Unfortunately, looking for fodder for this thread has given me an urge to read this.

A thing I learned while in my uh previous job is that the people who read books like these on Kindle read a ton of them. Like, a book a day. The people who read books like these are also incredibly price conscious—like, one person considered $10 a splurge and generally expected to pay $1 to $4 for their romance fix of the day. Amazon's bitter negotiations with publishers are just cover; all the action is in self-published romance.
