Has ILX reached 'Peak Opinion'?

Feel like I am seeing less and less opinions being expressed on ILX

Leading me to wonder if ILX has reached and passed 'Peak Opinion'

Meaning that ILX will never again express as many opinions as it did in the past

http://i.imgur.com/Pnh1UV1.png

Perhaps post-millennials simply are not interested in strong opinions anymore

We just want to laugh, have a good time and enjoy memes

What do you think?

i think everything post-ep7 is their "late period"!

to me it makes more sense than thinking of it chronologically because they seem to me infinitely more settled on a sound post-gantz graf than they did in the early days.

imo "early period" is when they sounded like a lot of other early idm (i.e. not terribly distinct from b12, for example), then "mid period" is when they were radically switching up the vibe on every album (tri-repetae through confield) and then "late period" it pretty much all sounds like a blend of lp5 and confield

To me the 81-84 Belew records are destroyed by the Absent Lovers double-live set which gets nearly every song I liked from those releases and IMO improves on pretty much everything. It's so full of energy that I remember going back to those vinyls and thinking my turntable was broken - no way the originals were that slow!!

One thing I loved about the first incarnation(s) of Crimson was how intent they were on doing their own thing. KC often gets lumped in with Yes or Genesis but IMO I think they are closer to Van der Graaf Generator or Magma, they always tried to plow ahead with their own sound for better or worse and even a record like In the Wake of Poseidon has a number of charms that you don't hear on a lot of other progrock albums. I never quite came around on Islands; to me it sounded like a record with some great ideas but it never quite realizes them. I admit though that I haven't heard it in nearly a decade.

EveningStar (Sund4r) wrote this on thread King Crimson: Classic Or Dud on board I Love Music on Sep 22, 2014

Hm, I've never heard Islands or Lizard tbh. I've only known one person who reps for them and I assumed he was a bit off. (He HATES the Belew era and doesn't care too much for the Wetton era.) I'm a little intrigued.

I've liked Discipline for a long time but I've been getting into Three of a Perfect Pair and Beat. They're a bit poppier than Discipline, getting into Police and Peter Gabriel territory sometimes, which I don't mind. I feel like Belew tones down some of the most obnoxious elements of his delivery. Some great stuff in this show imo.

The soul of wit may become the very body of untruth. However elegant and memorable, brevity can never, in the nature of things, do justice to all the facts of a complex situation. On such a theme one can be brief only by omission and simplification. Omission and simplification help us to understand -- but help us, in many cases, to understand the wrong thing; for our comprehension may be only of the abbreviator's neatly formulated notions, not of the vast, ramifying reality from which these notions have been so arbitrarily abstracted.

ilx is experiencing an extreme version of tendencies on the web in general. ilx posters are so good at being ilx posters -- so quick, knowledgeable, and savvy -- that they can communicate in these little gestures or asides and barely ever have to explain themselves. before posters log on, they know what the big issues are, what the possible positions are for them to take, what it means to take these positions, and how they can respond to the ones they disagree with. it is almost as if we are all thinking with the same mind. the elegance of these frictionless, zingful back and forths is a sign of their untruth.

Treeship, Wednesday, 24 September 2014 01:30 (ten years ago)

it's not so much that people don't have opinions, but they have these prefabricated opinions that come already linked to an entire body of assumptions that everyone else in the discussion implicitly recognizes and acknowledges.

Treeship, Wednesday, 24 September 2014 01:32 (ten years ago)

i'm as guilty of this as anyone by the way. and the predictability is part of what i like about ilx. but if one is intuiting a dearth of original voices and viewpoints here, i think that is the reason.

Opinions are inherent in any discussion that deals with the arts; e.g., music; ergo, ILXor.com.

ilx may be dying a slow death, but it's still a place I come several times a day

I dont know what i'll do if ilx dies, since i dont use facebook and im terrible at twitter and now i dont even have a RSS feed. maybe i'll stop using the internet entirely and ascend to heaven.

probably the most constructive thing to do is to stop posting on threads like this and post instead on threads of greater import

calstars, Sunday, 22 November 2015 01:11 (nine years ago)

Ilx is not dying

Treeship, Sunday, 22 November 2015 01:12 (nine years ago)

brimstead, Sunday, 22 November 2015 01:33 (nine years ago)

Whenever I see this thread title I imagine it not to be about number of opinions expressed but about this single platonic ideal opinion.

there is no heaven, only a hell, and this is it, the hell, we are in it

ilx has declined in terms of numbers of users, but it's...hit a plateau i guess? ilx is still one of my 3 permatabs at home and on my phone. still read several long ass threads a day. still make the effort to chime in with rote, poorly punctuated nonsense so that ppl remember my online persona b4 i die.
