my favorite is 2 drinks but dammit it's kinda hard to just ride that feeling

carot tard (rip van wanko), Wednesday, 12 November 2014 18:42 (ten years ago)

4 drinks and a little weed - not an option ...

BlackIronPrison, Wednesday, 12 November 2014 18:49 (ten years ago)

Less than three or more than six. That middle stretch is a chore.

calumerio, Wednesday, 12 November 2014 19:16 (ten years ago)

I'm fine with two, and five can be fun, depending on the context. But more than five, nope, can't/won't do it.

2 drinks plus a little chillum and a joni or miles record

marcos, Wednesday, 12 November 2014 19:59 (ten years ago)

not that i'd want to do it often but 10-12 is the one i enjoy the most. anything less than 5 and i feel the negative side effects without feeling drunk, which is why i almost never drink in the first place.

een, Wednesday, 12 November 2014 20:33 (ten years ago)

My favourite is the elusive (and maybe illusory?) state where you can drink all night (like 10+) but stay on top of the wave. Requires pacing for sure, and may only exist in my head.

legit new threat wrt to a norman invasion (seandalai), Wednesday, 12 November 2014 20:57 (ten years ago)

i could drink all night or just have a couple with old pals and have a great time. it's the awkward social anxiety + open bar situations like weddings and office parties where you actually have to decide how many is right for the night. sensible answer is generally 2, maybe 3 but sometimes the sensible thing proves to be impossible.

Brio2, Wednesday, 12 November 2014 21:10 (ten years ago)

yea depends on how long i'm hanging out. if it's a quick hour and a half thing after work then 2 is good. bit longer and three is better.

marcos, Wednesday, 12 November 2014 22:27 (ten years ago)

when i'm looking to have a lot of fun and the circumstances allow it, like if we have friends or family staying for the weekend, i think my favorite is having a beer with a late lunch, maybe get outside or something, then come back around late afternoon and do some cooking and drink a few. best time to drink imo is while cooking. you can take a break and eat some food at dinner time and have some water and then resume and maybe smoke a little weed once the kids are in bed. it might add up to 5 or 6 (which for me is a lot since i'm a lightweight) but it's over the course of whole afternoon -> evening -> night thing and at 1am i might be a little fucked up but for the most part it's felt like a good 3-beer buzz with some weed

marcos, Wednesday, 12 November 2014 22:32 (ten years ago)

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 12 November 2014 23:39 (ten years ago)

4 is the magic number. i assume it's fun after that point but i generally can't remember

joni mitchell jarre (dog latin), Thursday, 13 November 2014 14:04 (ten years ago)

i don't like drinking (more than 3 drinks) and then eating... instant hangover and impossible to resume.

joni mitchell jarre (dog latin), Thursday, 13 November 2014 14:13 (ten years ago)

weekend at marcos' place sounds great

Brio2, Thursday, 13 November 2014 14:15 (ten years ago)

My answers are vastly different based on whether I'm sitting down, talking and smoking while I have 3 glasses of wine (more drunk), or 3 screwdrivers but no cigarettes while dancing energetically (less drunk). So I'd say the trick to drinking is delicately plying yourself with the right amount for however you're feeling.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 13 November 2014 14:35 (ten years ago)

4 but i'm really big so that's probably equivalent to 2 or 3 on most people

ciderpress, Thursday, 13 November 2014 14:55 (ten years ago)

I am feeling kind of bad about my drinking with all you 2 or 3 guys in this thread.

emil.y, Thursday, 13 November 2014 14:57 (ten years ago)

6 is probably best, over that and I get sloppy and annoying, prone to repeat myself etc, and over 8 I am in fall-asleep-on-nightbus-and-lose-my-glasses territory. Adjust for length of time spent drinking.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 13 November 2014 14:59 (ten years ago)

1. These days, I can't be bothered with it.

Mark G, Thursday, 13 November 2014 15:00 (ten years ago)

xps: That's a good point about size/weight. Probably the case for me as well.

how's life, Thursday, 13 November 2014 15:01 (ten years ago)

hey, 4 is a conservative aim. it's never 4.

joni mitchell jarre (dog latin), Thursday, 13 November 2014 15:02 (ten years ago)

