OK, someone tell me where I can get good rekkid shoping in Brussels. Especially if I'm after sixties French girl groups and singers, filthy New Beat and the lost works of Berntholer.

i am sure that jeff will be better than this. but right down the street from the Ancien Belgique there's a few great ones. The BEST ONE however is the one around the corner from Manneken Pies.

nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 12 October 2002 06:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you for that - any names and addresses of shops gratefully received. I also like the sound of these Manneken Pies of which you speak.

tag, Saturday, 12 October 2002 09:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Uh rough translation: Little Man Peeing. Now, DONT tell me you already know this (and hence have a liking for golden showers). ;-)

nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 12 October 2002 11:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Err...I did already know this, although I thought it was "pis", not "pies". I can assure you I like my showers wee free.

There's a few on http://www.motion.state51.co.uk/shopfinder/ , though I've never been to Brussels so I can't offer personal recommendations or confirmation that they still exist. You could try asking google too, I found great pages about record shops in Antwerp and Cologne that way. Yay. I meant to write to the page authors and thank them... oh well, if they see this in their referrer logs then, er, thanks.

(Tweedehandsplaten is a fine word and no mistake.)

Rebecca (reb), Saturday, 12 October 2002 14:27 (twenty-three years ago)

When I went to Brussels a few years back I was most impressed by the little shop just up from the Mannekin, too. I wouldn't have too many high hopes on the Berntholer front though Tagster.

Tim (Tim), Saturday, 12 October 2002 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Antwerp is fucking ACE. If you have time, go there to do some recordshopping. Do keep in mind that on sundaty the shops are closed.

nathalie (nathalie), Sunday, 13 October 2002 07:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I grew up in Brussels, moving to England when I was 16. It was only then that I discovered underground music, so I don't have any recommendations. Back in the day - Gallery Agora and the arcade beneath De Brokaire (sp), the place just around the corner from Liquidama and Fnac - back then, the 80s, you could check your jacket in at the cloak room filled with CDs, then check it out on the other side of the alarm system... and to be honest it seemed such a brilliant idea that I never told anyone, in case they ruined it. First time I thought about it in about 13 years, first time I told anyone.... ever.

nick.K (nick.K), Sunday, 13 October 2002 16:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks to your generous help, I've located a place called Juke Box which isn't far from where we're staying and is rumoured to be quite the treasure trove of French pop wonders.

I don't have much hope on the Berntholer front either, Tim. From the evidence of a CD_R I acquired, it seems the "My suitor" 12" was their finest hour by some way and I've already got that.

I don't think we're going to Antwerp, but we are going to Liege to see Herrmann and Kleine. Huzzah!

I think you'll find Brussels has changed a lot in 13 years, nick ;-)

Okay, here are my recommendations. For new releases:

- 'Music Mania' in rue Fourche (very close to the Gran' Place)

- 'Caroline Music' in Passage St. Honoré (again, very central)

For second hand:

'Juke Box Shop', 165 boulevard Anspach (central, 5 minutes south of the Bourse. This is where to go for your yéyé and other 60s French stuff, as well as classic rock and indie. Vinyl only - including racks and racks of 7" singles, the rarest ones being behind the counter - just ask for what you want. Lots of rare stuff, but the owner knows his onions, so it's generally expensive. Also N.B. - CASH ONLY.)

'Arlequin' (Eikstraat/rue du Chêne branch). This is the shop 'round the corner from the mannekin pis. CDs and vinyl. Some bargains to be had, but be prepared to delve and get your hands dusty. There are other branches of the shop elsewhere in the city, but I think this is the best one.

'DiscoSold' - boulevard Adolphe Max (second hand CDs and vinyl - north of De Brouckere, just past Waterstones)
and
just before you get to 'DiscoSold' there's another second hand shop, whose name I can't remeber but their billboard uses a picture of planet Earth. Used to be a reggae/world music specialist, but now sells everything except classical. Small, but I have found lots of great stuff there recently. CDs and vinyl sold (the 7" singles are not on display - ask for the boxes).

There are also a number of dance music specialist shops. Let me know if you need info about those.

