Okay, Now You’re Talkin’ Above My Head: the John C. Reilly Poll

I watched Terri last night, looked for a John C. Reilly thread--nothing general, no poll. He’s made a ton of a films--exactly 50 after eliminating TV and a couple of cameos (something named Entertainment supposedly played Sundance last week). Vote for performance; I don’t want the trauma of seeing The Thin Red Line finish ahead of Boogie Nights and Casualties of War. (I assume that Casualties will get no votes anyway. He’s fantastic in it.) Maybe one of his starring comedies will win, I don't know.

Yeah, this might be one of the hardest polls yet, as I love him in pretty much every movie I've seen him in. Although you've made it a little easier by excluding most of his appearances as Dr. Steve Brule.

Indiana Jones and the Sphincter of the Sphinx (Old Lunch), Sunday, 1 February 2015 15:18 (ten years ago)

Letterboxd tells me I've seen 19 of his films, a significant number of which I don't recall him in (Georgia, State of Grace, Gilbert Grape). He's kind of the same always, which in his case is fine. Hilarious in, eg, Cedar Rapids, an otherwise unremarkable slob comedy.

i might actually have to vote for walk hard in this, there's just something about the way he phrases "how about i buy you a crow that can talk"

something named Entertainment supposedly played Sundance last week

this is the new one from Rick Alverson, who did The Comedy. pretty much the American movie I'm most excited about this year

Simon H., Sunday, 1 February 2015 21:33 (ten years ago)

anyway this is tough. he lights up the otherwise awful Chicago for sure.

Was stuck between talledega and magnolia before I remembered Terri. Criminally ignored film.

da croupier, Sunday, 1 February 2015 21:40 (ten years ago)

It must have been--not even sure if it got an opening here. Thought it was very nice.

He's always unmistakably himself, but also quite versatile: the broad comedy (sorry to say I haven't yet watched Dewey Cox or Ricky Bobby--have both on the shelf), song-and-dance guy (I barely remember Chicago), slovenly middle-aged slob (kind of a Bill Murray role in Terri), and also really sweet, gentle characters in Magnolia, Cyrus, and The Good Girl--he's got that Philip Seymor Hoffman side to him. He's got to be one of the best supporting actors of the past 25 years.

As much as I love Reed Rothchild, and am filled with joy just thinking about how proud he is when he says "His partner's name is Chest Rockwell," I voted for Magnolia. The flashy performances got all the attention, but I think that's his film.

Hard Eight by a country mile.

i'm always happy to see john c. reilly - he's got such an amazing face. there's a lot of great performances in this list but voting for walk hard. it's not often he plays a lead role and he's fantastic in it.

he would be such a perfect ben grimm / the thing in a fantastic four movie.

^^^

feel like this dude is underrated, he is kind of "always the same" I guess but he employs that across a pretty broad range of material and I'm always glad to see him on-screen

Οὖτις, Monday, 2 February 2015 17:28 (ten years ago)

most recent thing I saw him in was Carnage, he was reliably funny/ridiculous. Has anyone else seen Cyrus? Not actually a good film, but this initial scene with Jonah Hill always cracks me up:

nope gr80, it appears the only TV/film versions of True West are the '84 PBS one with Malkovich & Sinise, and another one in 2002 w/ Bruce Willis.

A certain quotient of dumb jokes in Walk Hard do not take anything away from Reilly as parody music performer. Who else has taken on classic Dylan gibberish the way he does? Love the way "Ed Sullivan" stands there respectfully. I also like when his band invents, and then rejects, punk rock.

voted magnolia just because in such a huge cast, he starts the film my least favorite character and finishes it my most favorite

He's fantastic in Magnolia.

He's okay in a thankless role in a shitty film

Οὖτις, Monday, 9 February 2015 02:51 (ten years ago)

Evidently many people disagree (with at least the first two parts of that sentence).

clemenza, Monday, 9 February 2015 02:53 (ten years ago)

"thankless role in shitty PTA film overshadows his actual payout" is probably an accurate reflection for John C Reilly, sadly.

eleven months pass...

This may have turned up your Facebook feed, and maybe somebody's posted it here too (couldn't find a thread for impersonators). I think the Reilly is brilliant here, also Matthew McConaughey and the five-second rule.

four months pass...

am I the only one that saw the Sisters Brothers? weird little movie, neither as broadly comic nor intensely dramatic, sort of somewhere in the middle, with a very meandering shaggy-dog sort of plot. I didn't even notice Rutger Hauer (granted he doesn't actually do anything). Gyllenhaal's affected upper class accent is consistently ridiculous.