Just to be clear it's not unusual for me to drink a bottle of wine in one night. It's just not every night. And I'm pretty sure what makes me feel really "drunk" is actually the cigarettes that go with. Feeling this the next morning more and more at my greatly advanced age.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 13 November 2014 15:03 (ten years ago)

I am glad that these days I'm rarely tempted to go overboard, I shut it off after 6-7 or so. But if I start I usually will want at least 4-5.

carot tard (rip van wanko), Thursday, 13 November 2014 15:05 (ten years ago)

Well, cigarettes definitely make you more hungover.

how's life, Thursday, 13 November 2014 15:06 (ten years ago)

based on the hangovers i've had lately i'm gonna go with zero

example (crüt), Thursday, 13 November 2014 15:54 (ten years ago)

The most fun I've ever had has probably been on 6+ nights, but I just don't have the risk tolerance or hangover tolerance for that anymore. I guess if I was in a hypothetical party in my own or a friend's house where I knew I was crashing there and knew I didn't have to deal with my toddler the next morning, but that just never happens. So I'm usually a 1-2 drink man these days.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Thursday, 13 November 2014 16:07 (ten years ago)

I feel like the golden period is when you're on your second and you can feel your first one kicking in, that works in all situations - with people on your own. Past that point and you have to be with other people and its really dependent on situation or company, the fourth to sixth drink can feel amazing or it can feel like a slog.

Matt DC, Thursday, 13 November 2014 16:12 (ten years ago)

Golden pool-playing period = 7 8ths of the way through your first pint.

joni mitchell jarre (dog latin), Thursday, 13 November 2014 16:19 (ten years ago)

I think I'm going to try to stay on the wagon for a bit - but I have a DJ gig this weekend, basically the only situation where I feel compelled to drink - mostly because it's kind of boring to hang out in a bar for so long without drinking. Might just have a pint of club soda with a shot of vodka in it or something, just to have something to sip.

Brio2, Thursday, 13 November 2014 16:23 (ten years ago)

Depends on the libations. Two martinis and a couple glasses of wine make me happy. I don't drink much beer these days, and a pint of these new high sugar microbrews will fuck me up more than a martini.

a 6 pack of bud tallboys, consumed at a reasonable rate, will take me from getting home from work until bedtime and not leave me hung over.

carot tard (rip van wanko), Thursday, 13 November 2014 17:07 (ten years ago)

Obviously it depends on my tolerance and what kind of setting, put standard night at the pub after a decent meal I'd say 4-5.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Thursday, 13 November 2014 17:12 (ten years ago)

I'm such a lightweight these days that one or two will give me a decently mellow buzz most nights (my girlfriend and I will nurse one beer between us, more often than not), but I can knock back five or six over a more extended period (like an entire weekend day & night). After getting completely blitzed by doing so over the past several years, I've learned I can no longer be trusted to mix my own drinks (I basically have no idea what the equivalent number of discrete drinks would've been in those instances). When I'm home and around my sibs, it seems like we all constantly have a drink in hand for the entirety of our stay, which is an indulgence I can handle and enjoy a couple times a year but not much more.

It's A Living! (Old Lunch), Thursday, 13 November 2014 17:53 (ten years ago)

i don't work fridays, so after 3 days of sobriety (weekly rule : no booze mon/tues/wed), i hit the wine.
glass #1 has hit the spot, and about to pour glass #2.
friday = my day of beer/lager, whereas thurs/sat/sun = red wine.
tempted to live blog as the number of glasses goes up, but fear you would condemn me as an alcholic.
up until a couple of years ago when life kicked me in the guts, i was a serious lightweight, but now the kids are older, i'm enjoying making up for lost boozing time.

mark e, Thursday, 13 November 2014 18:32 (ten years ago)

alcholic : alcoholic

1 glass so far.
honest.

mark e, Thursday, 13 November 2014 18:34 (ten years ago)

knew I didn't have to deal with my toddler the next morning, but that just never happens

yea i have to really think hard and ask myself "is this worth it" because there is no sleeping in. it doesn't happen. mayyyyybe until 8:30am or so if my wife is generous enough to let me sleep in. so anytime it gets past 11pm and i'm still interested in drinking more i have to ask "is this worth it" to feel like shit at 6:30am and my kid needs a new diaper and breakfast and is ready to go. often it is worth it but still.

marcos, Thursday, 13 November 2014 18:38 (ten years ago)

mark e you are in the golden zone, 1-2. And yet you'll drink on and on. Alcohol very similar to hard drugs in this respect.

