I never knew my penis could do all of those things.

It's amazing how many of those games like Kerplunk and Perfection could be renamed 'Don't Fuck Up'.

How many of these toys board games did you have that caused massive family arguments?

Oh, god. Don't even get me started. Kind of a stupid concept, really, but I was obsessed with Presto Magix as a kid.

The "Sixfinger" toy looks like something from either Videodrome or Existenz

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Thursday, 15 January 2015 20:03 (ten years ago)

remember when it was appropriate to give a child a woodburning kit?

shmup....smug....shmub....shmug.... (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 15 January 2015 20:19 (ten years ago)

My grandma gave me one of those. I had no idea wtf to do with it. Still not sure I understand the point.

What We Talk About When We Talk About Talking About Talking (Old Lunch), Thursday, 15 January 2015 20:20 (ten years ago)

I've played with a good 75% of these (not the penis one though).

Did most of this stuff suddenly stop being produced in the '80s? What happened at that point in time, aside from video games?

Josefa, Thursday, 15 January 2015 21:56 (ten years ago)

2-Cushion Rebound was absolutely the best, I used to play that by myself for hours and still would.

I missed or didn't see SSP Racers. They were great. No lies in this tv commercial, this was sonic youth.

Mousetrap was awesome

lots that I had completely forgotten about, like Probe

Yes it was! here's an ad for both games (and I won't keep posting ads but couldn't resist one more).

By the way, Ideal does still make Rebound but avoid, it's flimsy, comes in two pieces you snap together, dismal.

Stuff like this reminds me of fake cigarettes and stink-bombs, I had some traumatic experiences with both!

xelab, Thursday, 15 January 2015 22:36 (ten years ago)

Had about 37 of these things, including that damn Easy Show projector which broke about a day or two after Xmas '74

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Thursday, 15 January 2015 22:46 (ten years ago)

OMG those Clackers things. Everyone in my school had those in the late 70s, and then parents/school kinda banned them because everyone was ending up with bruised/broken wrists.

It is finally happening. ilxors are becoming as nostalgia-ridden as boomers. will the next thread in New Answers be a festival of yearnings for the lost candies of youth? stay tuned and find out.

Aimless, Friday, 16 January 2015 00:27 (ten years ago)

51 of these. Wow. The one I feel most thwarted by the mere sight of is the Vincent price shrunken head kit. Why couldn't I have it?!?

otm! SSPs were life-changing. i vividly remember the way they'd seem to squirm in your hand once you'd pulled the whip, gyroscopic precession from the weight of the spinning, screaming central wheel. so fucking cool. the "smash*up derby" box pictured about 4/5 of the way down is from an SSP set. i didn't have that, tho i did have one of the fly-apart smash*up derby cars.

jesus, at one time or another, my brother and/or i owned some version of 74 of these! none now survive. nostalgia kicking hard, the car-filling smell of super elastic bubble plastic on a summer afternoon in maine...

Man, Presto Magix and Colorforms. Somewhere I have a polaroid of myself, in single child splendor, situated on a couch Christmas morning surrounded by a city of toys, most prominent of which was this wondrous thing:

I think I want to wallpaper a room with that background.

Devilock, Friday, 16 January 2015 05:07 (ten years ago)

Weird phenomenon of scrolling through that list and stopping to squint in half-remembrance every few moments. Seems Don't Break the Ice means something to me but I can't recall why.

Also I was an only child, not a "single" child.

Devilock, Friday, 16 January 2015 05:33 (ten years ago)

I only first heard about Don't Break the Ice recently, and I really like the look of it.

Does it work well as a group game?

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Friday, 16 January 2015 09:46 (ten years ago)

Also, why didn't they show pics for the Buddy L and Tonka toys? From that list the toys that I spent the most time with, huge diggers and stuff.

I remember a kid near where I lived had fallen out with me and he stole and buried all my tonka/buddy l toys in a nearby field. Luckily they're all so huge his attempt wasn't so successful and I could see them sticking out a mile away.

aw geez this box cover. mom and sis stuck doing dishes, watching enviously as pop and son get to do fun things like play games instead of doing stupid chores

Marx Toys.

Unfortunately, inside is only an instruction book about how to set up or take over a factory to make them.

Mark G, Friday, 16 January 2015 16:11 (ten years ago)

I had a Tot Rod!

http://img0107.popscreencdn.com/158411429_vintage-1960s-murray-chain-drive-super-tot-rod-pedal-car.jpg

These sort of were dangerous - they had no brakes, and the pedals couldn't freewheel so they always turned by themselves really fast when going downhill, so the rider usually took their feet out of the well to let them spin.

― Drop soap, not bombs (Ste)

In an attempt to jog my memory I watched a YT vid of this game, and a) I still don't know why it seems to hold some kind of significance for me, and b) it looks ... pretty dull, even by the standards of Things Enjoyable Only When Imbued With Nostalgia. I think this is one of those cases where the simplicity works against it.

Devilock, Friday, 16 January 2015 18:57 (ten years ago)

I just did too and I dont get it. Whats supposed to happen? Last person who hits a tile in that makes the man fall down is the loser? It reminds me of Mousetrap: that game was so fucking useless.

friend of mine had a green machine *and* a regular big wheel (not to mention *all* the star wars figures)

later turned out his dad was a mafioso

mookieproof, Saturday, 17 January 2015 05:35 (ten years ago)

my dad put a motorcycle license plate and static-dissipating straps on my big wheel, tho, so whatevs

mookieproof, Saturday, 17 January 2015 05:36 (ten years ago)

i wanted the green machine so bad

yeah, me too. ads made it look so damn cool (and lol at the "for guys...who really know how to ride" tagline). thing is, the non-mafia family who lived across the street from me had one, and it was nowhere near as good for skids & wrecks as a regular big wheel.

no Mmmmbob (contenderizer), Saturday, 17 January 2015 10:07 (ten years ago)

My next-door neighbor had a Green Machine, and every kid on the block was super jealous (at least in part because our Big Wheels had holes in the "tires" from always skidding/spinning out). Then a couple of us rode the Green Machine and were like, eh. It was slow and boring.
