M ALREADY NAKED!"".

scott seward, Friday, 5 September 2014 16:26 (ten years ago)

morbs, i would hardly equate rivers's and lewis's achievements (although god knows lewis made his fair share of awful movies and television), and i agree that lewis has always been quite aware of his failings and dark side. in fact it's been the source of some of his cruellist and strangest comedy. which is where i drew the parallel with rivers.

I dunno. (amateurist), Friday, 5 September 2014 16:54 (ten years ago)

cruelest

I dunno. (amateurist), Friday, 5 September 2014 16:54 (ten years ago)

I don't know what Rivers was supposed to do as she got more popular. I always watched her fashion shows - there are oodles of less self-aware folk in fashion who don't deserve media attention. Everyone in Beverly Hills looks, dresses and talks "right wing"...whoopie do. Like that's really going to change.

Not a fan of this "they should have stayed edgy and boho" schtick.

Opus Gai (I M Losted), Friday, 5 September 2014 20:44 (ten years ago)

I dunno. (amateurist), Friday, 5 September 2014 20:45 (ten years ago)

just compare Joan Rivers w/ someone she apparently knew in the Village circa 1960, Lily Tomlin

no contest

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Friday, 5 September 2014 20:51 (ten years ago)

rivers was never NOT edgy in a certain sense, but her late career kind of illustrates the dead end that "edgy" can become

I dunno. (amateurist), Friday, 5 September 2014 20:53 (ten years ago)

i do think the sudden instappreciation for her as a "feminist" icon is a little o_O. i guess you can see in her pitiless/relentless subjection of herself and other celebrities to unforgiving standards of beauty a kind of self-awareness that could be recuperated as critique. but.... seriouslY?

I dunno. (amateurist), Friday, 5 September 2014 20:54 (ten years ago)

also, this piece (mostly in her own words) reveals her desperation I could detect as a kid when she was on Hollywood Squares -- refusing to bluff answers so everyone could see how smart she was. She says comedians need to be "outside" pissing into the tent, then she bleats that she hasn't been to the White House since her beloved Reagans left:
