I Started Something I Couldn't Finish

How often do you start posting a response to a thread and think "No, this is a rub" and don't press the Submit button after all?

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 11 October 2002 09:55 (twenty-three years ago)

the supportive response here would be no answers at all. oh well.

angela (angela), Friday, 11 October 2002 09:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I reckon that about a quarter of my intended postings never reach you in the end. This is because:

I see a flaw in my own argument that I know will be shot down in flames

or

I realise that someone will find my post either offensive or silly

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 11 October 2002 09:58 (twenty-three years ago)

ditto

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Friday, 11 October 2002 10:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, same here. i've done it twice today already.

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 11 October 2002 10:01 (twenty-three years ago)

About one in ten.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 11 October 2002 10:07 (twenty-three years ago)

About three in four; which is compensated by deliberately throwaway/hysterical rubbidge.

Ess Kay (esskay), Friday, 11 October 2002 10:10 (twenty-three years ago)

All the time, especially if I hit submit and I get one of those messages asking if I'm sure - coz somebody got there first with something way wittier, again.

Plinky (Plinky), Friday, 11 October 2002 10:12 (twenty-three years ago)

this thread pleases me. i thought it was just me. yay!

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 11 October 2002 10:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got that Smiths song in my head now and it wont go away...

Plinky (Plinky), Friday, 11 October 2002 10:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I often don't hit Submit, mainly when my argument/sentence has become too convoluted and I can't see how it contributes to the thread any more.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 11 October 2002 10:44 (twenty-three years ago)

1 in 4.

Graham (graham), Friday, 11 October 2002 11:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Three out five times, I'd say.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 11 October 2002 11:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Mouse!

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 11 October 2002 11:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe 1 in 8. Mainl;y for variants of the "let's not cause massive offence and make everyone hate me, eh?" reason

Sofa King Alternative (Sofa King Alternative), Friday, 11 October 2002 11:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I reject more than half. I've deleted four bad Smiths puns in the last five minutes, partly because I'm not funny but mainly because each successive answer is going to have to be funnier still to avoid killing it.

I am also often rude to people, and (usually) see sense before hitting submit.

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 11 October 2002 12:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like to post answers to the serious threads 'cause I have lots to say but lack courage. Everyone else is so knowledgable & eloquent. Makes me feel like a chump in comparison.

Miss Laura, Friday, 11 October 2002 12:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't have the courage to post to those either, Laura, don't worry about it.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 11 October 2002 13:04 (twenty-three years ago)

nor me, let's just hang out in the chump threads.

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 11 October 2002 13:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I have deleted several Smiths puns too. I suppose it's like this Thomas Lux poem I read the other day (I paraphrase): the human urge to leave our scribble on the world is very strong, but we have to write something pretty bloody good to improve on an empty, snow white page (or an empty ILX message box)...

Archel (Archel), Friday, 11 October 2002 13:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I have posting diarrhea.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 11 October 2002 13:28 (twenty-three years ago)

The technical term is logorrhea.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 11 October 2002 13:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Wear gloves, it would be like a diaper.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 11 October 2002 13:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe 1 in 10, either because I am boring myself (boring you doesn't give me pause, obv) or a witty insult tips too far from hilarious and towards nasty.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 11 October 2002 20:21 (twenty-three years ago)

very rarely. usually i just don't post when i have nothing to say or i post something boring.

Maria (Maria), Friday, 11 October 2002 20:58 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe 2 in 5 for me. sometimes I will cancel, then write and edited version. whan this happens, someone will ask a question of me that would have been covered in the longer post.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 11 October 2002 22:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm, quite often. Half? More? I don't know. You will be annoyed but possibly slightly relieved for my intelligence that the ones you see are probably not actually any better than the ones which get abandoned.

(I wish I could write more concise posts but whenever I try to edit them down they just get longer and more rambly. Sorry.)

Rebecca (reb), Friday, 11 October 2002 22:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Stop me if you think you've heard this one before, but I am k-sad that so many are self-censoring the Smiths puns! Probably about 1/20; in my haste to join the debate sometimes I realize I have nothing of note to add; though usually I'm able to block out this suspicion.