Pict in a blanket (WilliamC), Thursday, 13 November 2014 18:52 (ten years ago)

ok, this is the tipping point.

you see, i have no need to get up tomorrow as the kids sort themselves out for school.

currently, there appears to be a lack of neighbours.
that said, even if they were in, i am limiting the wall shake
(the soundsystem is situated on the far far side of hq from the connecting wall. so there is very little sonic bleed when windows are closed).

subsequently, glass #3 has disappeared remarkably quickly and has been thoroughly enjoyed with the monster magnet soundtrack (album = dopes to infinity).

thing is, i know that after glass #4 it's a one way street to excess and passing out on the west wing sofa, resulting in a 2-3am wake up groove.

hey ho ..

mark e, Thursday, 13 November 2014 20:32 (ten years ago)

If you are at home and have control over the music the ability to crest this wave just goes on and on. Some of my worst hangovers have come the day after coming home from the pub at a sensible time, with headphones on, but hey there's no one home and infinite music at my disposal, and there happens to be beer in the fridge.

These days I'm a bit warier of the dangers though.

Matt DC, Thursday, 13 November 2014 20:50 (ten years ago)

Actually the night when I discovered that I could do that post-pub thing just by drinking pints of water at home while still keeping the buzz going was some sort of revelation, still felt like crap the next day because I decided it was a good idea to listen to Nevermind at 2am.

Matt DC, Thursday, 13 November 2014 20:54 (ten years ago)

yeah .. at home.
west wing + noise + wine is indeed a special groove.
i am lucky to have such a situation.
late night/early morning pints of water = life saving.
well, that and staying in bed the next day ..

mark e, Thursday, 13 November 2014 20:57 (ten years ago)

Reminds me I used to drink a pint of water for every pint of beer, and it did help the hangover. But that is one weird trick I seem to have forgotten.

carot tard (rip van wanko), Thursday, 13 November 2014 21:00 (ten years ago)

glass #4 about to be poured.
cant be arsed re albums anymore, time to hit a 'virtual dj' playlist ..
current selection = garage rock and roll (danko jones, feelgood, godfathers, detroit cobras, lords of altamont .. )
no doubt will change by the next glass ..
vibe : desire for noise + enjoyable physical numbness ..

mark e, Thursday, 13 November 2014 21:08 (ten years ago)

glass #5 : nothing special to report, just an amazing mix of 80s pop (abc/simple minds/duran/dolby/sputnik/adam and the ants/shriekback etc) on the playlist now.

beginning to get double/blurred vision, but hey, i can still groove so i care not.

note #1 : 4 glasses = 1 bottle

note #2 : it wont be long before the urge for ELO/tangerine dream/rick wakeman or elvis/sinatra kicks in .. the choice has yet to be made.

mark e, Thursday, 13 November 2014 22:27 (ten years ago)

Luis Bunuel drank a bottle of wine a day and had a fair innings, if only I could keep it to his level but tbf I am not that far off most nights. I have a fitness regime to counteract my bad habits. I do an hour on the bike every 6am, swimming at least twice a week, lots of walks and an additional hour on the bike before I start supping again.

I was leaving the swimming baths with my kid in the last half term and I bumped into this guy on the steps outside with whom I was at college with on a textile design course way back. He was drinking a can of Frosty Jack with a friend and looking really deathly, very bloated and jaundiced, yellowy skin + looking kind of plump and gaunt at the same time. I couldn't get a word of sense out of him and he was insisting that Cameron went to Thornhill High school in Dewsbury and I was correcting him that he is thinking of Baroness Warsi.

It made me think of my mum's foreboding (Irish wisdom) wet brain theory - "Once you cross the threshold, there is no cure for a wet brain". She was probably talking shite but it is still a troubling thought for an enthusiastic drinker.

Im with IO, it depends on wether im in company or not and the smokes add to the vibe. If Im stuck in boring company and cant smoke and its wine with dinner, I'll have half a glass and feel like I'm not even enjoying it.

Like DL said, eat after a few pints and the whole thing grinds to a halt (very strange). Ive been so known to fall asleep the moment I eat on a bender, that my bf now fights letting me have any food if he's with me, cos he doesnt want me to pass out, hahaha. Oh dear.
