if we consider an opinion as existing mentally prior to its expression then i'm not sure how it's possible to stop people having them

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. Not everyone is entitled to share that opinion in every circumstance that they may desire to.

an american friend of mine got a job in the UK for a couple of years, and he told me that he was struck by the use of the concept of entitlement there. e.g. people involved in job-related things would cite their entitlement to this or that, like a particular course assignment, or a desk; and he found that very different to how things are done in the USA, or at least to how they're framed. my takeaway was that I was no longer sure what the term "entitled" meant. then I tipped my friend 15% for telling me about this.

To the best of my knowledge, an entitlement is automatic, based on one's position in society, and universally recognized to inhere in that position, either through legal standing or a social convention with an equal force. (shrugs) But what do I know.

opinions are like assholes; human centipede has the wrong number of them in my opinion.

Philip Nunez, Friday, 28 November 2014 19:02 (ten years ago) link

Even though it's not a serious thread, I'll expand briefly on my previous post. The existence of taboos in every society ensures that there are certain subjects about which everyone may be entitled to an opinion, but that opinion has been preselected for everyone and any other opinions are considered to be all but unthinkable.

Still, we are entitled to hold that opinion.

How are things framed differently in the US?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 28 November 2014 19:20 (ten years ago) link

people don't talk about being entitled to things often? Like entitlement means "it's mine, but only if I want it" which isn't common in the USA ime

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 28 November 2014 19:24 (ten years ago) link

in the u.s. "entitlement" is mostly the word we use for social programs so that they sound more like they should be cut

It's hard to imagine contexts where asserting "Everyone's entitled to an opinion" is anything other than a lame defensive fallback indicating that you've run out of arguments.

jmm, Friday, 28 November 2014 21:56 (ten years ago) link

Wikipedia says it better:

I'm entitled to my opinion or I have a right to my opinion is a common declaration in rhetoric or debate that can be made at some point in an argument. When asserted for this reason, the statement exemplifies an informal logical fallacy of the type red herring. Whether one has a particular entitlement or right is irrelevant to whether one's assertion is true or false. To assert the existence of the right is a failure to assert any justification for the opinion. Such an assertion however, can also be an assertion of one's own freedom, or of a refusal to participate in the system of logic at hand.[1][2]

jmm, Friday, 28 November 2014 21:59 (ten years ago) link

a refusal to participate in the system of logic at hand

xp Sure. I'm torn as to whether "entitlement to an opinion" feels like a natural expression of such a refusal.

Explicitly referring to your own statement as an opinion as a way to take the edge off of something that might otherwise rankle and thereby keep the peace = qualified classic.
Explicitly referring to someone else's statements as only an opinion to avoid having to listen to it = dud.
Explicitly referring to your own statement as an opinion as a bizarre way to avoid having to listen to anybody else's arguments or reasons = major dud.

Many kinds of statements are opinions anyway, no need to stress that fact in the majority of situations, Often defining things as opinions is used as a kind of ad hominem gerrymandering. What weight to assign an opinion is the interesting thing, presumably there is the concept of an expert legal opinion for a reason. They are an expert so you should be inclined to believe their opinion, but it is still ultimately only an opinion so you should cast a weather eye upon it.

There is a great stuff is this movie about opinion-seeking. None of it is in the trailer but you should watch it anyway.

TS: My opinion, which you should listen to because I am a right-thinking person of the highest moral fibre, supported by a vast array of like-minded offstage silent parters in my opinion vs. Your opinion, based only on your narrow-minded outlook, your vain self-image, your looking out for number one and desire to lord it over others.

In short, the practical takeaway of "Everyone's entitled to an opinion" is "Try not to troll on Doors/Grateful Dead/InsertNameOfPopularBandYouHateHere threads if you can help it."

there are a range of acceptible opinions, and some of these even run to the morally egregious (from my standpoint). however, there are some opinions that are considered beyond the pale, and even in america certain kind of speech -- racist hate speech for instance, or speech inciting violence -- is curtailed. as a society we collectively decide where this right ends.