Jeff W (Jeff W), Monday, 14 October 2002 08:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I should of course have added: when are you going to be in town, Tag? Very rude of me.

Jeff W, Monday, 14 October 2002 08:38 (twenty-three years ago)

We're going in two weeks, Jeff. Fancy a pint?

Tag, Monday, 14 October 2002 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll settle for a metric measure of beer, but sure. (I'll e-mail you nearer the time.) Are you still going to Bruges on tjis trip? If so, say hi to nathalie.

Jeff W, Tuesday, 15 October 2002 08:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Tag: as yr long standing consultant in these matters, I suggest a chocolate frenzy.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 08:44 (twenty-three years ago)

uh when are you guys meeting up? if its on a sunday/wednesday i might be able to be there as well.

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 08:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, we're there from Friday till Monday and we're in Liege the first night. We were planning a day trip to Bruges at some point, so that would probably be the Sunday. But Saturday and Sunday evenings will probably be free.

Tim, how are things in the 'chocolate consultancy' trade?

Tag, Tuesday, 15 October 2002 09:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Well let me know when you will be in bruges... we can meet up if you like/can. my email address is nathalie@stevienixed.com

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 09:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Just creamy.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 10:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, there's nothing I like more than a drop of Devon cream.

Tag, Tuesday, 15 October 2002 10:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Better by the spoonful, etc.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 20:28 (twenty-three years ago)

nathalie, check yr e-mail!

Jeff W, Thursday, 24 October 2002 11:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, nathalie, do it now!

Tag, Thursday, 24 October 2002 11:22 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
four years pass...

Can we have more general talk about Brussels? What is it like? What does one do in Brussels? I have access to a pretty good deal on a quick Brussels break from the UK and would like to know more.

Yours,
Admrl

One drinks beer, eats chocolate, and goes to the TinTin museum.

ailsa, Tuesday, 17 August 2010 22:21 (fifteen years ago)

dell (del), Tuesday, 17 August 2010 22:23 (fifteen years ago)

Great things to do in Brussels:
- Eat
- Drink
- Buy postcards at Plaizier, the best postcard shop ever.

Brussels is sometimes my favourite place in the world to hang out. I can give eating/drinking recs, though if there are locals around they can probably do better...

seandalai, Tuesday, 17 August 2010 22:30 (fifteen years ago)

Not really a fan of Belgian chocolate though, tends to be too sweet for my tastes.

seandalai, Tuesday, 17 August 2010 22:31 (fifteen years ago)

eat waterzooi, a kind of soup/stew.

go to the Sunday flea market - full of atmosphere

Daniel Giraffe, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 08:14 (fifteen years ago)

the flea market there is really something else. tons of paintings and records and even one dude who just had piles of scientific thermometers. hundreds of them. in thick cardboard tubes.

there's a great little cafe in that square too. when i went, they were playing Uriah Heep on the stereo and lunch was cooked by the cute waitress's mum.

gnarly sceptre, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 10:00 (fifteen years ago)

I live about 30 km from Brussels but I can't tell you when I've last been there. I only drive around it when going other places. :-/

StanM, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 10:43 (fifteen years ago)

i kindof hate brussels, antwerp and gent are both really close by (cheap) train and both hipper and more beautiful.

plax (ico), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 10:47 (fifteen years ago)

StanM, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 10:50 (fifteen years ago)

gnarly sceptre, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 11:05 (fifteen years ago)

I love Ghent, but Brussels, too, has its charms.

Daniel Giraffe, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 11:53 (fifteen years ago)

one year passes...

Can anyone recommend record shops in Brussels? I may be visiting Ghent and Antwerp too in the next week.

mmmm, Friday, 25 May 2012 10:33 (thirteen years ago)

or general tips for going out this weekend?

mmmm, Saturday, 26 May 2012 17:26 (thirteen years ago)

heading to Ghent next month, but I'm planning on just walking around & eating well (& working of course, as is the point of the trip)

no suggestions for Brussels; had an ok but not epic time there a year or so ago; thought it was kinda drab though it was December & super cold so maybe it would have been livelier o/w. did not find great places to eat either b/c was in the city center which I gather is not the heart of the culinary action.
