beautiful and strange. the last few minutes looked like what i've imagined listening to "after the gold rush".

did this get a theatrical release in the US? i didn't come here, and it seems like it's coming out on blu-ray soon-ish.

Saw it at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin. It was really beautiful and interesting. My comment on the way out was "at least no one died of tuberculosis in this one."

Yeah, this hit art houses. I enjoyed the differing caricature and animation styles

huh, it never came here. which is odd, because in addition to a landmark-style "art house" (which is actually a little less adventurous, if that's the word, than landmark) we have a "smart house"--a multiplex that often reserves one screen for somewhat limited releases. i'll have to catch up with this one on video.
from the films of his i've seen, takahata seems to try something new, stylistically, with each film. the styles of those films is pretty eclectic. not that miyazaki isn't eclectic (in fact, his influences are supremely eclectic) but that tends to express itself in the headiness of the style of all of his films, rather than in major shifts between them. if that makes sense.

sorry for bad grammar
astonishing
MoMA screening was ruined by subtitles lagging 20 seconds behind

A gorgeous film. The last 20 minutes or so are some eerie and beautiful and heartbreaking all at once.

This was marvelous. The ending was sad and sublime beyond what I was expecting.

this is very far up there as one of the greatest last directed films of a career. love it and listen to the soundtrack often.
