def was a bit choked up by this and its end; it's v good, episodic but really feels like a novel, and im impressed they could tell it all in 4 hrs
― johnny crunch, Thursday, 6 November 2014 02:43 (eleven years ago)
Looking at the novel's full character list, amazed it's only 288 pages, barely longer than the teleplay for this thing musta been (with 1/20 or so the characters)
Anyway this was great for a lot of reasons I'm too tired to get into right now, everyone should watch it
― Simon H., Thursday, 6 November 2014 02:49 (eleven years ago)
yea i guess theyre actually connected short stories? which makes a little more sense that it could be that short
and it won the pulitzer! i mean, who knew
has anyone read it?
― johnny crunch, Thursday, 6 November 2014 03:48 (eleven years ago)
Just caught the first ep and liked this better than any other series this year so far, some wonderful acting and some top notch character studies. McDormand and Jenkins both put incredible shifts in. I loved that mouse ran over the cat scene in the kitchen, the kid's laugh and McDormands withering Go see your girlfriend response. I wish these tardy torrent sites would upload the last 3 eps I am literally dying to see them.
― xelab, Thursday, 6 November 2014 20:28 (eleven years ago)
i read it. it's really good and a fairly quick read. the list of characters does make it seem like an epic but a lot of them are mentioned once or twice. also a few of the stories only feature olive briefly or simply mentioned by other characters, so i imagine those stories won't be in the HBO version. i watched the first episode last night and thought it captured the tone well. it's deeply sad, but i like olive so much that it is still enjoyable to watch. very glad that donuts were featured in the opening credits, they get mentioned a lot in the book.
― mizzell, Thursday, 6 November 2014 21:42 (eleven years ago)
be careful about torrenting HBO, i know several people who got letters from their ISP about it. unless of course you know of some foolproof way of getting these episodes, in which case hook a brother up

I use Peerblock and have never had any trouble.

this is the sopranos
― schlump, Friday, 7 November 2014 20:38 (eleven years ago)
olive is p close to livia, its true
― johnny crunch, Friday, 7 November 2014 21:05 (eleven years ago)
Just watched the 2nd ep and decided that this is too good to be binge watched and am saving the last 2 for the weekend. Was thinking since 6 feet under I haven't seen much of Jenkins but when you look up his filmography he is in plenty of mainstream movies of the last two decades. Olive is a far better written character than Livia Soprano and her misanthropy is still comparatively very charming and witty, as rude as she is her character is constantly otm with her observations, rather than just outright rude.
― xelab, Saturday, 8 November 2014 02:39 (eleven years ago)
i watched all four episodes in one sitting somehow and thought it was excellent. thankfully it kinda blurs together so it'll be fresh whenever i revisit it. but really truly loved this.

This was powerful as hell. Good casting of Bill Murray in the last part.

deservedly sweeping up all categories

just watched the first segment -- uniformly great acting, esp Jenkins and Zoe Kazan i thought.

as rude as she is her character is constantly otm with her observations,
well telling the truth constantly is a hellish thing to do to people.

I loved everything about this series
― Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 27 September 2015 05:07 (ten years ago)
The wedding & the home made dress felt like a deleted scene from my family
― Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 27 September 2015 05:10 (ten years ago)
it took me 1.5 eps to realize that the lifer lounge pianist was Martha Wainwright.

i didnt even clock her, that's cool
well i wouldn't have, if not for the credits.
does that include using pink marker on the d-in-law's white garments?
photographed by Fred Elmes btw (Blue Velvet, Eraserhead, The Ice Storm et al)

Watched ep 1 with someone who wasn't anywhere near as receptive as I. "I don't like any of these characters." I said "I have correspondence with all of them."
― Norse Jung (Eric H.), Monday, 28 September 2015 19:35 (ten years ago)
i read the book, it's good, the miniseries is better
― johnny crunch, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 18:11 (nine years ago)
there is so much hilarity and sadness in this and some killer dialogue
― MoMsnet (calzino), Monday, 26 July 2021 23:15 (four years ago)
I'm about to finish the book. "Security" is one of the saddest, truest stories I've read. Time to watch the series, especially since it's impossible to imagine Olivia without Frances McDormand; Strout might as well have written the book with her publicity photo by her laptop.
― The Luda of Suburbia (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 October 2025 16:39 (one month ago)
It's a fucking masterpiece.
― vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Thursday, 23 October 2025 18:22 (one month ago)
the hilarious cynicism of lots of the dialogue in this is so unAmerican. But it's very sad and genuinely moving as well.
― vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Thursday, 23 October 2025 18:28 (one month ago)
i read it a couple of years ago and loved it.
― jaymc, Thursday, 23 October 2025 18:42 (one month ago)
The son not protesting when she announces she's returning to Maine -- just perfect pitch, that dialogue and framing. I hope this story made it into the series.
― The Luda of Suburbia (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 October 2025 18:51 (one month ago)
I don't think it is played like that from memory tbh, but it's still an excruciating visit and everything is bad, including her son's relationship and dogshit stepped on etc!
― vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Thursday, 23 October 2025 19:07 (one month ago)
I need to watch this again because all the tv stuff sucks these days
― vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Thursday, 23 October 2025 19:08 (one month ago)
it's still an excruciating visit and everything is bad, including her son's relationship and dogshit stepped on etc!
Yeah, that's in thes tory.
― The Luda of Suburbia (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 October 2025 19:38 (one month ago)
Career-high performance by McDormand, superior to at least two of her three Oscar-winning roles. Bill Murray does some his quietest, subtlest acting in the last 25 minutes.
― The Luda of Suburbia (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 3 November 2025 11:06 (one month ago)
For me this series is probably the finest thing TV has produced in the last decade. Jenkins is superb as well because he brings a lot of pathos to the more complex than usual mix of cucked & cringeworthy, delusional, but with a fragile core type of husband character. It's just so good. Must have watched it at least 10 times now, lol.
― vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Monday, 3 November 2025 11:29 (one month ago)
otm
― The Luda of Suburbia (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 3 November 2025 12:40 (one month ago)
Thanks to Cholodenko and Fred Elmes the last 15 minutes are Ozu-worthy in their depiction of inexorable old age.
― The Luda of Suburbia (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 3 November 2025 12:41 (one month ago)
yeah also the cinematography is absolutely remarkable and there are more than a few bits of this that make me a bit lot teary in an Autumn Afternoon kind of way. A lot of what is so called prestige tv has not reached anywhere near the standard this did on all levels imo.
"I'm just waiting for my dog to die so I can shoot myself" is a line that as brutal as it sounds becomes more relatable as you get older and I was very moved by the old dog's performance as well. Honestly I was welling up over the dog!
